• Uploading a layout to an iPad is done in InDesign using Digital Publishing Suite Desktop Tools.

• The Digital Publishing Suite (DPS) is a comprehensive software package that allows everyone from publishers to individual designers to publish their content on tablet devices like the iPad.

• DPS Desktop Tools CS6 functions in InDesign as the Folio Builder and Folio Overlays panels.

• You use the Folio Builder panel to upload layouts to the iPad, and you use the Folio Overlays panel to specify functions for placed audio and video files.

• The Adobe Content Viewer software allows you to preview the layouts you plan to upload to an iPad on your computer first.

• An InDesign document for iPad can contain hyperlinks, sound files, and video files.

• You can create buttons to trigger sound and video files in an iPad presentation.

• Remember, the iPad does not support Flash animation.

• When you design a multiple page publication in InDesign for the iPad, they include all the pages in one document.

• This document is called a folio.

• You can’t upload a multiple page document to the iPad.

• Instead, each page must be saved as a standalone file.

• Each of these standalone files is an article.

• When you are designing an InDesign publication for the iPad, you can place sound and video files as you normally would, with one important exception: in order for a sound or video file to play, it must be on the document page.

• When you download DPS Desktop Tools CS6, the Folio Overlays panel is downloaded and installed.

• You can use the Folio Overlays panel to specify when sound and video files play in a publication on the iPad.

• The panel shows different categories of interactivity that can be utilized in a presentation, everything from simple hyperlinks to panoramas and image sequences.

• Any design work you do with buttons to play sound or video in an iPad presentation has to be done with the consideration that the button will remain on the page after it’s been triggered.

• Rather than use InDesign buttons, many designers prefer to use the controls available in the Folio Overlays panel.

• These controls are more standard for iPad and tablet device presentations than button triggers.

• While auto-playing sound and video files are fairly common in iPad presentations, you will find many times that you don’t want them to play automatically.

• If you leave the Auto Play check box unchecked, sound and video files will play only when tapped.

• How will a reader know sound and/or video files are available to be played?

• You could add artwork, a “play” button, or text that indicates that it needs to be tapped to be played for video or audio.

• The Folio Builder panel is connected to the Internet.

• When you click the Sign In option on the Folio Builder panel, the panel connects to your Adobe account using their Adobe ID and password.

• You can think of your Adobe account as storage space that they have online with Adobe.

• When you create a folio in the Folio Builder panel, that content is automatically uploaded to your Adobe account.

• The Adobe Content Viewer app on your iPad displays the folio that you upload to Adobe account; thus, using the Adobe Content Viewer app, you can display your layouts on your iPad.

• The term folio refers to a sheet of paper folded once to make two leaves – or four pages – of a book.

• In the Folio Builder panel, the folio is the complete publication – and it contains all the articles in the publication.

• Tablet presentations—like those on an iPad—have three basic orientations: Portrait Only Folio, Landscape Only Folio, and Portrait and Landscape Folio.

• It is important that the orientation you choose in the New Folio dialog box is the same as the orientation of the articles that will be added to the folio.

• You can add articles, open articles, rename articles, and assign formatting.

• The formats listed in the menu are JPEG, PNG and PDF. These are all image formats. This is because InDesign documents are converted to images when they’re added to a folio as articles.

• The Smooth Scrolling option controls how you can swipe from page to page (article to article) on your tablet device.

• If Smooth Scrolling is activated, they can have half of one page and half of the subsequent page both visible on the tablet screen.

• The folios you create in InDesign do not need to be saved. They exist in your online Adobe account and will appear and be accessible in your Folio Builder panel whenever you open InDesign and are connected to the Internet.
