"Rhinebeck Reads March in October":
Starr Library Plans a Town-Wide Reading Program
What's a great way to bring our community closer and get people talking to each other about meaningful top-
ics? Host a town-wide reading program! It works like this: get as many people as possible to read the same
book and then have a number of programs, exhibits and book discussion sessions to talk about different
themes from the book.
In an ongoing celebration of Starr Library's 150th anniversary, the Library has selected the compelling, beauti-
fully crafted novel March by Geraldine Brooks. This Pulitzer Prize winning story is set during the Civil War
(not coincidentally 150 years ago) and is told mostly from the perspective of the fictional character Mr.
March, the father from Louisa May Alcott's beloved classic Little Women. Through his letters home and first-
person flashbacks, the reader travels along with March during his harrowing experiences and deep questioning
of his faith as an abolitionist Union chaplain who has gone to war in the South.
Oblong Books is partnering with Starr Library to promote "Rhinebeck Reads March in October", and the book
will be available for purchase at numerous merchants throughout town. We will also be encouraging commu-
nity members to share copies and sign the inside of their book so others can see where the book has been!
Questions may be directed to Nan Jackson, Rhinebeck Reads Coordinator ( [email protected] ),
or to Starr Library Director Steven Cook at 845-876-4030 ([email protected]).

DUTCHESS COUNTY FAIR NEWS
NEW ENTRANCE AND EXIT GATES AT 2012 COUNTY FAIR
Andy Imperati, Dutchess County Fair’s Operations Manager, has announced a change in the Entrance
and Exit traffic plan for the 2012 Fair. The previous entrance on Route 9 is now the South Gate and is
for exiting traffic only. The North Gate (formerly an exit gate) is the Main Entrance gate to the Fair from
both directions on Rte 9.
“This parking plan has been implemented twice already at both the Car Show in May and the
Motorcycle Club of America Show in June” said Imperati. “It has worked successfully to prevent
bottlenecking on Rte 9 and more importantly, to increase the safety of pedestrians inside the fairgrounds
gates”.
The New York State Police, Dutchess County Sheriff’s Department, Village of Rhinebeck Police,
Accurate Parking of Florida and Fairgrounds Board Members and employees have all contributed their
expertise in making this decision. Video Message Signs along Rte 9 will assist in directing the traffic
flow, as well as numerous static signs strategically placed.
Additionally, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is providing a radio sta-
tion to help disseminate traffic pattern information. Again, video signs are used to give the call letters of
the radio station and more static signs inside the gates assist in directing fairgoers to updates.
There are more traffic changes occurring at the Fairgrounds Parsonage St. Gate. The Village of Rhine-
beck has amended its’ 3 ton weight limit vehicle and traffic law to allow livestock trucks and trailers to
enter and exit the Dutchess County Fair at the Parsonage Street Gate from Monday, August 20 until
Sunday, August 26. This amendment is good for these dates only.
DUTCHESS COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS AT COUNTY FAIR
The Dutchess County Board of Elections is coming to the fair! And, they are bringing the new voting
machines! This presents a great opportunity for fairgoers to become comfortable with the process of voting with
the new machines before they are introduced at their local polling place in November.
Each day of the fair (August 21-26) the DC Board of Elections booth will have a ‘Dutchess County Fair Elec-
tion’ using the new machine. There are 5 questions:
1. What is Your Favorite Farm Animal? -Cow, Sheep, Horse or Pig.
2. What is Your Favorite Display? - Antique Museum, Salute to Agriculture, Wool Room or Milking Parlor.
3. What other Fairgrounds events do you attend? - Car Show, Crafts Fair, Motorcycle Show or Sheep and Wool.
4. What is your favorite Fair dessert? - Milkshake, Deep-Fried Oreos, Cotton Candy or Fried Dough
5. Learn how do use a Write-In Ballot by answering- What County Do you live in?
The previous days’ election results will be posted every morning and the booth is staffed 10am to 10pm with
Board of Election Members ready to assist fairgoers (voters) in using the new machine. They are there to answer
your questions and ease the process of facing a new voting machine in the fall.
