Mother’s Day Tea On Thursday, May 11th Toberman hosted a Mother’s Day Tea for mothers and
their children to join us for cookies, tea, and bonding time together. Pastor Lisa
of the United Methodist Church in San Pedro provided the refreshments for our
guests. Children were able to decorate a teapot picture frame and take a polaroid
picture with their mom to give as a gift. Musical Miracles donated the craft
supplies. Mothers also received a purse donated by Adia as a token of
appreciation. Thank you to all those that attended and helped to make this night
a success.

Toberman Academy
ITEP Summer Interns
Congratulations to the Toberman Academy After School program for being the recipients of
the 8th Annual Above and Beyond Award for their proven excellence in community
leadership and service. Sandra Rascon will be accepting the award at the Avenue of the Arts
in Costa Mesa on Saturday June 24, 2017
Toberman has collaborated with ITEP a second year for the Summer of 2017! ITEP provides
high school interns for six weeks of the summer. During the six weeks, they learn how to
function in the real world, while learning new skills and enhancing their interests in different
fields. Last year, we were honored to host three interns and we hope to have even more this
summer. Pictured here at the ITEP Employer
Orientation, on a Harbor Boat tour, are
representatives from all the hosting employer
organizations. You may notice some of our
Leadership Team – Michele Fallon, top row,
Sandra Rascon and Jenee’ Martin, seated in
the middle aisle. We are looking forward to
another great summer of fun, interns, men-
torship, and most of all, sharing the mission
of Toberman! Thank you ITEP for another
opportunity to be a part of this wonderful
experience!
PV Junior Women’s Club
We would like to thank the Palos Verdes Junior Women's Club
for their generous donation to our Summer Academy and our
Toberman After School Program. Your funds help our youth
receive the resources they need to help them be successful in
expanding their knowledge in and out of the classroom.

Summer Night Lights
Literacy Night On Thursday, May 25th Toberman hosted a Family Literacy Night at Toberman
Neighborhood Center. Parents and children engaged in activities such as; sight word bingo,
compound word matching games, roll story and make bookmark crafts that promoted
literacy and reading. This gave parents and children the opportunity to learn together. Our
volunteer , Gloria, taught a lesson on water cycle. The San Pedro library joined in with their
resources and families were able to sign up for a library card. Parents also got to take home
resources to help their children who received books to start their own literacy at home.
June 28th – August 5th Wednesdays thru Saturdays
August 11th – August 25th Fridays and Saturdays
7pm - 11:30pm
The Summer Night Lights program is a public and private partnership undertaken by the
City of Los Angeles Mayor’s Office of Gang Reduction & Youth Development (“GRYD”)
and The GRYD Foundation. SNL is part of the GRYD Comprehensive strategy, which is
directed at increasing community resiliency to the influence of gangs and gang violence.

host community tours. We will now be offering private site tours to all
interested by reservation only. These tours will continue to provide the history
of Toberman, programs, services, upcoming activities and events. However, if
you are interested in a specific program, the tour will be customized to your

Trustees Corner
The end of our fiscal year is June 30, 2017, and along with
the closing of our financial books, we will also have a transition in our Board of
Trustees Leadership. Our current Board Chairman, David McKenna will step
down and Patty Koester, long time trustee will take David’s position as new
Chair of the Board. David’s leadership of the Board of trustees spans from the
past five years and in the coming fiscal year he will transition to the Past
Chairman’s position. Under David’s leadership the board’s involvement has
increased in fundraising activities, and the implementation of new initiatives.
We thank all of our trustees for their dedication and support.
The average child will eat 1,500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before he/she
graduates from high school. Let’s keep the youth eating healthy, nutritious, and
tasty peanut butter.
Join us to support the Food Pantry during the summer by donating a jar of
peanut butter to help build our sand castle for the youth here at Toberman.
