Working with the United States State Department and the Interna-tional Center of Syracuse, the FAYETTEVILLE FREE LIBRARY (FFL) had the honor of hosting visitors from five libraries from the country of Belarus. The Belarus Libraries visited the FFL to learn about innovation and leadership through community engagement. The visit included tours of the FFL Fab Lab and makerspaces along with an hour of sharing strategies with FFL Executive Director, Sue Considine.

In 2011, the Fayetteville Free Library was the first public library in the country to add a makerspace (The Atlantic March 11, 2016). A makerspace is a public area designed to provide the community with the tools and equipment that is not readily available to individuals. Since 2011 countless libraries throughout the world have looked to the FFL for leadership and advice as they work to iterate and innovate in their own communities. The FFL offers weekly innovation tours for individuals and organizations from diverse industries to share innovation and community engagement strategies. To schedule an innovation tour contact Sue Con-sidine at [email protected] and visit the FFL website at www.fflib.org/make.

September 2016

Community Calendar

On September 9th, 2016 David’s Refuge will host the third annual Taste of David’s Refuge fundraising event at the beautiful Beak & Skiff 1911 Café and Tasting Room from 7-10pm. It will be an evening of celebration. David’s Refuge began five years ago serving just over 40 couples. Now, the organization has grown to serve over 154 respite weekends in 2016 and will open the 2017 calendar to serve 250 weekends at over 18 Bed and Breakfast locations and multiple volunteers and sponsors. The community has gathered together to support this incredible outreach. Todd Luchsinger, Executive VP & CFO at Dupli Envelopes and Graphics and his wife Kadi, Executive Director of Dup15q Alliance are the Honorary Chairs and have a personal connection to David’s Ref-uge. They write, “We are grateful for our time at David’s Refuge where we experienced time to rest, rejuvenate, talk uninterrupted and meet other wonderful couples who are sharing this journey.” Food and drink are being provided by Beak & Skiff, Sherwood Inn, Brae Loch, Carrabba’s, Empire Brewery, Gannon’s Ice Cream, Murphy’s Specialized Pastry, and Maines. It will be an evening not to miss. Skip Clark, program director of 92.1 The WOLF- Syracuse’s New Hit Country will emcee the event. Twelve destination baskets will be silently auctioned, and a private Gourmet Dinner prepared by the Chef de Cuisine at The Brewster Inn is sure to create a lively bidding war! David’s Refuge was started by Warren and Brenda Pfohl in honor of their son David who passed away five years ago after a thirteen year battle with Battens Disease. Their mission is too simply “Care of the Caregiver.” As these amazing parents are given an opportunity to care for themselves they are better prepared to continue caring for and loving their children. When our parents return from their time of respite they are reminded they are not alone, what they do matters, and that they are loved by God.
