Nano is small, and how small? It is one billionth of a meter. A human hair is 100,000 nanometers thick. That is how small nano is. And what is so special about a nano particle? Its surface area. Smaller size means larger surface area, leading to a billion times more atoms and molecules on the surface, for the same volume. This aspect of a nano particle leads to myriad applications in all futuristic materials used in all walks of life. A top down or bottom up approach could be adopted towards nanotechnology. Huge areas of applications are – Integrated circuits in computing, waste

management, mechanical heat transfer, space, aerodynamics, sensors, coolants, lubricants, sustainable energy as in photo-voltaic cells, in medicine and pharma as in water insoluble drugs for cancer, electronics, textiles, wearables like jackets, shoes, household items, sports gear and so on…

Nano-Technology will change the nature of almost every human-made object in the coming years, concluded Prof. Krishnamurthy.

Home guardMs. Shivaranjani honoured

A familiar name in Mysore over the last week, Ms. Shivaranjani, a home guard in charge of traffic at Ramaswamy circle, was honoured by Rotary Mysore for her selfless service in returning a bag with Rs 5 lakhs to its rightful owner. Congrats Ms. Shivaranjani! May her tribe increase!

As already reported, PP Sathish Kumar recently celebrated a new addition into his life. Here he is, beaming with joy!

Visually impaired Shivananjiah, a final year BA student at Maharaja's College, needed Rs 2000/- for his text books. And Rotary Mysore promptly came up with the desired amount. And Shivananjiah happily responded with a D.R.Bendre' composition in his melodious voice.

Dr. B.R. Pai thankedRotary Mysore thanked Rtn. B.R.Pai for his contribution of Rs. 37,500 towards Taare Zameen Par.

For Regenerative Therapy ofMaster Skanda

Those who followed all the events presented at the recently concluded Taare' Zameen Par could not have missed Master Skanda, one of the livewire performers there. He has a history of delayed milestones and needed Rs. 35,000 for regenerative therapy. So when Skanda came with his mother to the Rotary Center last Thursday, our Rotarians promptly responded on the spot and in a matter of minutes collected and donated the said amount (including Rs 5000/- from Rotary Mysore). This is what Rotary stands for, we reminded ourselves.

The Zonal Level Pre PETS & SETS seminar for incoming Presidents and Secretaries of our Zone was held at Rotary Center last Saturday. Rtn. M. Lakshminarayan was the Chief Guest and had words of sound advice to the prospective club leaders. Earlier, he had lighted the lamp along with AG Rtn. Bheemesh who too addressed the gathering along with our host President Rtn. M.C.S.Manohara. The 3 Zonal Lieutenants including our own PP Rtn. Anantharaj Urs were present. Rotary

In a passionate plea on RTI, Dr. R. Balasubramaniam called upon people to gain awareness on the Right to Information Act. He was speaking at a Zone 7 joint Rotary RTI awareness meeting hosted by Midtown at the Rotary High School auditorium this Sunday. We need to use its provisions effectively, and also need to bring pressure not to dilute it further, he said. He suggested that we organize more such awareness programs for the general public.

DG Rtn. S. Gururaj, Dist RTI Chairman Rtn. B. Pundalika Marathe, Asst Governor Dr. M.N.Bheemesh and a number of Rotarians were among the interested audience. Retired Principal Satyanarayana Rashinkar and a farmer from Piriyapatna, Shivanna, were felicitated on the occasion.

PRE PETS and SETS hostedPRE PETS and SETS hostedMysore's incoming President and Secretary too were active participants. Rtn. Nandakumar shared his vast experience on Club Assembly and Meetings , Board meetings , GoV protocols, Membership Development, family meets, TRF and Future Vision Plan. Past AG Joseph Mathew spoke on club finance, budget preparation, reporting and awards. The highlight of the seminar was the inimitable Rtn. M.S.Raghu with his motivational and

team building workshop. He literally stole the show and empowered us all for the tasks ahead. The program was organized by incoming AG Rtn. Jayaprakash of Central Mysore. Rotary Mysore hosted the event and provided breakfast and lunch to al l the participants from the 12 clubs of our Zone.

Our Rotarians have over the last few weeks become health conscious and have started regular weekend walks at Kukkarahalli. This Sunday was special with a rather early Holi celebration ending with coffee at Ramyaa's.

Rtn. Santosh has opened Lobo’s, a new restaurant and lodge near Infosys. Way to go, Santosh, congrats!

ndWorld Water Day 22 MarchWater and energy are closely interlinked and interdependent. Energy generation and transmission requires utilization of water resources, particularly for hydroelectric, nuclear, and thermal energy sources. Conversely, about 8% of the global energy generation is used for pumping, treating and transporting water to various consumers.

In 2014, the UN System – working closely with its Member States and other relevant stakeholders – is collectively bringing its attention to the water-energy nexus, particularly addressing inequities, especially for the 'bottom billion' who live in slums and impoverished rural areas and survive without access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation, sufficient food and energy services. It also aims to facilitate the development of policies and crosscutting frameworks that bridge ministries and sectors, leading the way to energy security and sustainable water use in a green economy. Particular attention will be paid to identifying best practices that can make a water- and energy-efficient 'Green Industry' a reality.

Objectives of World Water Day in 2014• Raise awareness of the inter-linkages between water and energy• Contribute to a policy dialogue that focuses on the broad range of issues related to the nexus of water

and energy• Demonstrate, through case studies, to decision makers in the energy sector and the water domain that

integrated approaches and solutions to water-energy issues can achieve greater economic and social impacts

• Identify policy formulation and capacity development issues in which the UN system, in particular UN-Water and UN-Energy, can offer significant contributions

• Identify key stakeholders in the water-energy nexus and actively engaging them in further developing the water-energy linkages

• Contribute as relevant to the post-2015 discussions in relation to the water-energy nexus.

Greetings! It is a matter of great pride and satisfaction for every Rotarian in India that together we were able to sustain three years without a single reported case of Polio. This achievement as you may know was celebrated on 11th February 2014 at New Delhi at a function organised by the Health Ministry at the Talkatora Stadium. The South East Asia Region (SEAR) comprising of 11 nations of which India is one will now be certified POLIO FREE by the World Health Organisation (W.H.O.) on 27th March 2014. To commemorate this significant milestone in Rotary's effort of Global Polio Eradication a POLIO FREE CONCLAVE 2014 has been planned at Vigyan Bhawan New Delhi on 29th & 30th March 2014 for which the Honourable President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee has very kindly agreed to be the Chief Guest on 29th March 2014. You along with several other Rotarians have been a part of this herculean effort in making India Polio Free and would surely wish to be a part of this historic event. I encourage you to register and join your fellow Rotarians in this celebration. I do hope that you will plan to be in Delhi and look forward to seeing you there.Warm and sincere regards.

Father figure

There were three fathers to be in a hospital waiting room, waiting for their babies to be born.

The first nurse comes out and tells the first father, "Congratulations you're the father of twins!"

He says, “Great! I am the manager for the Minnesota Twins.”

The second nurse comes out and tells the second father, "Congratulations you're the father of triplets!”

He says, "That's cool! I work for 3M.”

The third father runs screaming out the front door.

The third nurse comes out, and asks, “Where's the third father?"

One of the other fathers said, "Oh he just ran out the door.”

The nurse asks, "Why?"

He replied, "He works for 7-Up!”
