Tap water is a healthier option than soft drinks.

But according to the Environmental Working Group, there have been 315 pollutants found

in Canada’s tap water since 2004, and over half of these pollutants are completely unregu-

lated and can legally exist in any amount. Just recently, reports have been published that

Canadians are consuming lead 3 times more than the set guidelines by Health Canada.

At the current levels of contamination, the public is starting to question the quality of tap

water and wonders if it is safe enough to drink. Based on these facts, it's no wonder that

Hundreds of thousands of Canadi-ans could be consuming tap water laced with high levels of lead leaching from aging infrastructure and plumbing, a large collection of newly released data and docu-

ments reveals.

While the water generally con-tains no lead when it leaves mu-nicipal treatment plants, the main sources of the contamination are lead service lines — the pipes that connect homes and apart-ment buildings with eight dwell-

ings or less to water mains — as well as plumbing fixtures that con-

tain lead and lead solder.

Many cities said that some of the hundreds of thousands of lead pipes underground would likely not be replaced for decades. In addition, the cities also said it was difficult to

co-ordinate replacements since they would require property owners to pay for changing lead pipes on the private side of the

property line.

In response to questions from Global News and its partners, many municipalities admitted they didn’t even know how many lead service lines are within their city limits, due to inadequate rec-ord-keeping and the lack of re-quirement for some municipali-

ties to conduct tests.
