Why do Websites track cookies?

There are a number of reasons - they can allow you to autofill username and password boxes on return visits
or can track where you are clicking on the site for market research.

So whats changed In the law?

Websites must now inform visitors that they track cookies so if a visitor is not happy for that to happen
they can leave the site.

No, despite the ICO (Information Commissioner's Office) originally wanting websites to obtain consent, they have deemed that implied consent is satisfactory

It is not enough to update your privacy policy as customers rarely view that page of your site. You must notify them on the page they arrive at your site (which
could be ANY page of your website)

Unfortunately you will have to contact your web designer/developer and ask them to add a small pop up to each page covering the cookies information.
