O Maharishi Parashara, I have learnt from you about the grahas, rashis, and their descriptions. I desire to know the details of various divisions of a rashi. Will you please narrate them? 2- 4. Names of the 16 Vargas: Lord Brahma has descri bed 16 kinds of Vargas (Divisi ons) for each rashi. Listen to those. The names are: Rashi, Hora, Dreshkan, Chaturthamsha, Saptamsha, Navamsha, Dashamsha, Dvadashamsha, Shodashamsha, Vimshamsha, Chaturvimshamsha, Saptavimshamsha, Trimshamsha, Khavedamsha, Akshavedamsha, and Shashtiamsha. 5- 6. Rashi and Hora: The rashi owned by a graha is called its Kshe tra. The first half of an odd rashi is the Hora ruled by Surya. While the second half is the Hora of Chandra. The reverse is true in the case of an even rashi. The lord of the Hora of Chandra are the ancest ors and the lord of the Hora of the Sun are the divine gods; and their fame is widesp read. Half of a rashi is called Hora. The se are a total of 24 counted from Mesha and repeated twice (at the rate of 12) in the whole of the zodiac. 7-8. Dreshkan: One third of a rashi is called Dreshkan (Dreshkan). These are 36 in total, counted from Mesha (to Meena), repeating thrice at the rate of 12 per round. The 1st, 5th, and the 9th rashis from a rashi are its three Dreshkanas, and are respectively lorded by Narada, Agasthya and Durvasha. 9. Chaturt hamsha : The lords of the 4 Kendr as from a rashi are the rulers of respective Chaturthamsha of a rashi commencing from Mesha. Each Chaturthamsha is one fourth of a rashi. The deities respectively are Sanaka, Sananda, Kumar and Sanatana. 10-11. Saptamsha: The Saptamsha (one seventh of a rashi) counti ng commences from the same rashi in the case of an odd rashi. It is from the seventh rashi thereof while an even rashi is consi dered. The names of the seven division s in odd rashis are: Kshaa r, Ksheer, Dadhi, Ghrith, Ikshu, Raas, Madhya, and Shuddh Jal. These designations are revers ed for an even rashi. 12. Navamsha: The calculati on of Navamsha are for a movable rashi from the beginning, for a fixed rashi from the 9th thereo f and for a dual rashi from the 5th there of. They go by designations Deva (divine), Manushya (human), and Rakshasa (devilish) in a successive and repetitive order for a movable rashi. (Manushya, Rakshasa and Deva are the order for a fixed rashi while Raksh asa, Manush ya, and Deva are a dual rashi' s order.  13- 14.
