Whether it is a question of divisions in companies, teams in divisions or even individual in teams - there is potential competition among components and varying degrees of collaboration between them.

• To make sure that the key result are of each individual in the organization is in line with the overall vision, mission and objectives of the organization.

• Talk directly to the customers about their views about the products and services and the organization as a whole.

• Find out how the customers compare the organization with others, for example competitors or similar operations.

Estimate the opportunity cost of poor quality, e.g. the likely impact of customer dissatisfaction, marketing effectiveness and market share.

• Talk directly to frontline employees about the difficulties they encounter in performing their work.

• Spend a day doing the frontline job - serving the customers or producing the product.

• Estimate the internal cost of poor quality.

• Meet informally with respected peers in other organizations that are advanced in quality.

• Study the criteria used to judge quality awards and conduct a self assessment.

• Use some tools to map out a management process that needs improvement e.g. annual planning or budgeting cycle.

• Review the big picture and trends - existing business pressures, globalization, technology and so on. Ask “what makes us think we will survive”.

• Ask “Can we survive using strategies focused only on where we are going - our goals? Don’t we also need to have strategies for how we operate?”.

Estimate and quantify the likely consequences of doing nothing now. Develop a plan for dealing with the eventual consequences of doing nothing. This plan may be more costly and painful than a plan to begin change now.

• Invest in long term research and innovation

• Innovation opportunity must be in line with the strategic goals of the organization.

• The innovation must create real value for the customer and not just end up in creating a feature for which the customers are not willing to pay.
