Dear Fellow Members,

At the last AGM on 2nd July 2017, I promised to keep members apprised on how the Club is doing. I am pleased to inform that as at the end of August, the revenue from our Jackpot, Guestrooms and Deck Bar have improved compared to the same period last year, contributing to an overall increase in total income without taking into account the increase of monthly subscriptions which took effect in August. With better controls and prudent spending, despite inflationary increases in material costs and services, the overall deficit was similar to the same period last year.

When visiting the Club recently, you will have noticed a fresh coat of paint has been applied to the main clubhouse which gives a new look to the Club. New outdoor poolside furniture has also added for members to relax and enjoy at the poolside. For the guest rooms, we are in

the process of changing all the guestroom doors and door frames, and adding a few more items to make your stay a more comfortable and enjoyable one for all.

We were recently informed by Sport Singapore and SLA that URA needs more time to evaluate the plot of land currently occupied by CBC. Sport Singapore and SLA have given the Club another year of land lease extension till 31 Dec 2018. Sport Singapore has also reiterated that it will continue to head the land lease discussion on behalf of the Club with SLA and the other authorities.

With effect from 1 November 2017, all Clubs operating Jackpot facilities will be required by the authorities to adhere to new licensing requirements. The good news is that the new criteria will be implemented in stages.

We are working closely with the relevant authorities to iron out some of the procedures and implementation schedules. These new rules when implemented may cause some inconvenience to our members, and we seek your kind understanding and patience in this matter. Our staff will be trained to provide any assistance required, and they will do their utmost best to ensure minimum interruption for all our Jackpot users. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Joyous New Year!

Thank you.

Club Chairman,Steven Yuen

Inter-Social Clubs Golf Tournament (ISCGT) – 2nd Leg

12 Jul 2017

The 2nd Leg ISCGT Golf event was hosted by the Eurasian Association at the Orchid Country Club. I was pleasantly surprised by the strong turnout of our CBC golfers comprising 16 club members and 4 invited guests. The overcast weather was forgiving, which made golfing with members from the other clubs even more pleasant. The tournament concluded with a sumptuous dinner and interaction between members of the respective clubs. I was also impressed with our brand new bright yellow turtleneck club t-shirt which was comfortable to wear. Thanks to our Golf Committee for making this event happen.

Musculoskeletal Health Talk

16 Jul 2017

sports

As a participant I found the talk very detailed and easy to understand. It was an eye opener for me. Prior to this talk, I was unaware that things we do in our daily life and even our sleeping position can affect our posture and health. Thus, I gained valuable insights and knowledge about my body and how it works.

The speaker Mr Gabriel Ng also explained what kinds of simple exercises we should do, and how minor changes in our daily lives can improve and strengthen our body and muscles.

The event was well prepared and the staff efficiently assisted any members who required information about the talk.

I think that more such lifestyle talks should be hosted by the club to educate members on how to improve our lifestyles. I would also like to thank the committee members and staff for organizing this event. I look forward to future similar health workshops soon.

Changi Beach Club and Chinese Swimming Club faced off again. The two clubs’ tennis teams have been playing invitational and friendly matches for many years. Both teams had so much fun on the courts from 3-7pm, playing more than 20 matches. We had a great time catching up with friends, accompanied by the good food provided by Cranwell Roadhouse Cafe. We will certainly have more years to come!! Join us at the Inter-club doubles league.

Allan Ng, Tennis Convenor

Recently I received a chat message from Allan - CBC’s Tennis Convenor, which sums up the warm and casual relationship between our 2 tennis fraternities. The thread went - “Hi David, interested to do a friendly on a Saturday next month?“. I replied, “Sure, think it’s CSC’s turn to host”. Allan’s candidly responded “Haha, I asked first, we host! You can host next time!”.

CSC players have always enjoyed CBC’s hospitality and court play during their visits. Last Saturday’s friendly was as always ... fun and exciting tennis. I would like to take this opportunity to thank convenor Allan and CBC players for the invitation and gracious reception. We look forward to hosting the next game.

sports

“The CBC Bowling Section celebrated Singapore’s 52nd Birthday with our National Day Bowl held on 6 August 2017. There were 4 teams with a total of 28 participants decked out in our national colours, locked in keen competition. Ultimately Team Wee Kim Wee came out on top. The prize-giving took place during our celebratory buffet dinner while members relaxed and enjoyed each other’s company. It was an enjoyable occasion”.

Roland Tan, Bowling Convenor

“I think it was a good opportunity for me to bond with new people and broaden my horizons as a person. When I started participating in CBC bowling events, I didn’t know much about interacting but after a few weeks, I see myself improving. I am grateful to the organisers of this event”.

Line Dance Jam “The Chan Ah Kow Hall hosted about 150 enthusiastic members and friends gathered for the inaugural line dance jam. It was initiated and organised by Ms Pearlyn Yap and Mr Tony Loh together with the Club’s Social Committee.

Participants started to arrive as early as 1pm, dressed to the theme in vibrant co-ordinated chequered attire. The line dance jam began with the Social Committee Chairman Mr Garry Lim’s welcome address followed by him performing the first line dance number ‘Electric Slide’, led by dance trainer Ms Jaclyn Yeoh. Everyone in the lines busied their feet and swayed to the beats and rhythm of the music. A total of sixty line dance songs including the evergreen favourites such as ‘Cowboy Cha Cha’, ‘Silver Threads’ and ‘Rio’ were played.

The atmosphere was filled with fun and lively moments. Many participants danced non-stop to the numbers while enjoying the company of friends, and

capturing the happy times with ‘selfies’. The event rounded off with the Chairman presenting a token of appreciation to Ms Yeoh. The participants, though tired and with aching feet, shared wonderful moments and learned dance steps from each other. We look forward to the next line dance jam at Changi Beach Club.”

National Day 2017

08 Aug 2017

The Deck Bar was filled with members and guests to celebrate the Nation’s 52nd birthday, partying the night away. Lynn & the Lovebirds played pop and rock favourites for the dancers dressed in red and white, mingled with local folk tunes which we grew up with. There was even an exuberant ‘Conga’ line which snaked right around the bar counter. Party games and a parade for the ‘Best Dressed’ kept the tempo upbeat. The programme concluded with several national day songs culminating in the ‘Majulah Singapura’, and a giant-sized national flag cake.

“It was a memorable experience for me. It was my first time playing the ‘Pass the card with your mouth’ game, ‘pole dancing’ and ‘cat-walking’. The band was great playing nice oldies that we could dance and sway to. We had great fun!”

Member Ms Lee Kai Ting

The Club would also like to thank Pilot, Asia Pacific Brewery and The French Cellar for their support and sponsorship.

“When I was invited to join the Malacca trip for durians, I was rather reluctant as I had been there many times. As it turned out, I was pleasantly surprised. Besides the ‘all-you-can-eat durians’, the interesting itinerary differed from other ‘run-of-the-mill’ tours most of us might have experienced. The meals gave us a variety of local delights, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Best of all was the great company - a mixture of seniors and younger members and their guests. We got to know members whom we would not otherwise have had the chance to meet. (Members should take the opportunity to join such club outings, sports and social events to interact with fellow members). Thank you CBC for a weekend well spent.”

Robert Tan

“Our whole family enjoyed the Malacca trip organised. We walked down Jonker Street soaking up the night market atmosphere, cruised down the Malacca River, learnt a bit of history, visited some cottage industries, came away with many edible ‘souvenirs’, did some factory outlet shopping, and of course, had the fantastic durian lunch! Altogether, it was a relaxing and enriching trip. Thanks again to all the organisers!”

05 Cowboy Town

“Our trip to charming Melaka began with our scenic road trip through traditional kampong houses and lush vegetation along the highway. Lunch at Malacca town was mouth-watering Nonya fare - ‘Sedap!’ Then we were whisked away to the 3D interactive park where realistic paintings, image visuals and artworks came alive. We had a Portuguese dinner by the sea front, where we were swarmed by groups of hawkers, touting their best dishes. It was pleasantly chaotic. The Portuguese dinner was a fusion of Chinese cooking with mix Malay spices. The evening scenic tour along the Malacca River was splendid. The busy trading port has transformed into a pleasant heritage river attraction. We admired the antiquated buildings and bridges along the river. Then we were off shopping time at Jonker Street night market.

The next day, we visited a traditional Nonya Kueh family outlet and the MAMEE (instant noodle) museum. For lunch,

we savoured Malacca’s famous Hainanese chicken rice balls. Then it was ‘shop-till-we-drop’ at Freeport factory outlet (over a hundred brands). The day ended in TEXAS style at Cowboy Town amusement park. The Red Indian Show was spectacular and the A’Famosa parade featured an explosive glittering firework display.

Lunch on Day 3 was the pinnacle of our trip - a buffet of freshly picked durians. We savoured the king of fruits with passion. We then proceeded to local food stores purchasing freshly-made local delicacies, and visited the Stingless Bee Farm to sample quality honey and royal jelly, before returning to Singapore.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and made good friends. A special thanks to our friendly tour guides and CBC organisers for making this Durian Trip so FRUITful indeed.” Andrea Chew

We met at Changi Ferry terminal bright and early. After the short bum-boat ride, we arrived at Pulau Ubin. Most of us chose to cycle while a few decided to walk. Whether on bike or foot, we were all cast back to our ‘Kampong days’ of Singapore in the 1960s. Many places of interest were created by the quarrying activities in those bygone days. Susan Pek deftly led us to many of these sites. At noon after cycling, climbing the high scenic spots for scenic photos, and evading the monkey’s food snatching antics, we all returned to the jetty feeling fulfilled, happy and famished.Back at the CBC club house, we were treated to an enticing fragrant nasi lemak meal.It was a day well spent in the generous open-hearted company of CBC members. Let’s do it again and soon!

“The Moringa Health Talk was actually surprising as I didn’t expect to learn so much knowledge about this amazing plant from the speaker such as how it helps to detoxify, enhance our immune system, improve our metabolism and many more. We are used to using the spices and herbs that our parents thought us and their parents thought them. It’s good knowledge to learn that there are healthier replacements. Even the ‘Treasure Drop’ as a sweetener replacement taste really good as a healthier version of sugar. You have to taste it to believe it!”

“I came to hear about the many benefits of the Moringa Tree some three months ago and was just surfing the net to find out more when I was told that there was going to be a talk on this very subject! Without much ado, I signed up for the talk together with my husband and two other friends. The talk did not disappoint us at all. The presenter Mr Bala Tam shared with us the many benefits of this miracle tree. Apparently the United Nations is also encouraging the people in Africa and India to plant this tree, which needs very little water, to overcome their need for nutrition and also clean water! Mr Bala Tam shared that it is easy to plant the tree in Singapore. The only problem was he did not tell us where to get the saplings. But perhaps we may find out more if there is a next talk. Meanwhile, the leaves can be bought in Geylang Serai market and the fruit in NTUC Xrta.”
