2012 Festival Winners & Honors

W e’re excited to once again host the East Coast’s premier high school jazz event and showcase the best in jazz entertainment.

The Chantilly Invitational Jazz Festival was created 32 years ago to provide an opportunity for high school, professional jazz musicians and educators to share, learn, and compete. Over the years, bands, combos, and jazz ensembles from Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee, West Virginia and the District of Columbia have participated. Festival audiences have also heard great performances by the US Army Jazz Ambassadors, the Airmen of Note, the Jazz Consortium Big Band, Capital Bones, ensembles from nearby universities and soloists Matt Niess, Tim Eyerman, Dave Detweiler, Jacques Johnson, Karen Henderson, Chris Vadala, Bruce Gates and

many others. We’re delighted to welcome the Mark Brandt Trio, the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra, George Mason University and the National Jazz Workshop Winter Big Band as our guest ensembles. The Chantilly Invitational Jazz Festival has grown to over thirty groups battling for trophies, scholarships and most importantly, “bragging rights.” We’ve got a packed schedule for this year’s Festival. Again, welcome to the Festival — an annual March weekend which has become a tradition in the Washington area as the place to be for great jazz and special performances.

We’re Glad You’re Here!

Teresa Johnson, Principal Robyn Lady, Directory of Student Services, Performing Arts Supervisor Drew Ross, Director of Bands Donna Bell, V.P. for Bands, Chantilly Music Boosters Chris Singleton, Associate Director of Bands Beth Smith, President, Chantilly Music Boosters Liz and Tim Lisko, Festival Coordinators

he BCJO presents a variety of big band literature and features some of the District's best musicians each week at the historic Bohemian Caverns. Music from Ellington, Basie, Strayhorn,

Thad Jones, Oliver Nelson, Maria Schneider and originals by band members embrace and challenge the tradition of big band repertoire.

The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra

The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra is a 17-piece big band founded by baritone saxophonist Brad Linde and Bohemian Caverns owner Omrao Brown. Co-directed by Linde and Joe Herrera, the band debuted on April 19, 2010 and performs 51 Mondays out of the year.

Outside of its home on U Street, the BCJO has performed at the Lincoln Theatre, The Smithsonian Institute, Atlas Performing Arts Center, Strathmore, and An Die Musik in Baltimore, and has appeared as part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, the Washington Women in Jazz Festival, Intersections: A New America Arts Festival, and the Petworth Jazz Project.

The ensemble has featured guest soloists including guitarist Yotam Silberstein, tenor saxophonist Ted Brown, baritone saxophonist Frank Basile, progressive hip-hop artist Christylez Bacon, vocalist Christie Dashiell, arranger/composer Eyal Vilner and vocalist Yalla Ballin, and devoted performances to the music of Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. The orchestra was the recipient of the 2012 DC Mayor's Arts Award for Outstanding Emerging Artist and the 2013 Washington Area Music Association award for Big Band.

Please visit www.bohemiancavernsjazzorchestra.com for more information on the band and its members and join us every Monday night from 8pm-11pm at Bohemian Caverns.

The Mark Brandt Trio

The trio format of piano, bass, and drums has been a “traditional” configuration for small-group jazz since the big-band swing era and before. It is often the preferred ensemble for pianists, bassists, and drummers as it offers equal creative musical exploration to each member, and in the best of circumstances, functions more like a small symphony rather than three individual jazz musicians.

Shared backgrounds and experiences among the musicians are a plus, but such things are not as essential as a musical simpatico. From the inception of the very first Mark Brandt Trio until now, the chemistry has been evident among the players. Along with Mark Brandt, the current trio is comprised of Shaun Jurek on bass, and Russell Lucas on drums.

These three musicians possess a unique ability to move effortlessly from a large variety of traditional and contemporary jazz styles and genres within a set, and often within a song, while maintaining a cohesive and lyrical sound. The most common word used to describe the music of this trio is “elegant.”

Each fall, the Ensemble partners with the Fairfax County Law Foundation in “Jazz 4 Justice.” The performance is dedicated to raising funds for valuable work provided to the community by the Law Foundation. Educational programs for area youth about the adverse legal and medical effects of drug and alcohol abuse; courthouse tours with education about the judicial system for junior high students in Fairfax County; operation of the Pro Bono Program, providing legal services for Fairfax County residents who cannot afford legal services; and programs to counsel at-risk youth and victims of domestic violence. Continually growing and evolving as the most diverse university in the nation, George Mason University’s Jazz program has much to offer its students. Drawing on the resources of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, students have the opportunity to study with top performers in jazz. No other music puts so much emphasis on the importance of the individual and individual expression. In this light, student performance opportunities include the traditional Big Band, but coupled with a strong emphasis on small groups, improvisation, and personal growth. “Well, you know—They say music speaks louder than words so we would rather voice our opinion that way if you don’t mind —-Good!” - Charlie Parker For more information about Jazz at George Mason University, visit

Middle school big bands and high school combos will perform competitively on Friday, March 22nd and high school big bands on Saturday, March 23rd. Trophies will be presented for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place combo and middle school bands at the end of Friday night's performances. On Saturday night, the three top high school bands will be judged on a second performance. Trophies for 1st, 2nd

and 3rd place bands and outstanding individual performances will be recognized during the Awards Ceremony following the Finalists’ banquet. If a Finalist Band is unable to perform for the final judging, the adjudicators may select a replacement.

Members of all bands must be currently enrolled students of the school they represent. Bands must select a variety of music for their performance. One selection should be a swing chart and the following two should be of contrasting styles. Scores/charts may be provided for the adjudicators at the option of the director. Since many “classic” Big Band charts do not have scores, we cannot require them. Often judges find it easier to make constructive comments to groups if the scores are available. Copies of scores or charts will not be accepted without written permission of the publisher.

Groups that exceed their allotted performance time will be penalized. We do our best to stay on time. Enjoy the show!

Festival Rules

The Mark Brandt Trio is sponsoring three $500 scholarships to seniors planning to major or minor in music in college. The judges select the scholarship winners from the list of musicians recommended by their band directors.

George Mason University awards one full scholarship and four partial scholarships to its Summer Jazz Workshop. Participants experience an intensive week of combos, big band, improvisation, jazz theory, master classes, jam sessions, and more. These musicians are selected by the judges from the list of musicians recommended by their band directors. Nominations are restricted to 9th – 11th grade musicians. The GMU Summer Jazz Workshop runs from June 23rd to June 28th, http://potomacacademy.gmu.edu/Summer/Jazz/SummerJazz.html

Contemporary Music Center awards two gift certificates for store credit to the "Best All-Around Rhythm Section Member." One is awarded on Friday and one on Saturday. These recipients are selected by the judges.
