• President Roosevelt thought the government should take action and to end the depression.

• The New Deal– Federal government programs that Roosevelt thought would

help the economy.– Congress quickly passed laws to put the New Deal into action.

• Eleanor Roosevelt helped to get women involved in the New Deal programs.

• Should spoke out for the rights of workers, African Americans, and children.

• New Deal Programs– Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)

• Goal: to create jobs and conserve, or protect, the natural environment. • CCC workers planted trees, cleared hiking trails, and completed other conservation projects.

• The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)– People built dams on the Tennessee River.– The dams created hydroelectricity

• Hydroelectricity is electricity produced by moving water. The dams also prevented floods.

• New Deal Programs still in effect today– Social Security

• Social security provides money to people over the age of 65. It also helps those who have disabilities and cannot work.

– Minimum Wage• A regulation is a rule or law. • Minimum wage is the lowest amount of money most workers can be paid.
