GATE VALVEOf all the many different types of valves available to industry thegate valve is by far the most widely used. In this valve a gate-like disk is moved at right angles across the line of ow betweenmatching seats in the valve body, thus opening or shutting off the ow. It is intended for duty as a stop valve and in the fullyopen position provides straight through full bore ow with conse-quent minimum loss of pressure of the service uid.
Conventional types of gate valves are generally ideal forservices that require infrequent operation and where the disk iskept fully open or fully closed. They are not intended for mod-ulating or throttling purposes. Velocity of ow against a partlyopened disk may cause vibration and chattering with possibledamage to the seating surfaces and throttling can subject thedisk to the erosive effects of wire drawing.
The principal variation in the design of gate valves is in the typeof sealing element employed and reasonably the valves are of-ten described in terms of the sealing element, e.g., solid wedge,parallel slide, parallel double disk, and split wedge. There aremany others types, some of which are included in the examplesshown on pages 2, 3 and 4, but the designs in most common usare the wedge gate valve and parallel slide valve.
Wedge Gate Valve The uid controlling element in this design of gate valve (Fig.1) is a rigid one-piece, wedge shaped, disk containing noloose parts. The disk is accurately guided in the valve body toensure that contact between the disk seat faces and body seatfaces is limited to only a small portion of the closing and open-ing movements. Because of the wedge action, tight sealingcan be achieved without assistance from the uid pressure.
Parallel Slide Gate Valve The design feature of this valve (Fig. 2) is a parallel and exiblesealing element containing two half-disks which slide betweentwo corresponding parallel seat faces in the body. A spring isusually contained between the two halves of the disk. Thisspring has three functions: to provide a exible closure mem-ber, to hold the disk halves in sliding contact with the bodyseats under zero or near zero pressure so that a wiping action
is obtained, and to dampen down any tendency to vibrate of the disk parts.
Closure sealing is achieved by the thrust of the line pres-sure forcing the disk against the seating face on the downstreamside of the body and the resultant contact pressure secures uidtightness. The closure member of a parallel slide valve has ahigh degree of exibility, which is particularly useful on servicessubject to appreciable variations of temperature. Expansions orcontractions of working parts can be accommodated without af-
fecting the operation of the valve.
Parallel Double Disk Gate Valve This valve (Fig. 3) has two parallel disk halves which are forcedoutwards against the body seat faces by means of a spreaderor wedge when contact is made with a stop in the bottom of the valve body. The rst opening movement releases the diskhalves and continued operation raises them clear of the bodyseat openings.
Split Wedge Gate ValveSimilar to the parallel double disk valve but the disk is wedgeshaped (Fig. 4) Again a spreader device is used to force the diskhalves against matching tapered seats in the valve body and therst opening movement releases the disk halves from contactwih the body seats

Flexible Wedge Disk
The wedge type disk can also be obtained in a
exible design,developed primarily to overcome sticking on high temperatureservices subject to great temperature changes. In one form thesingle piece construction of the disk is maintained but the twoseating faces are separate form each other except for a short
connecting axle or spud at the centre of the disk (Fig. 5).
In this way each disk face is permitted a certain degree of independent movement which, besides eliminating the possibil-ity of sticking in the closed position, facilitates tightness on boththe upstream and downstream sides of the disk over a widerange of pressures and temperatures.

Soft SealingSoft sealing is a recent development in which plastic or syntheticrubber rings are inserted into the faces of the disk or body seatrings to provide soft sealing backed up by contact of the metal tometal faces. Soft seals provide improved sealing characteristicsover a very useful range of temperatures for a great variety of uids. The resilience of the seal gives good recovery from de-formation by accumulated dirt and solid particles in the serviceuid. Another asset is the reduction in effort required to operatethe valve.
For block and bleed control, sometimes known as doubleblocking, the use of soft seals can secure the requirement forpositive tight closure on both sides of the disk with the aid of onlyone valve. This may avoid the possible use of two conventionalvalves to obtain the same results.
Another development in soft sealing offering positive tight
shut-off with high resilience is the wedge gate valve in which afacing of synthetic rubber is bonded to the disk casting. Bothupstream and downstream faces and also the lower peripheryof the disk are covered with the rubber. Sealing round the uppertwo-thirds of the disk is axial by wedge action while round thelower one-third of the disk the seal is achieved by radial contactbetween the rubber covered lower part of the disk and the baseof the body.
Stem Arrangement There are three basic designs of stem arrangements:1. Inside screw, rising stem (Fig. 6).2. Outside screw and yoke non-rotating rising stem (Fig. 7).3. Outside screw, rising stem (Fig. 8).
The tirst mentioned is relatively the least expensive and ismost commonly found on the smaller sizes of valves. A usefulfeature is that the position of the stem serves to indicate theposition of the disk. Because the stem threads are inside thevalve body and so open to attack by the service uid, insidescrew valves are not usually used for high temperature serviceswhere consequent expansion and contraction may cause bind-ing of the threads.
In the case of the inside screw, non-rising stem design, thestem does not move axially but merely rotates. This arrange-ment is particularly useful where headroom is limited. Also, theelimination of the up and down movement of the stem reducesthe amount of wear on the gland packing.
On the outside screw, rising stem valve, the stem threads
are situated outside the valve body and so are not subjected topossible effects of the pipeline uid. The stem threads are ac-cessible for lubrication and the position of the stem provides anindication of the amount of valve opening. Adequate headroomis required for the rising stem, for which some form of protectionshould be arranged to guard against possible damage.

Other Gate Valve Designs
Lever or Quick ActingIn one design (Fig. 9) of quick acting gate valve a lever takes theplace of the handwheel and operates a sliding stem. In anotherdesign (Fig. 10) a lever is connected to the disk by a shaft andlink arrangement and a quarter-turn rotation of the lever opensor closes the valve.
Clamp or Clip The body and bonnet are held together by means of a singleU clamp (Fig. 11). This arrangement is ideal where frequentinspection and cleaning of lines are necessary: by removing twonuts the complete bonnet assembly is easily removed. The slim-ness of the valve reduces space requirements and cuts downon weight.
Conduit This type of valve (Fig. 12) employs a parallel faced disk that islengthened to include a circular part of the same diameter asthe valve bore. The valve is characterized by its body design,which is extended above and below the centre line to providethe necessary cavities for the virtually double length disk. A fullbore smooth and continuous ow path is obtained and the useof product separators is made convenient.
Penstock
A single faced gate or door is moved vertically or horizontallybetween guides attached to a frame (Fig. 13) that is xed towall or bulkhead. The guides may be parallel to the frame, inwhich case sealing is in one direction only and dependent on theuid pressure, or they may be tapered to provide a wedge effectbetween frame and guides, thereby obtaining gate tightness inboth directions.
It is used for handlng large volumes of water in waterworksand sewage schemes, also as a watertight door on ships.
Line-Blind, Spectacle, or GoggleA spectacle shaped plate with one end blank and an ori ce inthe other end is rotated about its centre between two anges(Fig. 14). When the ange bolts are tightened the spectacleplate is sealed between the anges in either the open or theclosed positions. In another design the spectacle or goggle plateis raised and lowered by a threaded stem and handwheel orother means. As one end of the spectacle plate is always visibleoutside the valve body this provides an indication of whether thevalve is open or closed.
Pulp Stock, Knife, or PlateA valve of rugged construction to meet the requirements of pulpstock handling. Usually has a plate disk with a knife-like cuttingedge at the bottom (Fig. 15) to assure complete shearing and
positive shutoff.

Long thread stem nut to provide long thread life and permit the removal of hand wheel even at full open.

Renewable seal welded seats with satellite 6 are standard design while screwed-in seats are optional.

This is a typical series GT Through Conduit Gate Valve illustrated cross-section drawing which is only for demonstrating of basic design features. The actual product design may beslightly different from this sample drawing due to its size and pressure class.
ISO 5210 mounting flange easily for installation of gear, motor or pneumatic actuator.
Whether proof stem yoke.
Emergency Sealant Injection Fitting prevent leakage from the stem.
Vent valve to release the body cavity.
Slab gate with Electric Nickel Plate or Stellite No. 6 welding deposit.
Emergency sealant injection fitting prevent leakage from the seat.
Drain plug to release the residue within body cavity.
Floating spring loaded seats with double O-ring ensure efficient total sealing even at low pressure.
Through conduit gate valves has 2 main series:Slab Gate and Expanding Gate, both are fullycomply with API 6D standard. For conventionaltemperature service. Slab gate valves are de-signed for temperatures service ranging from-46 C to 200 C. For high temperature service,expanding gate valve can be used up to 500 C.
Through conduit gate valve size range from2~48 class rating from 150Ib~2500Lb, all avail-able in bolted bonnet or pressure seal bonnet.
