The Mauryan Empire Unifies India

• In the 320s BC, a military leader named

• Candregupta Maurya seized control of the entire northern part of India. By doing so, he founded the Mauryan Empire which lasted for 150 years.

After the Mauryan Empire ended, in 185 BC, India remained divided into small kingdoms for 500 years.

Buddhism continued to expand and Hinduism decline.

• Under the Gupta Empire, India became united again. The Guptas were Hindus and strongly believed in the caste system and that it should be an important part of Indian society.

• Women had little rights in India.

• The Gupta empire was invaded by the Huns from the north. The empire was weakened and lasted until the 500s AD.

• Afterwards, India was divided into small kingdoms again.
