Chapter 33.2: Blood and Heart Disease

Blood- Contains plasma

- 90% water- 10% dissolved gases, salts,

nutrients, enzymes, hormones and waste

- Contains red blood cells- Also called erythrocytes- Carry oxygen with the protein

hemoglobin

Blood

- Contains white blood cells- Also called leukocytes- Fight off infections, toxins, and

parasites

- Contains platelets- Are cell fragments- Use plasma proteins to enable

blood clotting

Circulatory System Diseases

- High Blood Pressure- Also called hypertension- About 140/90

- Heart Disease- Atherosclerosis

- Fat creates deposits called plaques in arteries

- Can cause a heart attack- Blocked arteries disrupt blood flow

to the heart

Circulatory System Diseases- Stroke

- Occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is disrupted, and brain cells die

Decreasing the Risk of Circulatory Disease- Cholesterol

- Is a lipid and is in many fatty foods

- Can collect into plaques on the sides of arteries

- Reducing the amount of cholesterol in your diet reduces circulatory disease

Decreasing the Risk of Circulatory Disease- Exercise

- Uses up calories and reduces obesity

- Every pound of fat has 3 to 7 miles of blood vessels, which strain the heart
