MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

This has been a year of unprecedented change. As a market leader of the change profession we have been living our own case study both personally and professionally. It’s been a year of two halves, each with its unique flavour, contribution and success.

In this period, we designed and released three animations to educate the market on change, and were able to bring our international volunteers together for planning and collaboration

for the benefit of members. We also started to see members participate more with our webinar offering that was supplementing our face-to-face events.

Things changed rapidly in 2020, our event calendar was disrupted as early as February and we needed to pivot to virtual offerings quickly. Our volunteer and operations teams did a wonderful job of supporting members while adjusting themselves to different lockdown conditions, home schooling and needing to learn new technologies in short timeframes. Our strategy was to support our members quietly, focus on wellbeing and offer financial support by deferring membership payments. We knew everyone was feeling overwhelmed and afraid. You told us you appreciated this and through this period we have experienced two records; our highest membership ever and our highest number of event registrations. We came together as a change community at a time we were experiencing change and it felt supportive and collaborative.

These are exciting times for our profession and the Institute is more relevant than ever. We have appreciated your feedback to know we are on track and constantly enhancing our member experience. By members for members creates a true sense of community.

The coming year is one of investment and evolution. Our systems will be refreshed to offer greater international collaboration across our member community. We are also readying our next edition of CMBoK, associated career pathways for members and publishing of member contributed content.

We look forward to a successful year in 2021!

2O2O AT A GLANCE

Our community and member volunteers have come together in extraordinary ways this year to strengthen our connections in times of isolation, build new capabilities as digital transformation accelerates, and validate their competencies to be recognised as credible professionals.

These activities have all been based on member and member volunteer feedback, its incredible what we can achieve as a profession through our connected community:

• In FY 2020 our community connected through 100 face-to-face member events across six different countries and 17 locations, and 50 local and international virtual events

• Volunteers from different countries were able to meet each other face-to-face for greater impact for our members

• Our bi-monthly member newsletters have become more resource rich to bring you content from across our global network. Our range of resources for members has been extended to include videos, podcasts, webinars and research papers in addition to our live events

• We partnered with Issoria to conduct research on Change Management Offices and provide these insights to our members

• Our community came together to have a voice in actively promoting and instilling anti-racism and inclusivity in our professional practice, recognising we have so much to explore and learn together

• During Covid-19 we supported our community through delaying membership fees and increasing our events over time to reduce the sense of overwhelm

• Our members have enjoyed personal support through the Pandemic through more intimate free flowing exploration sessions in our Member Change Chats

• Three animations have been developed to support the definition of change to the broader community

COUNTRY HIGHLIGHTSThough some of the offerings are similar, each community has its own flavour. Here are a few highlights from around the world.

AUSTRALIAOur largest community and the birthplace of our association. FY 2020 saw a huge increase in member events and collaboration across our three main centres of NSW, Victoria and Queensland. The energy of our volunteers led to regular events with lots of content variation to suit the different needs of our members. Key highlights include:

• Kudos events held simultaneously in three main centres to celebrate the local change community, and recognise members who had been nominated by their fellow members in the categories of Big Brain, Rebel, Newcomer, Social Media Magnet and Community Leader.

• A fantastic new podcast series Career Insights with Accredited Change Manager Masters. It’s been fascinating to hear from some of our most experienced change practitioners, do listen to the podcast series available in the member portal.

• Deep Dive workshops where small groups of members come together to discuss a specific subject – topics have included Strategic and Executive Change and Different Types of Change.

• Large scale creative events hosted by the NSW chapter and a national program of monthly member only webinars in 2019.

SHARING PROFESSIONAL INSIGHTS

We are committed to growing our professional voice across international markets. This takes many forms, from publishing media articles in the UK, to sharing our insights and trends through interviews and webinars.

We are also committed to bringing practice and thought leadership insights to and from our members. We have experienced considerable support and engagement from our members on the following international offerings:

Global VoicesA quarterly webinar series of thought leaders who share their insights for the benefit of our members. This year we’ve learned from thought leaders such as Julie Hodges, Richard Sheridan, and Philippe Rosinki. The recordings can be found in our member portal.

Learning CircleA quarterly discussion about critical topics in change management. Reading material is shared with a member panel of experienced practitioners, they come together to discuss their insights on the reading and how it resonates with their practice experience. These podcasts can be found in our member portal.

Global TrendsAt the end of 2019 we researched and gathered trends that we could see for this new decade. This was shared in conjunction with our strategic partner APMG. Little did we know that the key predictions would be accelerated in the first year of this decade due to the Pandemic. These resources are available in the member portal.

A Change PerspectiveAn article for the change community focussing on actions, recovery and adapting to the new reality of the Covid-19 health crisis and its impact on business in the change management context. This article is available in the member portal.

I love being part of an organisation which shares change best practice across the globe. Seeing how different change professionals are addressing current challenges helps me to apply different lenses to my own work.

EMBRACING DIVERSITY

Our members rallied following the death of George Floyd with a desire to explore what anti-racism and inclusivity might mean in our profession. We have ignited the conversation and are committed to the exploration, discussion and action required to make our community inclusive. This isn’t the role of one person or a committee, it takes commitment and action by everyone. We all know that change happens one person at a time.

Here is the statement produced by our members, you will also find a suggested roadmap for change on our website. Please join us on this journey and explore your own awareness of how to make a positive difference to those around you and those you serve in the course of your practice.

Black Lives Matter Statement by Change Management Institute members

The Change Management Institute is a global professional association which supports, inspires and grows the capability of change professionals of all backgrounds. Our vision is “to be at the forefront of all things change”.

We see a future world that upholds the highest standards of equality for our members and the communities we serve. We are committed to actively driving anti-racism and inclusivity. This is not a political discussion, but rather a civil, human rights and social justice discussion. Silence is not an option.

So, we say their names: George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and so many others. As change managers we have the power to influence and guide systemic change in organizations and society. It starts with each of us.

Our profession’s biggest fear is not to lose an assignment or a client, but to lose our humanity. As change managers, it is our duty to speak up and lead with empathy. We proudly and loudly proclaim that Black Lives Matter! #BlackLivesMatter. We believe there is an opportunity to encourage greater representation of Black, Indigenous People and People of Colour within our profession.

We wish to be a strong and consistent ally, to live up to our vision and our commitment to Black lives, diversity and human rights. We have work to do and are committed to doing that work, to educating and re-educating ourselves and our community. We have started the conversations, have rallied to develop an action orientated roadmap for us as an association to help support our members in their own professional endeavours. We have reached out and engaged with others in our field for greater impact.

We need to be bold, open and compassionate in our explorations and learnings. Change can be confronting and challenging but with open hearts and minds we will consciously contribute to a more positive way forward together. #BlackLivesMatter

We are all people first.

PROFESSIONAL ADVANCEMENT

We are committed to building capability and enabling professional credibility of our members by endorsing demonstration of professional standards. Within our community that means demonstrating our competencies.

In this financial year we have seen a 15% increase in members becoming Accredited Change Managers. Our member volunteers have demonstrated significant commitment to achieving these standards and our members around the world are doing the same.

In today’s world of so many training certifications, stand out from the crowd with a professional accreditation by an industry body that validates what you can do.

THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBER VOLUNTEERS

As a by member for member association, many of the benefits you receive would not be possible without the considerable commitment of time and energy from member volunteers. Our volunteers are passionate about the profession and facilitate our community connecting for change.

On behalf of our membership we would like to recognise and thank every member volunteer for their contribution. It’s what makes us such a connected and recognised community.

Although there are too many to mention individually, there are some who have served in leadership roles and have stepped aside in this financial year that we would like to personally acknowledge for their contribution to members:

• Connie Henson, General Director

• Simon Corcoran, Country Lead Australia

We would also like to thank the Directors who have served their terms and passed the baton forward:

• Elizabeth Fahey

• Gillian Perry

• Raegan Cairney

During my time as a volunteer I have actively contributed to the growth of our local community of professionals who are as equally passionate about the discipline as I am. Collaborating and engaging our community gives me great pleasure. It has been extremely motivating and encouraging to pursue this knowledge and learn from our community of practice.

I believe there is a unique opportunity, given the current global realities, to be a support to our communities and

organisations, to grow the Institute’s reach and create greater positive impact in the world of change – and I want to be

part of making that happen.
