SECONDARY IDEAS:Weather is caused by warmer air interacting with

cooler air.Convection currents are caused by less dense air

rising and more dense air sinking to fill in the “hole”.

Warmer air is LESS DENSE than cooler air. Less dense matter “floats” on top of more dense matter.

DENSITYLESS DENSE RISES!

HurricanesA Hurricane is a large rotating storm of tropical origin that has sustained winds of at least 119km/hour (74 mph)

Page 11: CHAPTER 20 WEATHER. Monday December 10, 2012 TODAY’S KEY IDEA: Energy enters the Earth system primarily as solar radiation and eventually escapes as heat.

Hurricane Facts•Most Violent Storms on Earth!!!•Gets its energy from the heat of the oceans surface.•Hurricanes that occur in the Pacific Ocean are called Typhoons.•Hurricanes occur Form between 5 degrees and 20 degrees latitude.

Page 31: CHAPTER 20 WEATHER. Monday December 10, 2012 TODAY’S KEY IDEA: Energy enters the Earth system primarily as solar radiation and eventually escapes as heat.

Hurricane Formation

In order for a hurricane to form, there must be a supply of warm, moist air for a long period of time.

Page 32: CHAPTER 20 WEATHER. Monday December 10, 2012 TODAY’S KEY IDEA: Energy enters the Earth system primarily as solar radiation and eventually escapes as heat.

• Formation begins in the tropic regions (5 to 20 degrees latitude).

• Energy comes from condensing water vapor due to unstable humid air rising.

When water vapor condenses to liquid water it releases 540 kcal per mole.

When liquid water freezes to ice, it only lets off 80 kcal per mole.

Page 33: CHAPTER 20 WEATHER. Monday December 10, 2012 TODAY’S KEY IDEA: Energy enters the Earth system primarily as solar radiation and eventually escapes as heat.

•For a hurricane to form it must begin to rotate (Coriolis Force).

-Hurricanes rotate counterclockwise in Northern Hemisphere.

-Hurricanes rotate clockwise in Southern Hemisphere.
