‘21st century will belong to India’ TNN | May 21, 2017, 02.27 AM IST

AHMEDABAD: Union minister of state (MoS) for finance and corporate affairs Arjun Ram

Meghwal on Saturday attributed India's growth to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Meghwal

was speaking at the 18th convocation of Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India

(EDII) at Bhat village, Gandhinagar.

"With Modi's aura becoming bigger globally, it seems that the 21st century will to belong to

India," Meghwal said. "In 2019, India will compete with China, Japan, and Russia."

Meghwal's convocation speech was delivered to 98 graduating students of the institute and

guests.

Quoting a report of the US department of agriculture, Meghwal said, "The Indian economy

will become bigger than that of countries such as the UK, Japan, France and Germany by

2030." At the convocation, 75 students received the post-graduate diploma in business

entrepreneurship and 23 students were conferred the post-graduate diploma in development

studies. Dr Sunil Shukla, the director of EDII, and M K Jain, MD and CEO of IDBI Bank Ltd,

were among those who attended the convocation ceremony.

Why are IAS couples unhappy?

Meghwal, who is known for his funny remarks, demonstrated his gift when he started talking

about the happiness index. He gave the example of an IAS couple. He asked the students,

"Have you ever seen an IAS couple? They are many. In government events, their hotel

rooms are separate. So how could there be happiness? This should be studied in behavioral

science."

India, China as beauty contestants

Meghwal said, "Many times, a girl with beautiful physical structure cannot win a beauty

contest because she lacks moral beauty and character. Similarly, China seems a big

economy, but India has character and morals of a democracy which will help her to become

the leader of Asia in the 21st century."

Country's tax net grew in three years of Modi's rule:

Meghwal Ahmedabad, May 20 Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal today said the country's tax net has grown due to the Centre's policies directed at the shadow economy in the last three years. "In the last three years, we laid a strong foundation for economic reform, which has helped increase economic activities. The biggest reform is towards financial inclusion -- from Jan Dhan account to social security measures, from demonetisation to digital transaction," Meghwal, Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs, said here. He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 18th annual convocation of the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII). "In the last three years, we have managed to hit the shadow economy, which is estimated at 23 per cent. We have attacked it through our policies. When it weakens, our tax net will increase, and we can see our tax net increasing due to this," he said. "Our revenue collection has increased and the number of people paying income tax has also increased. If this continues to happen, we shall be able to provide more money for development," said Meghwal. Speaking to the students, Meghwal said the country is well placed to become an economic superpower. "China may be big in terms of its size, but India is a democratic society, something where China fails. Atal-ji (former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee) said that 21st century will be Asia's, but (Narendra) Modi-ji said it will be Asia's and in that too, India's," he said. Meghwal also said the Centre's focus on entrepreneurship has brought about a paradigm shift in terms of the society's outlook towards it. "Till a few years ago, entrepreneurship was considered a prerogative of only rich and wealthy, or of those who were from a family business background. But it is nice to see how this discipline has broken all myths and barriers and has caught the fancy of people from all sections of society," he said. Ninety eight students today graduated from EDII.
