    What is a mammal?

Mammals are endodermic vertebrates withhair. Female mammals have specializedglands called mammary glands, from which

    mammals get their name.

    What are the adaptations of

    mammals?

Many mammalian adaptations are associatedwith maintaining body temperature.

Hair and body size affect heat loss.

    Mammals adapt according to their

life style either run, swim, or fly.

The basic structure of themammalian skeleton enables high-speed running.

Mammals have the largest and mostwell developed brains in the animalkingdom.

    Monotremes

    Characteristics

Monotremes are mammals that reproduce bylaying eggs.

Monotremes retain some of the characteristicsof their reptinian ancestors, such as layingeggs.

Monotremes cannot control their bodytemperature, and usually have a lower bodytemperature.

Marsuopials aremammals that givebirth to a small,

immature young thatfurther develop insidethe mothers external

    pouch.

Most of the nearly250 species ofmarsupials live inAustralia or on nearby

    Placental mammals

95% of all mammals areplacental mammals.

They are a very dispersegroup that make theirhomes in water, on land,

and in the air. They have specialized

adaptations for movementand obtaining food that fitthat fit the environment inwhich they live such aswater, land, or air.

They are divides intogroups according totheir characteristics:

    Rodents

    Lagomorphs

    Bats

    Carnivores

    Cetaceans

    Sirenians

    Mammalian behavior

Mammals exhibit many different kinds ofbehavior, such as finding food, playing, and using tools.

For example bats are night-time hunters

that use echolocations to find food andavoid objects in the dark. Whales anddolphins also locate their preys byecholocation.

Mammals also have the ability to usetools. Chimpanzees for example, strip theleaves off twigs, and insert them intotermite mounds. Then they pull out thetermite-covered sticks and eat the insects.

Playing enables animals to learn skills used inhunting and fighting. Play may also helpmammals gain physical strength and endurance.

Dog, bears, elephants, wolves, gorillas, chimpanzees, lions, leopards, and dolphins areexamples of this behavior.

    Many mammals play! :D
