DEFORESTATION

Deforestation–The action/process of clearing of
forests–The state of having been cleared of
forests–Is the direct of indirect human-
induced conversion of forested land to non-forested land

The Principal Causes of Deforestation
Direct Causes• Agricultural Expansion•Wood Extraction• Logging• Infrastructure
Development
![Page 5: CHAPTER 3 Deforestation](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042705/5695d2671a28ab9b029a4a64/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Indirect Causes• Economic Factors• Technological Factors• Deep-rooted Social
Structure• Political factors• Industrialization
![Page 6: CHAPTER 3 Deforestation](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042705/5695d2671a28ab9b029a4a64/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Effects:
Deforestation has many environmentally damaging side effects
• Atmosphere• Hydrological• Soil• Biodiversity
![Page 7: CHAPTER 3 Deforestation](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042705/5695d2671a28ab9b029a4a64/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Atmosphere• Deforestation is responsible for 20%
of greenhouse gas emissions• Carbon dioxide linger in the
atmosphere that traps radiation from the sun, the radiation converts heat which causes global warming / greenhouse effect.
![Page 8: CHAPTER 3 Deforestation](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042705/5695d2671a28ab9b029a4a64/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Hydrological• Produces drier climate• Reduces atmospheric pressure• Creating lesser cohesion of soil
that ensures landslides, flooding and soil erosion
![Page 9: CHAPTER 3 Deforestation](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042705/5695d2671a28ab9b029a4a64/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Soil• Increases soil erosion through development of roads & use of mechanized equipment
Biodiversity•Provide extinction of many species• 80% of the world known biodiversity is found in tropical rainforests

Animals affected in deforestation
Wildlife affected include monkeys, wild boar, python, ducks, the Philippine ostrich.

PHILIPPINE COVER
24.0% —or about 7,162,000 hectares—of Philippines is forested. Of this, 11.6% —or roughly 829,000 hectares—is classified as primary forest, the most biodiversity form of forest.

Laws of Deforestation in the Philippines
• Act No. 2711 of 1917 restricts the entry to forests only for “forest use.” Denudation obviously is not for forest use.
•Republic Act No. 3092 of 1961, amending Act No. 2711, requires congressional legislation for every reclassification of forests into mineral reserves.

•Republic Act No. 3571 An act to prohibit the cutting, destroying or
injuring of planted or growing tress, flowering plants and shrubs or plants of scenic value along public roads, in plazas, parks, school premises or in any other public ground• Republic Act No. 8048 Coconut Preservation Act of 1995 An providing for the regulation of the cutting of coconut trees, its replenishment, providing penalties therefore and other purposes.
