Introduction

• Every sentence has two parts:

• Subject Part

• Predicate Part

Subject

• That part of a sentence which denotes the person or thing about which something is said, is called the Subject of the sentence. The italicized words in the following sentences express the subject:-• Hari sings a song.• This story is very interesting.• Our brave soldiers defeated the enemy.• Honesty is the best policy.• Walking is a good exercise.• To err is human.

Predicate

• That part of a sentence which tells about the person or thing denoted by the subject, is called the Predicate. (In simple words, it can be said that part of sentence leaving out the Subject is called the Predicate).The italicized words in the following sentences express the predicate:-• The boys are playing a match.• A wolf killed the lamb.• He felt pity for the beggar.• There are seven days in a week.• How he passed is a matter of surprise.

Imperative Sentence

• In Imperative sentences the Subject is generally not used.

1. Thank you. (I) thank you.

2. Come here. (You should) come here.

3. Mind your step. (You must) mind your step.

Exclamatory Sentence

• In Exclamatory sentences, the subject is generally placed at the end.

• How cruel he is!

• What a foolish Mohan was!

• In some Exclamatory sentences the Subject and also part of Predicate are understood.• What a beautiful sight! What a beautiful sight (it is)!• Well done! (That was) well done

Interrogative Sentence

• In Interrogative sentences the Subject is used at an appropriate place in the Predicate part of the sentence.• Did he help your mother?• What is Mohan doing here?

Exercise-3

• Divide the following sentences into Subject and Predicate:-• Do your work carefully.• He has already written to his father.• Where he lives is not known.• Show me the way to the bus-stand.• How foolish I have been!• Don’t make such mistake again.• Has he finished his work?• What a novel idea!• There are seven days in a week.• No more of that.(=There should no more of that).

• Add suitable Subjects to the following Predicates:-
