1. Mini-Quiz (5 min)Monroe's Motivated Sequence

• Take out a piece of paper

• Write the 5 steps to Monroe's Motivated Sequence with room to write• Instructions: I am going to play this information two times, label the parts of Monroe's• Go over answers with class

• I am not collecting this, but if you did not do well, I suggest that you review this.

o This is the basic outline for your persuasive speech and it will be on you final exam.

II. Lecture on Chapter 16Persuasive appeals

• You must use these during your persuasive speech. Draw the followin2 on the board!!!

Chapter 16 Lesson Plan: Monday. November 14. 2011Credibility- you must establish your credibility as a speaker. For you to be considered credible, youraudience must perceive you as knowledgeable on the topic and believable.

• Competence: Demonstrated ability or qualityo You can create this by exhibiting special knowledge on a topic.

• You have a certificate in science education

o You can create this by discussing your personal experience• Many of you did that in your speeches when you discussed your personal experience

with ADHDand liver transplants. This adds a special touch of credibility to your speech

• Dynamism: Degree of excitement, energy, involvement in topico The best way to show this to your audience is to choose a topic that you care about.o Oftentimes these characteristics'are showed through nonverbal communication

• Trustworthiness/ethics: Character or integrity perceived by the audienceo Your audience has to perceive that you are honest

• Oftentimes, political candidates will be harshly criticized for "flip-flopping" which meansthat they do not stand firm on positions. They are not considered trustworthy.

o Integrity is when your words match your acti~ns• It's like when you start talking with someone and they say "Oh, yeah, I think what Wal

Mart is doing to its female workers is terrible!" But after a few weeks you begin tonotice they shop there with no problems.

Transition: Establishing your credibility is a very hard thing to do with an audience that you've never met. The

chapter provides several strategies for doing this. I will start first by discussing how to create common groundwith your audience

Common Ground- Tell the audience that you are like the in some wayo A great way to do this effectively is to think about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. All of us have

those general things in common.

• College textbooks are so expensive. Each semester we all have to dig deep into our

pockets so that we can continue to work toward improving our lives.

o You have to create common ground with your audience

Transition: Another way to improve your credibility is to have strong, logical arguments•..

Logical Arguments- Speaker provides good reason for why their proposal should be implemented.

• You have to use at least one of these in your speech!

Fallacies- Arguments that are faulty in some way. They are not good reasons to believe something.• Ad hominem

• Faulty td\l~-~-(~fc}• Nonsequitur

• Overgeneralization

• Faulty analogy

Iwill go over these on Wednesday

Emotional Appeals- These are used to trigger emotions or feelings of an audience, such as anger fear, pride, patriotism, sadness.

Chapter 16 Lesson Plan: Monday. November 14. 2011• Do you remember the Feed the Children commercials? The starving children are used as emotional

appeals.

• Emotional appeals can be more complicated than that though. Sometimes speakers will switch

arguments around. For example, you may say that you do not want to donate to the DARE programbecause statistically it does not show results. But the person looking for the donations will say, "Oh, so

you want you kids to be on drugs huh?" This is a faulty argument and an emotional appeal.

III. Watch Thank you for SmokingIV. Pass Back Speeches

• Put statistics on board

• Pass back speeches• Overall, very good. As many of you can tell, it really hurts when you go over or under in time. Watch

out for this.

• Also, make sure that you have a clear thesis and main points.

• I am looking forward to your next speeches.• If you wish to talk with me about anything, please sign-up for an 10 minutes appointment.
