It is a new start; an opportunity for a deeper, more intense relationship with the Lord. We begin this solemn season with worship this Wednesday (February 26th) by celebrating Noon Mass and 6:30 PM Mass. Ashes will be imposed at both these celebra- tions. Ashes will also be imposed from 1:00 - 5:30 PM by various members of our Staff. As Lent begins this year, daylight increases, the earth becomes green again and the flowers bloom once more. While these changes naturally begin to occur at this time of year - the bright light of faith also grows stronger as we follow Jesus through Galilee, down to Jerusalem, all the way to the Cross and beyond to the glory of the Resurrection. This period of forty days is a time of more immediate and intensive preparation on the part of those who will be baptized and/or received into our Catholic Church at Easter. We remember to keep these men and women in our prayers during this time as we journey with them and remember our own baptismal commitment. This is a time of preparation and a time to ask ourselves what brought us to Christ and the Church. Our catechumens and candidates have freely chosen the Church and are enthusiastic about participating in the life of the Church. By their example, may we be renewed in our own faith. Christ's Peace! NEXT WEEKEND:

Aid for the Church in Central/Eastern Europe The fall of communism in Central and Eastern Europe in 1989 gave the Catholic church the freedom to worship openly once again, but much of the infrastructure of the Church was gone. This created great challenges and still presents many complications for the Church today as she supports the spiritual lives of those who live in this region. Your support of the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe (CCEE) is strengthening the life of the Church and building the future for those who live there. Please use the donation envelope in today’s Chancellor in next weekend’s collection. Thank you in advance for your generosity. More information about the Collection for CCEE and the projects it support can be found at: www.usccb.org/ccee.

March 1, 2020 You are cordially invited to participate in

the first St. Thomas a’Becket Parishioner’s Small Business Expo next Sunday, March 1st. This event will allow parish members to showcase their businesses after all the Sunday Masses in the Family Life Center. There are 40 slots available. Registration, available at no cost, will be through EventBrite - open January 8th through TODAY, Feb. 23rd; the link is available on the parish website. You will be responsible for providing all needed materials for your vendor table. (No sales permitted.) If you have any questions, please email Joseph Nader at Joseph [email protected] or Anu George at [email protected].

Triduum Choir Rehearsals -

All Are Welcome! The Paschal Triduum is the heart of our liturgical year and celebrates the heart of our faith. For this reason, it features some of the most beautiful and profound music we sing all year long. We would like to extend an invitation to you to be a part of the Triduum Choir this year. Joining this group will provide you with a unique opportunity to enter deeply into the mysteries celebrated throughout Holy Week. During Lent, we are all called to give more of ourselves through acts of charity as well as in our prayer. St. Augustine tells us that when we sing we pray twice, so getting involved in the Triduum Choir is a perfect opportunity for you to immerse yourself in the Lenten experience. It is also worth mentioning that joining this group is an opportune way to see what music ministry at St. Thomas a’Becket is all about without making a commitment for the whole year. The choir will be meeting on Thursday evenings during Lent, so join us this Thursday, Feb. 27th, from 7:30-9:00 PM. Please, if you are even somewhat curious about what this experience might mean for you, call Kevin Ryan at (734) 981-1333, ext. 26, or email him at [email protected], or even better, come track him down after any weekend mass over by the piano! This might be just the thing that God is calling you take on for this Lent of 2020.

FASTING

The Law of Abstinence obliges those 14 years of age and older to not eat meat. The Law of Fast obliges all those from ages 18 through 59 to refrain their eating to one full meal and two lighter meals for the day. The other two meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each person’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Liquids are permitted between meals. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of both Fast and Abstinence. Also, in the United States, all Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (no meat).

Free Cholesterol Screening for

Heart Month

Parish Nurse Ministry and Kroger are offering a free cholesterol check for Heart Month. This is a small finger stick. Have your cholesterol total, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, and sugar screened. See immediate results. Screenings are available after the 8 or 10 AM masses on February 23rd. This is offered for adult men and women over the age of 18. You must be fasting since midnight (no food - water is okay). . Blood pressure screenings will also

be available for anyone who would like theirs checked.

BOTTLES (continued from page 1) signs up showing where to return them.) We ask that all bottles be returned by Palm Sunday weekend. If you take a bottle, return a bottle. All money collected will be used to help support the AAA Pregnancy Resource Center, located on Schoolcraft in Livonia. The Center is nearing 50 years of helping women who struggle with decisions of an unexpected pregnancy. The center is a non-denominational, non-Political Christian-based center dedicated to helping mothers and fathers facing tough decisions about the future. Members of the Knights of Columbus and the parish Pro-Life committee help and support this mission. Thank you in advance for all of your help and support. Members will be available to answer any questions you may have. Again, thank you.

“PEACEFUL PIECERS”

Snow is inevitable in Michigan winters. While this winter has been relatively mild, the winters are difficult for those whom we visit. A few weeks ago, there was a snowfall and the home visitors had to make a trip out after the storm had passed. Parking was not easy on the narrow street of the trailer park due to the snow piles. The client who was visited that evening had recently lost her husband. She had come to the realization that she had been very dependent on him. She had trouble with her car. It needed repairs, so that she could get to her job. It was an unexpected expense. She had no family to help her. While, her immediate need was assistance with repairs on her car, she also had little food in her house. The home visitors gave her a referral to the food bank. They offered a compassionate listening ear, which helped lift the woman’s spirits. With no one nearby, she had been lonely, and appreciated the Vincentians coming to her. Often it is not just the monetary help that we provide when we go out on a visit. It is the fact that we meet our clients where they are. It is the person to person contact, where we let them know that there are people who care. We strive to see the face of Christ in those who are suffering. The support of the parish family allows us to reach out to those in our community who need help.

St. Vincent de Paul, pray for us, our benefactors and those we serve.

Please remember we can only take NON-PERISHABLE food (nothing that needs refrigeration) in the wagons, and please check expiration dates

on the containers.

This weekend we welcome the following children into the Catholic Christian community:

CHRISTOPHER KENNETH OBUDZINSKI, child of Christopher and Anne (Kaczor) Obudzinski. Godparents are Christopher Russo and Neille Giffune.

ADELINE MARIE RIX, child of Robert and Victoria (McCombs) Rix. Godparents are Steven and Kari McCombs.

NOLAN MILLER SCHOPIERAY, child of Kevin and Jillian (Grey) Schopieray. Godparents are Brad and Kristen Schopieray.

GRACIE LAUREN WIECKOWSKI,

and CALLIE SOFIA WIECKOWSKI, children of Gary and Sandra (Elliott) Wieckowski. Godparents are Dion and Trina Kurzyniec.

CAYDEN LEE BLACKMON, child of Randy and Joseane (da Silva) Blackmon. Godparents are David and Marie Blackmon and Julio and Joice da Silva.

We pray for the parents and godparents, and for all who will be there to nurture their faith as they grow. Help them to realize that they belong to the Lord, and teach them what it means.

The Sacraments –

Anointing of the Sick In Scripture, disease was seen as the result of sin – if you are sick you must have done something wrong! Healing happened when the afflicted person was reconciled with the Lord. In the New Testa-ment Jesus demonstrates His great compassion toward the sick by the miraculous healings he performs, which heal the entire person, both body and soul. The Scriptural foundation of the Sacrament is in the Letter of James: “Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters (priests) of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint (him) with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. (James 5:14-15)” The sacrament is given to those who are seriously ill (e.g., requiring a visit to the hospital) and may be given multiple times. It is most properly given at the onset of an illness (while there is hope of recovery!) and can be given to the aged, even if there is no particular illness. This differs from the pre-Vatican II understanding of “extreme unction” - the final anointing given at the point of death. We now understand that the sacramental proper to the dying is “holy viaticum” the reception of consecrated host (bread for the journey home). The Anointing of the Sick is performed by a priest which gives the one who is ill the opportunity to confess their sins and receive absolution. The priest lays hands on the one who is ill, anoints them with the blessed Oil of the Sick and recites the words of blessing: “By this holy anointing . . . may the Lord who frees you from sin save you and rise you up.” Anointing will always bring spiritual healing – if the person receiving it has the proper disposition. It may also include physical healing, if this is God’s will. Our sufferings unite us with the sufferings of Jesus and take on meaning when joined to those of Christ. Christ sanctifies our suffering and makes it a source of grace for us. If you have questions, or would just like to chat, send me an e-mail: [email protected].

God bless! Deacon Jim

Everyone is welcome. Prayer Intention May Catholic parish communities strive to provide compassionate, tangible support to expectant moms needing assistance. Reflection In Evangelium vitae (The Gospel of Life), Pope John Paul II applauds the daily heroism of mothers who selflessly devote themselves to their children. This modern-day saint also highlights the unfortunate reality that “these heroic women do not always find support in the world around them.” He goes on to say, “On the contrary, the cultural models frequently promoted and broadcast by the media do not encourage motherhood. In the name of progress and modernity the values of fidelity, chastity, sacrifice, to which a host of Christian wives and mothers have borne and continue to bear outstanding witness, are presented as obsolete.” (EV 86) A culture that fails to truly value motherhood naturally becomes hostile to the gift of new life. When the Church compassionately serves mothers, it witnesses to the beauty of human life. There is a great need for real, tangible assistance for expectant mothers. Christ calls us to serve those most alone and in need. In a world that often turns its back on mothers who sacrifice so much of themselves, may we, the Church’s members, rise to help mothers in need of assistance and support. Next month the Church celebrates the 25th anniversary of Evangelium vitae. In honor of this special anniversary year, a nationwide initiative is launching that is dedicated to serving pregnant women in need called Walking with Moms in Need: A Year of Service. You are essential to the success of this effort.
