My relationships with Policy Makers: Four Key Questions

1. Do they see me as a PARTNER?

2. Do they see me as a RESOURCE?

3. Do they see me as HONEST and my work as having INTEGRITY?

4. Do they see my solutions as VIABLE and EFFECTIVE?

The BAR WalkThe Neighborhood Walk, The Tailgate Walk

• Chance for policy makers and community leaders to “see” the reality of an environment

• MUST be framed AND debriefed

The Message Box:Pass the New Driver’s License Bill

The current driver’s license system is woefully behind the rest of the nation.

•NE is one of 5 states that hasn’t upgraded.

•EASY TO MAKE A FAKE DUPLICATE•EASY TO TAMPER & FALSIFY

ORIGINALS

The current system hurts Nebraskans•Citizens vulnerable to identity theft and fraud•Tampering allows underage access to alcohol & tobacco•High toll on industry in fraud; cost passed on to consumers•NE driver’s license no longer secure ID for banking

We need to pass the new Digital Driver’s License Bill

The new legislation reduces our problems

•Digital stops fake duplicates•Credit card style is tamper proof

•Bar coding helps retailers

The new legislation adds value for citizens

•DMV keeps personal info – no privacy breech

•Renew on-line•Take the best picture

Lessons from NU Directions:

•OUR issue/interests may not be sufficient to pass the legislation/ordinance. We need to work with other partners who may have different interests, and show them how our policy meets their interests.

•Key credible spokespeople are critical. They must be prepared, trained, and provided full support. Remember that “credible” is read differently by different audiences. The Mayor, Police Chief is not ALWAYS the best spokesperson.

•Visual images are essential for good media coverage.

•Always know what other cities, states are doing. Research in model policies is ALWAYS worthwhile.

•It’s all about RELATIONSHIPS! Seek consensus from stakeholders who might oppose the policy EARLY.
