SYSTEM APPLICATIONS

IBM AS400/System 3X APPLICATION BASICSOriginally, IBM AS/400 and System 3X cabling guidelines specified that terminals be daisy-chained from the host using twinax cable. Today twinax isreplaced with unshielded twisted pair cable (UTP) and the daisy-chain is replaced by a bus-wired architecture allowing up to seven devices to be bridgedto one host port. Baluns are used to connect the host and terminals to the twisted pair cabling.

MOLEX PREMISE NETWORKS CHANNEL SOLUTIONAttach a Molex Premise Networks twinax balun to the controller and run a line cord to a passive hub in the communications closet. Patch from the hubto a 24 Port HD Patch panel and run UTP cable directly to a USO II wallplate at the workstation. Next, connect a line cord from the wallplate to the terminal using a twinax balun.

SYSTEM APPLICATIONS

IBM 3270 APPLICATION BASICSThe IBM 3270 system utilizes a star topology consisting of an IBM mainframe connected to a controller that is connected to terminals. It was originallydesigned to be installed with 93 ohm coax cable (RG62) and supported communication speeds up to 2.35 Mbps. Baluns are used at the terminals andcontroller to run the signal over 100 ohm twisted pair cabling. It is generally acceptable to use multiple conductor cables (such as 25-pair) to minimizecost and space requirements.

MOLEX PREMISE NETWORKS CHANNEL SOLUTIONAttach Molex Premise Networks Twinax baluns to each of the 16 channels of the 3270 controller and connect them to a 16-channel octopus cable.Run a 25-pair feeder cable from the octopus to a 24P Telco Patch Panel. Patch to a 48 Port HD Patch 4 panel and run UTP Cat 5E cable directly to anUSO II wallplate at the workstation. Then, run a line cord from the wallplate to a Twinax balun at the terminal.

SYSTEM APPLICATIONS

Modular 10Base-T HubAPPLICATION BASICSThe “T“ in 10BASE-T stands for “twisted” and refers to the twisted-pair wire used for this Ethernet application.

The IEEE 802.3 10BASE-T specification is the standard for Ethernet communication over 100 ohm UTP cabling for local area networks. 10Base-T operates over two pairs of wires, one pair for “receive” data signals and the other pair for “transmit” data signals. The two wires in each pair are twisted together for the entire length of the segment (this improves the signal carrying characteristics). Category 3 cabling is the minimum requirementfor 10Base-T; however, most users are upgrading to Category 5E and beyond. Physical connection for 10Base-T is an 8-wire modular jack.

MOLEX PREMISE NETWORKS CHANNEL SOLUTIONFrom a hub with a modular jack interface drop a patch cord to a 24 Port HD patch panel. Run UTP cable from the patch panel to a USO II wallplate atthe work station. Next, connect a line cord from the wallplate to the terminal via a transceiver/network interface card.

SYSTEM APPLICATIONS

100Base-T (Ethernet)APPLICATION BASICS100Base-T is a networking standard that supports data transfer rates up to 100 Mbps. Because it is 10 times faster than 10Base-T Ethernet, it is oftenreferred to as Fast Ethernet. Like Ethernet, 100Base-T is based on the CSMA/CD LAN access method. There are several different cabling schemes thatcan be used with 100Base-T, including: 100Base-TX (2-pair /Category 5), 100Base-T4 (4-pair/all categories) and 100Base-FX (2-strand optical fiber).

MOLEX PREMISE NETWORKS CHANNEL SOLUTIONFrom a modular hub with an RJ interface run a line cord to a 24 Port HD patch panel. Then, run Category UTP cable to an USO II wall outlet. Next, connect a line cord from the wallplate to the terminal via a transceiver/network interface card.

SYSTEM APPLICATIONS

1000Base-T Copper (Gigabit Ethernet)APPLICATION BASICS1000Base-T is the most current version of Ethernet supporting data transfer rates of up to 1000 Mbps (one gigabit). The initial investment in1000Base-T is in network interface cards (NICs), hubs, switches and the cabling infrastructure. The 1000Base-T standard specifies operation over aninstalled base of Category 5/5E cabling and is backwards compatible with 10/100Base-T, so most system upgrades will not require an additionalinvestment in the cabling. 1000Base-T will also run over the proposed Category 6 and Category 7 copper cabling systems. However, we recommendusing Category 6 components when installing a new system to support the Gigabit Ethernet protocol.

MOLEX PREMISE NETWORKS CHANNEL SOLUTIONFrom a 1000Base-T hub with an RJ interface run a patch cord to an 24 Port HD patch panel. Run UTP cable from the patch panel to a USO II wallplateat the work station. Next, connect a line cord from the wallplate to the terminal via a transceiver/network interface card.

SYSTEM APPLICATIONS

ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) – UTPAPPLICATION BASICSAsynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is a transfer protocol that can support megabit to gigabit transfer speeds without being tied to a specific physicalmedium. ATM transmits data in fixed length packets called cells. The Physical layer defines the electrical characteristics and network interfaces. Thislayer “puts the bits on the wire.” ATM is not tied to a specific type of physical transport. Through LAN Emulation (LANE), ATM works with existingEthernet and Token Ring networks.

MOLEX PREMISE NETWORKS CHANNEL SOLUTIONFrom an ATM hub with a modular connector interface drop a patch cord to a 48 Port HD patch panel. Run UTP cable from the patch panel to aUSO II wallplate at the work station. Then, connect a line cord from the wallplate to the terminal.

RS232APPLICATION BASICSThe standard PC comes equipped with two RS232 ports designated as COM1 and COM2 predominantly used for a mouse or modem connection. The PCalso has standard addresses for two additional RS232 ports for other devices requiring a second RS232 card or “COMM CARD.” Typically RS232 cardshave two channels with provision for up to 25 pins each. However, most applications require 8 pins or less and can operate via modular RJ connectors. To accomplish this, a passive adapter is used which separates the send and receive lines into different pairs.

MOLEX PREMISE NETWORKS CHANNEL SOLUTIONAttach a 25-pin adapter for each channel to the DTE system device and install a UTP octopus. Run a feeder cable from the octopus to a Mod Telco PatchPanel. Then, connect a patch cord to a 48 Port HD patch panel. Finally, run cable directly from the HD Patch to a USO II wallplate and connect a linecord to the terminal or other device via a 25-pin adapter.

UTP Token RingAPPLICATION BASICSDeveloped in the 1970s, the Token Ring network is still IBM's primary local area network (LAN) technology and is second only to Ethernet/IEEE 802.3in general LAN popularity. The term Token Ring generally refers to both IBM's Token Ring network and IEEE 802.5 networks as they are almostidentical, although the specification differs slightly. For example, IBM's Token Ring network specifies a star-wired ring topology using a device calledmultistation access unit (MSAU); 802.5 does not. Typically, IBM Token Ring networks use twisted pair cabling.

MOLEX PREMISE NETWORKS CHANNEL SOLUTIONFrom a Token Ring MAU with RJ45 interface, run a patch cord to a 24 Port HD patch panel. Run UTP twisted pair cable from the HD patch panel to aUSO II or Synergy wallplate at the work station. Next, connect a line cord from the wallplate to the terminal via a token ring media filter.

Terminal ServersAPPLICATION BASICSTerminal Servers are a device which connects many terminals, PCs, printers, modems and other RS-232 devices to a local area network through onenetwork connection. They are a cost-effective, flexible device for connecting terminals to a host in an 802.3/Ethernet LAN. They provide high densityservice and significant savings in cabling and installation. Terminal servers handle asynchronous communications speeds up to 38.4 Kbps.

MOLEX PREMISE NETWORKS CHANNEL SOLUTIONDepending on the particular manufacturer, connection to the terminal server will be via Dtype adapters or direct modular connection (RJ). Assuming a50-pin connection, attach a 25-pair adapter for each channel to the terminal server and attach a UTP octopus cable to the adapters. Run a feeder cablefrom the octopus cable to a Mod Telco Patch Panel. Then, connect a patch cord to a 24 Port HD patch panel. SYSTEM APPLICATIONS

ISDNAPPLICATION BASICSISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) is a high-speed, fully digital telephone service that works over existing copper telephone wiring. It carriesvoice, data, fax and video. ISDN is available from a server provider either as basic rate of two 64 kbs channels plus a 16 kbs signaling channel or a primary rate of 1.544 mbs. Connection to ISDN services is via PBXs, cluster controllers, LANs, and multiplexers. Typically, the ISDN topology specifies an RJ45 modular jack connector (plug/jack) at the termination points with T568A/B configuration. Terminal devices (digital phones, computers) arestar-wired with each device home run to the network termination.

MOLEX PREMISE NETWORKS CHANNEL SOLUTIONFrom the network equipment (controller), run a patch cord to an 24 Port HD patch panel. Run UTP twisted pair cable from the HD patch panel to aUSO II or Synergy wallplate at the work station. Then, connect a line cord from the wallplate to the terminal device.

SYSTEM APPLICATIONS

1000Base SX/LX FiberAPPLICATION BASICSBecause of its low loss and high noise immunity, fiber is typically used in Gigabit Ethernet networks for connecting repeaters between buildings and for spanning extended distances as an IRL (Inter-Repeater Link). The IEEE 802.3z task force developed the 1000Base-SX/LX protocol for half and fullduplex transmission to support either multimode or singlemode runs in the cable plant.

TP-PMDAPPLICATION BASICSTP-PMD (Twisted Pair-Physical Media Dependent) is the implementation of FDDI protocols over twisted-pair copper cable providing data rates of 100Mbps and using a star-wired Token Ring architecture. FDDI TP-PMD supports distances of about 100 meters from desktop to concentrator. The ANSI standard (ANSI X3T9.5) recognizes only two types of cables for TP-PMD: shielded twisted pair (STP) and unshielded twisted pair (UTP). STP cablingadheres to EIA/TIA 568A specifications. UTP must be data-grade cabling - Category 5 or higher.

MOLEX PREMISE NETWORKS CHANNEL SOLUTIONIncoming optical fiber is terminated in a 24 Port FMS Termination Drawer with 6-Pak/Adapter Plates. A fiber patch cord connects to the LAN hub. A UTPpatch cord is run from the hub to an 24 Port HD patch panel. C5E UTP cable is run between the panel and a USO II wallplate with C5E module. Then, a patch cord connects the workstation to the wallplate.
