NRMA INSURANCE WESTERN SydNEy WANdERERS COACH TONy POPOVIC SAyS HIS TEAM CAN TAKE ENORMOUS CONFIdENCE FROM THE FACT THEy HAVE ALREAdy BEATEN TOdAy’S OPPONENT – BRISBANE ROAR – ON THE ROAd THIS SEASON.

And now the Wanderers get the chance to meet the winners of last season’s championship on home soil, at Parramatta Stadium.

It was back in round four, on October 27, when Mark Bridge scored off a cross from Youssouf Hersi in the 19th minute to give the Wanderers a 1-0 win at Suncorp Stadium - and a slice of history in the process.

It was the first goal by the team in the A-League, providing them with their first win in the process, and Popovic fondly remembers it as a great

day for the competition’s newest club. He said that although the Roar have had their ups and downs this season they were still a very dangerous side.

“They still have outstanding players and still play some great football,” Popovic said. “Regardless of how they might be playing on the day as a team, any one of those players can suddenly do something that wins them the game.

“They have shown a number of times in recent years that they have got this ability to get out of trouble with their skill, even when they might have looked gone as a team, and we will have to be on our game for the full 90 minutes to counter that.

“We have enormous respect for the Brisbane club, and the

football they play, and we expect this to be a very tough game.”

It isn’t the sort of omen the Wanderers would have been looking for, but just as they were when they played Brisbane the first time they are coming off two straight losses going into this game.

The Wanderers began the season with a 0-0 draw at home against Central Coast Mariners, and followed that up with a 1-0 loss to Adelaide United away and a 1-0 loss to Sydney FC

at home. They were very competitive in those losses, but were left badly needing points against the Roar.

Again now, the Wanderers are aiming to get back on track after losing 2-0 to Melbourne Victory at home and 1-0 to Wellington Phoenix away in their last two games – and there is good reason for fans to be optimistic that will happen.

The Wanderers created plenty of chances in both of those games, but just couldn’t put them away, and they also had two very good calls for penalties denied in the loss to the Phoenix. If they keep pushing, the goals will surely come.

SINCE yOU WERE LAST HERE

ROUNd 8 VS MELBOURNE VICTORy AT PARRAMATTA STAdIUM

The Victory were reduced to 10 men in just the 16th minute when Sam Gallagher was given his marching orders for dragging down striker Dino Kresinger on the edge of the penalty box.

Midfielders Shinji Ono flicked a clever ball in behind for Kresinger who won the race to the ball when Gallagher appeared to trip over his own feet after some initial contact from the Wanderers striker.

A desperate Gallagher made contact with the Wanderers striker on the edge of the penalty box and referee Ben Williams immediately produced a red card.

Ono narrowly missed the ensuing free-kick as the NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers started to dominate the undermanned Melbourne side.

Shinji Ono’s audacious shot from halfway in the third minute was as close as either side came to an early goal in an even start to the encounter.

Ono again came within centimetres of scoring the opener with a free-kick late in the half before disaster struck for the hosts in the shadows of half-time.

Despite spending the rest of the opening stanza on the back foot the visitors hit the front in the 44th minute via an own goal from Michael Beauchamp.

Ange Postecoglou’s men struck again on the hour when Archie Thompson scored on the counter attack to double the advantage.

The Wanderers peppered the visitors’ goal in the final half hour but couldn’t breach the Victory defence and suffered their second straight loss at home.

ROUNd 9 VS WELLINGTON PHOENIX AT WESTPAC STAdIUM

A brave NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers FC team went

down to Wellington Phoenix FC at Westpac Stadium.

A cross by fullback Jerome Polenz in the 16th minute clearly struck Phoenix defender Andrew Durante low on the arm as he turned his back inside the penalty box, sparking a united appeal from the Wanderers players.

To the amazement of everyone at Westpac Stadium referee Matthew Gillett played the resulting corner and did call Durante’s obvious foul. The corner was taken by midfielder Shinji Ono and eventually defused.

After several more raids down the left, Brockie sent an innocuous cross in the 21st minute that drifted into the wind across Ante Covic’s goal mouth.

After initially misjudging the flight in the wind, Covic slipped when trying to change direction and was left prone and red-faced as the ball floated in slow motion into the net on his near side.

Four minutes after replacing Dino Kresinger in the 58th minute, young striker Joey Gibbs was brought down heavily in the box by Ben Sigmund but the referee was again not interested.

Muscat was finally given a yellow card for a professional foul in the 81st minute, the only card given all match.

In an opportunity that summed up the Wanderers’ day, Gibbs received the ball 4m out in the 90th minute only for his blistering shot to cannon into the back of a Wellington player point blank in front of goal.

NRMA INSURANCE WESTERN SydNEy WANdERERS STAR yOUSSOUF HERSI SAyS HE IS dETERMINEd TO MAKE UP FOR LEAVING THE TEAM SHORT-HANdEd WHEN HE RETURNS FROM SUSPENSION AGAINST BRISBANE ROAR TOdAy.

Hersi has missed the last two games for the Wanderers – both of which were losses, against Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix – after receiving a two-match suspension for retaliation in the 1-0 win over Perth Glory.

The vastly experienced Dutchman with the ability to run all day concedes that while he was angry over being heavily tackled, resulting in his lashing out, it was the wrong thing to do.

“I wish I hadn’t done it, because I haven’t been able to help my team for the last two weeks,” Hersi said. “I could only watch.”

And being forced to watch, when you’re fit and well and would be out there under normal circumstances, isn’t easy, as Hersi found out.

“I was at the home game against the Victory to support my team,” he said. “But it was very difficult to watch, and not be able to go out there and help. It

was frustrating. And when the team went to Wellington for the game against the Phoenix, I couldn’t watch it on TV.

“I went outside and kept checking the score on the internet. It’s too hard to watch when you know you should be out there playing, and you want to play your part for the team.”

Hersi has already had a good experience against the Roar this season. It was his cross that set up the goal for Mark Bridge in their round-four encounter, at Suncorp Stadium. It was the first goal for the Wanderers in the Hyundai A-League, and the only goal of the match.

But while that will give Hersi great heart going into this game, he is well aware of how dangerous Brisbane are.

“I’m back available again this week, but it’s up to the coach to decide where to put me,” Hersi said. “I’ll be ready for Brisbane, because I know they’re a very good team, a very strong team. You have to be well prepared to play them.

“This is a league in which every team is capable of beating any other team. That’s great for the league, because it makes it a strong competition.”

Hersi has quickly become a favourite with Wanderers fans, not only because of his skill and high work rate but also because he loves

interacting with the crowd.“The supporters are there for you all the

time, so I try to give them something a bit different,” he said. “They like to see some skill, and they appreciate it when you celebrate with them after the team scores. I just try to give them something back.”

Jerome first heard about the Hyundai A-League when he watched a documentary on fellow German Thomas Broich’s exploits since arriving in Australia a few years ago.

The Germany Under 20 representative thought Australia looked like a great place to play football and he has not regretted his move. He loves the culture at the Hyundai A-League’s newest club.

His flashing runs down the right hand side created mayhem for Wellington Phoenix. When one of his crosses careered into Andrew Durante’s hand, the Wanderers should have had a penalty and a lead. The Berlin-born defender is quick and strong and uses his height in the air.

Jerome will today be focussing on shutting down country-man Broich and live wire striker Besart Berisha. He knows it will a tough day at the office but he didn’t come all this way to shirk a challenge.

Age 31 Height 182cm Weight 72kgSenior Clubs SpVgg Unterhaching, Wacker Burghausen, Borussia Moenchengladbach, Koln (All Germany)

He is nicknamed “Mozart”; not only for his interest in classical music but for the smooth and silky way has he glided around the field distributing the ball. Considered by some as the best player to play in the Hyundai A-League - for certain he is the best German to play regular club football here.

Thomas Broich was largely responsible for the Premier’s success in winning the Championship two years in a row under coach Ange Postecoglou and he was the conductor when the Roar set the longest winning streak in Australian sport. His influence over his Roar teammates is so strong that they often struggle to win when he is out.

This season Broich and the Roar have shown only glimpses of the form of previous years under the management of Rado Vidosic. Broich has a history of falling out with coaches – that is how he came to play in Australia after being considered by many in his homeland as the next great national playmaker.

If Brisbane and Broich don’t find their best form soon there could be troubled times ahead. That makes him very dangerous tonight.

ROUNd 6 VS NEWCASTLE JETS AT CAMPBELLTOWN STAdIUM

NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers increased their unbeaten streak in the Westfield W-League to four matches with an impressive 3-0 win over the Newcastle Jets in sweltering conditions at Campbelltown Sports Ground on Sunday November 25.

In a dominant display by the home side, skipper Sarah Walsh led the way - scoring a goal in each half before substitute Candace Sciberras put the icing on the cake with a strike right at the death.

The victory came without stars Servat Uzunlar and Teigan Allen on international duty.

With the temperature hitting 40 degrees in Sydney’s west, it was a scrappy start from both sides as they struggled with the intense heat and bumpy surface at Campbelltown.

But the first bit of quality from the Wanderers captain led to the opening goal.

Walsh was given too much time to receive the ball and turn at the Jets defence before unleashing a stinging shot past Eliza Campbell in the visitors’ goal.

The home side doubled the lead nine minutes after the break via a wonderful team goal.

Catherine Cannuli and Rachael Soutar combined brilliantly before the latter released Louise Fors.

The hard-working midfielder took a touch before picking out Walsh with a pin-point cross, with the former Matildas

striker heading home from close range.Even when Walsh was substituted

out of the game 15 minutes from time the home side didn’t lose their impetus, with Alisha Bass going close on a couple of occasions.

Sciberras ensured there would still be time for a third goal when she volleyed home the rebound after Campbell had initially saved Trudy Camilleri’s shot.

ROUNd 7 VS PERTH GLORy FC AT INTIGA STAdIUM, PERTH

Perth Glory moved to the top of the Westfield W-League standings with a clinical 3-0 win over the NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers at Intiga Stadium on Saturday December 1.

Marianna Tabain opened the scoring in the 18th minute with an attempted cross that found the back of the net after Kate Gill’s efforts to get on the end of it hindered Wanderers’ goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir from reaching the ball.

The lead was doubled just eight minutes later when Collette McCallum played through Rosie Sutton, whose assist was tapped in by Gill from three metres.

McCallum added some polish for Perth in the 60th minute when she curled a 25-yard free kick into the top right-hand corner of the Western Sydney goal.

Gill, though, was guilty of squandering a number of opportunities to score and put the game to bed before half-time.

An Aivi Luik strike from the edge of the 18-yard box also grazed the outside of the Wanderers goal just before the break as Perth continued to push for a third goal.

Western Sydney only recorded three shots for the first half with just one of those on target.

Louise Thor’s shot from the edge of the 18-yard box on the stroke of half-time was the one on target, but her strike was straight at Perth goalkeeper Carly Telford.

Perth appeared to take their foot off the pedal late in the first half and early in the second, which allowed Western Sydney to work their way into their match.

VOLUNTEER OF THE WEEK

Meet Vanessa Carrett, our Ball Person Coordinator. Vanessa’s role of every match involves finding the Ball Person volunteers and organising their schedule for the season. Before each match Vanessa will email and text every volunteer to ensure they are still available for the upcoming home match.

Western Sydney Wanderers FC is not the only community volunteer work Vanessa does. Vanessa (aka Pendo Princess) is a Vice President of Pendle Hill Football Club. Recently at the 2012 AGM she became a Life Member for her contribution as a coach, manager and committee member. She has held various positions over her 8 years of service, including Canteen Manager and Social Organiser.

In 2012 Pendle Hill FC was involved in a big fundraiser for Pink Ribbon. Vanessa was heavily involved in organising a fundraising weekend, which was very successful, the club raised over $10,000. Vanessa also helped out Pink Ribbon raising $1,500 by cooking four dozen cupcakes each week. There was no set price just a donation of anything the person was prepared to pay for a cupcake.

ROUNd 6 VS AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF SPORT AT CAMPBELLTOWN STAdIUM

An injury time goal to Daniel Barac broke AIS hearts and gave the NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers a come-from-behind 2-1 win at Campbelltown Stadium on Sunday November 25.

The AIS looked on course for their first points of the campaign when Joshua Barresi’s blistering volley gave them a well-deserved 1-0 lead at the break.

But the Wanderers refused to go away and equalised through Kwabena Appiah-Kubi with just 12 minutes left before Paric prodded home the winner at the death.

Barac, who was a second half substitute, was on hand to finish off after good lead-up work from Zakeriya Elrich.

It was a cruel blow for Tony Vidmar’s young AIS side who were more than competitive for long periods of the match.

But it was a vital three points for the Wanderers who have kept themselves in touch with the leading sides after grounding out their second win of the season.

Wanderers striker Mark Cindric went close to opening the scoring midway through the half with a stinging shot that went narrowly wide, it was no surprise when the AIS went in front

on 26 minutes through Barresi.Disappointed at his side’s first

half showing, Wanderers coach Trevor Morgan made a triple change at the break and they immediately looked more threatening.

One of those substitutes Nicholas Olsen should have done better with his chance seven minutes after the resumption but he fired his volley high and wide.

ROUNd 7 VS CENTRAL COAST MARINERS AT CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE, TUGGERAH

Central Coast Mariners Youth recorded a comfortable 3-0 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers Youth in Tuggerah on Sunday December 2 to regain top spot on the NYL table.

First-half goals from Central Coast’s Hyundai A-League squad members Adam Kwasnik and Adriano Pellegrino, combined with Patrick Dixon’s late left-foot stunner, earned John McLafferty’s team their sixth win of the campaign.

A tight defensive display by the junior yellow and navy ensured the baby Wanderers were restricted to only a few decent goal-scoring opportunities throughout the Round 7 contest.

However, the game may have ended differently had former Newcastle Jets man Tarek Elrich converted his one-on-one opportunity against Mariners custodian David Bradasevic early on.

Only seven minutes later Central Coast took the lead. After Nikola Stanojevic’s shot was blocked away for a corner, Pellegrino swung in an accurate set piece where Kwasnik leapt highest, guiding his header into the back of the net.

Having made the assist for the opening goal, Pellegrino was in the thick of the action again just eight minutes later.

This time, he received the ball outside the box before unleashing a powerful right foot drive, with Wanderers custodian Thomas Manos unable to get enough contact on the ball to prevent McLafferty’s boys from extending their lead.

With just four minutes of regular time remaining, Dixon unleashed a left-foot drive from the edge of the area that left Western Sydney’s substitute stopper Aaron Lidell with no chance.

Kwabena Appiah-Kubi had an opportunity to reduce the deficit late but failed to guide the ball past the big frame of Bradasevic.

At 89, John Teuben member number 5,187, is one of the oldest Members of Western Sydney Wanderers FC.

After his son, Eric, took him to the Sydney Derby on 20 October, John was interested in going to more of the home matches. Although never being a member of a football club before and because of how close he lives to Parramatta Stadium, John decided to become a member.

He loves his hat and season pass, and has so far attended three home matches. John was very excited when the Wanderers defeated Perth 1-0 at nib Stadium calling his son to let him know his team had won.
