IntroductionThe fundamental laws of continuum mechanics are given by four

conservation/balance laws plus a restriction law.

The four conservation/balance laws are: Conservation of mass · Mass continuity equation Linear momentum balance · Cauchy first motion equation Angular momentum balance · Symmetry of Cauchy stress First law of thermodynamics · Energy balance equation

The restriction law is given by: Second law of thermodynamics · Clausius-Planck and heat

Conservation of MassWe assume that during a motion there are neither mass sources

(reservoirs that supply mass), nor mass sinks (reservoirs thatabsorb mass), so the mass of a continuum body is a conserved
