The General English Program will help students to develop English skills for social, cultural and personal purposes.

Students will develop their confidence in communicating both socially and professionally while increasing fluency and accuracy. This program is suitable for students at a range of English levels commencing at Elementary, and including Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, and Upper-Intermediate.

The Pearson Test of English Preparation Program (PTE PP) will prepare and support students to undertake the Pearson Test of English Academic. Students will work with expert teachers on extending their English language skills through reading, writing, listening, and speaking development.

IES Foundation Year programs guarantee entry into most undergraduate programs at The University of Queensland to all students who meet the specific standards for their chosen program (quotas apply in some programs).

Three programs are available: Standard, Express and Extended. Program placement is determined after consideration of a student’s academic background, English proficiency and desired undergraduate program as well as any other additional needs a student may have.

COURSE STRUCTURE

IES General English class sizes are small with a maximum of 18 students per class. Full time students study 20 hours a week (16 hours of English Language classes and 4 hours of electives). With our program, students can:

ACADEMIC PREPARATION

PEARSON TEST OF ENGLISH PREPARATION

Throughout the PTE Preparation Program, students will work with expert teachers on extending their English language skills through reading, writing, listening, and speaking, including a focus on pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. Each week the course will identify and analyse test items and explicitly instruct students in test taking strategies and skills. Each five-week block of the program includes a PTE practice test which facilitates individualised and focused feedback for each student. This combination of language development, test taking skills and individualised feedback will support students to undertake the Pearson Test of English Academic.

RECREATION AND TOURISM

With its near-perfect climate, Queensland attracts more than 50 per cent of all international tourists to Australia. Queensland’s growing tourism industry has brought an influx of visitors to the capital. A great way to see Brisbane city is from a cruise boat or CityCat or maybe aboard a paddle steamer for a dinner cruise.

The South Bank Parklands are within walking distance of the CBD, located on the Brisbane River. South Bank features waterways, theme attractions, cafes, restaurants, markets and street entertainment. There is even a lifeguard-patrolled city beach.

The Gold Coast is a world-renowned holiday destination with beautiful golden beaches, fun parks, cafes, restaurants and shopping – only a one hour drive south from Brisbane. Just a short drive north of Brisbane are the beautiful

SUPPORT SERVICES FOR FOUNDATION YEAR STUDENTS

STUDENT COUNSELLING

Counsellors provide caring, experienced counselling and advice. Their assistance is readily available throughout the year for any personal or academic issues. Problems may be study focused or related to adjusting to life in another country. Students are encouraged to approach a counsellor as soon as problems present.

Students are also offered access to a 24-hour mobile phone number, which they can call in cases of emergency. This mobile phone is managed by Student Services staff, so issues can be promptly addressed.

ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS

Learning is not restricted to the classroom. A full schedule of afternoon and weekend activities and events keeps students interested, informed and entertained during their studies. Activities range from recreational outings which encourage students to socialise and explore Brisbane.

With the wide diversity of students, learning more about other cultures is important too. Events such as the annual International Food and Culture Festival are a great way of discovering more about the world we share.

Students are invited to join the Student Council. Members of this select group contribute to and participate in the calendar of events and are in a unique position to develop their extra-curricular skills in moving forward to university.

ORIENTATION

At the commencement of each intake, a full orientation program provides students with an introduction to IES College and Brisbane, and gives new students an opportunity to meet their peers. Students are provided with important information about IES College policies and procedures, facilities and services.

IES CAFE

The IES Café is a space for students to hang out and relax between classes. The IES Café is serviced by a barista and provides pre-paid coffee as well as free tea and fruit. At the IES Café, students can catch up with friends, teachers and staff, enjoy lunch on one of the couches.

AIRPORT TRANSFER

Student Services staff arrange for under 18 students to be met at Brisbane International Airport. Students are given a 24-hour phone number in case of changes to flight details. This service is for students only. Please note that this service is compulsory for students under 18 where IES acts as their guardian.

IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH

One of the best ways to improve English proficiency is to speak to people fluent in the language. Located on campus, students can regularly meet with the crew of dynamic language instructors to talk about whatever topic they desire, such as their studies.

As well as improving spoken English, IES Mates improves students’ listening skills.

Make sure that you attach the supporting documents to your application. We will require a certified copy of your passport and current visa letter (if you are already in Australia). IES English Enrolments may ask for more documents, keep an eye out for our e-mails!

STEP 4

If your application is successful, you will receive an offer to study at IES College. Upon accepting your offer, you should pay your fees to confirm your enrolment. IES College will then issue a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) – you will need this document to apply for your student visa.

STEP 5

Now you should apply for your visa. Make sure that you have health insurance to cover for your stay. IES College can assist you with sorting your medical cover.

15 Terms Of Enrolment

Refunds:

1. For Student Visa applicants: IES College agrees to refund within 28 days and without deduction, all fees paid where the student provides acceptable certified evidence that the application made for a student visa was rejected by the Australian immigration authorities.

2. Where IES College has received tuition fees from the agent/parent/student, IES College agrees to refund within 28 days of the receipt of written notice of cancellation by the student (or parent/guardian if the student is under 18), fees paid by or on behalf of the student less the amounts to be retained as detailed below:

• Until six (6) weeks prior to the scheduled beginning of the program there is applicable to all enrolments, a non refundable fee of AUD $100 to cover marketing charges and administrative costs.

• If notice of the cancellation is received between two (2) and six (6) weeks prior to the scheduled beginning of the program, IES College may retain a portion of the fees relating to administrative costs and course levies – 30 percent (%) of the tuition fees paid.

• If notice of cancellation is received less than two (2) weeks prior to the scheduled beginning of the program or after the program has begun there will be no refund of any money paid. If the student was referred to IES College by an Approved Agency, the sum paid to this agency will be non refundable.

3. IES College agrees to refund tuition fees paid to IES College if the offer of a place is withdrawn, except where the offer was made on the basis of incorrect or incomplete information supplied by the student. In this case the same amounts will be retained as detailed under point two (2) above. The date of the offer being withdrawn will correspond with the date of notice of cancellation in point two (2) above.

4. IES College will consider the following exceptional circumstances as grounds for a student’s withdrawal from the program:

• Illness or disability;

• Death of a close family member;

• Political, civil or natural event which prevents the full payment of fees.

When acceptable documentary evidence is produced, refunds will be at the discretion of IES College.

5. In the unlikely event of IES College being unable to deliver the program in full, the student will be offered a refund of all the course money paid to date. The refund will be paid within two (2) weeks of the day on which the program ceased being provided.

6. Refunds will be made in Australian dollars (AUD) as at the date of transaction, and will exclude and currency transfer charges..

7. Refunds or General English makeup classes are not available as a result of occasional missed classes due to minor illness or minor disruptions due to weather, public transport and the like.

8. This agreement and the availability of complaints and appeals processes do not remove the right to take further action under Australian consumer protection laws.

9. Agent Responsibilities, as per the IES Agency Agreement(s);

• Where the student/parent has paid tuition fees directly to the Approved IES Agent and where the student is deemed by IES College entitled to a refund as outlined in point two (2) above, IES College will refund the appropriate portion of the tuition fees (excluding any upfront commission) to the approved agent. The Agent will then refund the student/parent the correct portion of the tuition fees (as per point two (2) above) to the student/parent.

• Where the student/parent has paid tuition fees directly to the Approved IES Agent and where the student is deemed by IES College entitled to a refund as outlined in point three (3) above, IES College will refund to the Approved Agent the tuition fees received from the agent. The Agent will then refund the student/parent the tuition fees (as per point three (3) above) to the student/parent.

• Refunds to the student/parent from an IES Approved Agent, where the Agent has received direct payment for tuition fees, may be issued in local currency, where appropriate.

• IES Approved Agents are to uphold the International Education and Training Agent Code of Ethics, particularly in relation to student refunds.

Fees:

All program fees stated on the IES College website, in IES College program brochures and other IES College marketing material are subject to review and change, at least annually.

Fees will NOT be changed once an Offer Letter / Written Agreement has been issued to a student offering enrolment into an IES College program(s).

A student’s enrolment may be cancelled should they fail to pay the appropriate fees, as outlined in their Offer Letter / Written Agreement.

Program fees must be paid in full in advance (unless otherwise arranged), as outlined in the students Offer Letter / Written Agreement.

Student Responsibilities:

Students studying at IES College under a student visa must abide by all terms and conditions of their visa, including:

• maintain appropriate health insurance during their course; and

• if a student has any school-aged dependants coming to Australia with them, they will be required to pay full fees if they are enrolled in either a government or non-governmental school

In addition to any visa conditions, all students must abide by the rules and regulations of the college as detailed in the Student Handbook relevant to their program. Copies of the Student Handbook(s) are made available to students via the website or a copy can be requested by contacting Student Services.

Students must supply IES College with their current residential address, email address, mobile telephone number and emergency contact information when studying in their program and notify of any change of address within 7 days.

Students must retain a copy of their Offer Letter / Written Agreement, as well as copies of payment receipts for tuition and non tuition fees.
