Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc. Presents the 31st Annual Hot Dog Caper — Arrrgh You Ready?

On Thursday, October 2, 2014, Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc. welcomes the university community back to campus with the 31st annual Hot Dog Caper. Students, faculty, and staff gather together every year in the University Park to enjoy free hot dogs, chips, ice cream, and refreshments. This welcome-back tradition also includes live music, games, and fun activities.

Every year, a unique theme is chosen for the Hot Dog Caper and a logo is designed to complement that theme. The 31st annual Hot Dog Caper will encompass a pirate theme filled with pirate-related décor, props, and entertainment. This year’s logo features a hot dog sporting classic pirate attire, including a hat, hook, sword, and boots. The hot dog’s long beard adds to the overall pirate appearance. This logo can be found on all volunteer t-shirts, signage, HotDogCaper.com, and throughout the University Park on the day of the event.

The 31st annual Hot Dog Caper will also feature two photo booths, airbrush tattoo artists, prizes, sponsor booths, games hosted by ASI, and live music from Nesta Steel Drum Band. To further enrich the ambiance, pirate impersonators will be mingling with the crowd and will be available for pictures. Furthermore, there will be a giant dual-lane inflatable slide in the shape of a pirate ship being overtaken by a massive kraken.

Every year, a team of over 300, including administrators, staff, and athletes, sport their Hot Dog Caper t-shirts and volunteer their time to distribute thousands of hot dogs, veggie dogs, chips, drinks, and ice cream bars. Last year, 15,752 hot dogs/veggie dogs, 8,800 bags of chips, 11,500 Pepsi products, and 10,992 ice cream bars were served.

The Hot Dog Caper is made possible through the partnership of Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc., Pepsi Beverages Company, Associated Students, Inc., Facilities Planning & Management, Hoffy, First Class Vending, Intercollegiate Athletics, AT&T, Mophie, and Costco. This is just one of the many ways the Foundation gives back to the campus. Over the past 48 years, the Foundation has given millions of dollars to the university to fund many campus student programs, scholarships, and infrastructure.

Parking Changes at Kellogg West

When the construction started on the Collins College expansion, a fairly substantial part of the Kellogg West (KW) Parking Lot L was fenced off to be used for the contractor’s construction site. This decreased the total number of parking spots from 334 down to 200. These parking spots will not be available again until the project is completed in December 2015.

With the loss of these parking spots, KW has had to figure out ways they could mitigate the impact on guests and business.

As a result, KW came up with the following practices, which are to become effective September 22:

1. KW/Collins College of Hospitality and Management (CCHM) parking hang tags will be issued to only: • Full-time KW staff • CCHM full-time and part-time faculty • CCHM full-time staff.

There will be no student or part-time employee parking except for CCHM HRT 383L-02/ Restaurant at Kellogg Ranch (RKR) students working the evening shift at RKR

2. KW/CCHM parking hang tags will be issued on a weekly basis instead of the monthly hang tags that are currently being issued.

• All weekly hang tags will be hole-punched and valid only for the days that parking is allowed during that particular weekly period. For example, on Sunday, Monday, Friday, and Saturday of the week of September 22, KW/CCHM faculty and staff and evening culinary students will be allowed to park in the KW lot. However on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, there will be no employee parking (holes will not be punched).

• A hard copy list of “no parking” days will be given to all KW/CCHM faculty and staff and CCHM evening culinary students when picking up their weekly hang tag.

3. Weekly KW/CCHM staff/faculty parking hang tags will be issued to those CCHM HRT 383L-02/RKR culinary students working evenings, which will allow them to park in Lot L after 4:00 p.m. only. Those weekly hang tags will be hole-punched just the same as the KW/CCHM and will exclude parking on days/evenings that are designated “no parking.” CCHM HRT383L-02/RKR culinary student hang tags will be color-coded pink and marked accordingly to make it easier for Parking Services to monitor while patrolling Lot L.

4. Copies of the weekly KW/CCHM employee parking permit log sheets, from both KW and CCHM, will be e-mailed to Parking Services (and copied to all parties) by the end of the business day every Friday.

Page 9: Change in Meeting Location · Every year, a unique theme is chosen for the Hot Dog Caper and a logo is designed to complement that theme. The 31st annual Hot Dog Caper will encompass

9

5. A monthly “Kellogg West Business Activity Calendar & Lot L Parking” spreadsheet for the upcoming month will be e-mailed to CCHM and Parking Services during the last week of each calendar month. Updates, if and when needed, will be sent out accordingly and upon changes and/or additions to KW/CCHM business levels.

6. Arrangements for use of parking Lot M by KW/CCHM will be arranged in advance with Parking Services.

7. Shuttle service arrangements for parking overflow (Lot M) will be discussed and/or arranged ahead of time and on a case-by-case basis as needed. All parties will be advised.

In addition, KW is planning to add parking spaces (30-35) in the large grassy area located just to the right as you come up the hill to go into Lot L. KW hopes to make this into a temporary gravel parking area and then turn it into a permanent parking lot once the Collins expansion project is completed and Lot L is repaired and repaved.

Lastly, KW has been trying to create an “electronic/computer generated” parking permit that will eliminate guests from having to stop at the front drive, obtain a parking hang tag from the front desk, and then go park their car. With the help of Foundation marketing, a solution that’s just as easy as getting your boarding pass (so to speak) may be implemented in the near future.

Take a Look at Our Most Recent Winning Entry!

Stop by the Foundation building (Bldg. 55) to view our most recent winning entry for the Poly Trolley!

The Poly Trolley received first place in the National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) 2014 Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards earlier this year. Applicants had to send a comprehensive book filled with detailed descriptions, examples, and photographs of the unit and were required to address a number of topics, including the menu, facility design, merchandising, marketing, nutrition, and sustainability. Poly Trolley personnel and the Foundation marketing department worked on the 60-page project for nearly two months.

In addition to the Loyal E. Horton entry, you can also view some of the winning ribbons, trophies, and certificates the Foundation has received in recent years.

THANK YOU, FOUNDATION

Thank you to all the employees of Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc. for your continued effort, creative vision, and dedication. Because of your hard work, the Foundation has earned several awards highlighting our achievements and innovative undertakings. Congratulations, Bronco Channel Winners!

The Foundation participated in the summer orientation fair every Tuesday and Thursday from early July to late August. For nearly two months, the Foundation promoted the website BroncoChannel.com, a student-friendly website that highlights the Foundation’s services, to incoming freshmen and transfer students.

In order to draw traffic to the website, we conducted a Bronco Channel Giveaway; anyone who visited BroncoChannel.com and entered their basic information was automatically entered into a raffle. Prizes included an iPad Mini, GoPro camera, a $250 Bronco Gift Card, and Los Olivos lunch passes. Winners were selected at random shortly after orientation concluded.

Congratulations to Antonio Felipe (iPad Mini winner), Jasmine Schnackenberg ($250 gift card winner), Ileene Guillen (GoPro winner), and Melanie Guerrero (Los Olivos lunch pass winner)!!
