Charleston, SC surrenders to the British 1780

• British Mistakes:

1. General Cornwallis forces colonists to give allegiance to England. They must choose sides .

2. Colonel Tarleton refuses to “give quarter” to Buford’s VA Infantry. Wounded bayoneted, and those who surrendered are stabbed with sabers. – Atrocities make Patriots more determined, and sway

some on the fence to side w/ Patriots. – Retaliation continues on both sides.

Losing hope in December of 1778

• British also get control of Camden, SC, and Savannah, GA. 1780

Nathaniel Greene replaces Gates in command of the Southern forces

• He had been quartermaster at Valley Forge. He won a major battle at Guilford Courthouse in NC, which removed the British from NC.
