Ron Hallenbeck retired at the close of April after twelve years of service as Executive

Vice President of the Ames Economic Development Commission (AEDC). Ron came to join the Ames Cham-ber of Commerce and AEDC after a distinguished career with Sears and IBM. He and his wife Pam relocated to Ames to be close to their alma ma-ter, Iowa State University.

During his tenure with the AEDC, he led the organizations’ Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) ef-forts and managed a number of proj-ects that will have lasting impact on the Ames/Story County economy. He played a major role in a number of local company expansions, including Ag Leader Technology, Xpanxion, and most recently was the key driver on the AEDC team for the major ex-pansion of Barilla’s $65 million ex-pansion that was recently completed.

In addition to these and other proj-ects he also provided considerable

insight for program-ming across the or-ganizations and was a key insider to strat-egy development and confidant to Ames Chamber President & CEO, Dan Culhane. “Ron came to me and said retirement was good but that he was looking for something to do. I hired him and my expectation was that he would help around the office. What I got was a key leader that had an incredible passion for community. The team and I will miss him but he has earned the right to step back and enjoy his second re-tirement.”

Hallenbeck drew upon consider-able past professional experience to help the Chamber and its affiliates grow since joining the organization

in 2007. He was highly instrumental in the imple-mentation of the Workforce Solutions pro-gram, which came out of the feedback

he took from local companies through the BRE program. Today, the Workforce program now has two team members per-forming meaningful and significant work-force programming.

The work Ron will most be remembered for, however, is his leadership with the Ames Seed Capital, LLC. His passion for detail and wanting what was best for the

fund and the business is why he was so successful in leading this impor-tant program. He was a key part of the fundraising for Fund VI and Fund VII during his time with the organi-zation. Fund VII raised a whopping $4.25 million to be in-vested in local compa-nies!

“Ron served as a tre-mendous ambassador in promoting the good work of Ames Seed Capital and as a result we saw a major increase in the number of inves-tors and overall growth in the sophistication of the process for making

good investment decisions,” says Culhane.

Hallenbeck plans to remain in the Ames community as he is actively involved in a number of community organizations, including the Iowa State University Foundation Board of Governors and the Mary Greeley Medical Center Foundation. He and Pam will also continue to cheer on all of the Cyclones athletic programs where they are known to be two ar-dent supporters.

“In twelve short years Ron made a lasting and important imprint on community and economic develop-ment here in Ames/Story County, and for that we are all very grateful,” says Culhane.

Dates for the 2019 See Yourself in Ames summer intern event series have been announced. This series of events is part of the Ames Chamber of Commerce

and Economic Development Commission’s Workforce Solutions program.

This series of events are open to interns, recent college graduates and young professionals who are in the Story County area this summer. The goal of this series is to help connect young adults in the business community while providing opportunities for them to get involved in Ames beyond their internship or classroom.

The first event, Enjoy Ames, will be held on Thursday, May 30 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Reiman Gardens. Interns are invited to attend the first-ever FUEL Fest (an event hosted by FUEL of Story County, an affiliate organization of the Ames Chamber of Commerce) for a night of live music, food, drink carts and free admission to the gardens. This event will also feature a panel of current FUEL Story County members.

The second event, Raise Ames, will be held on Tuesday, June 18 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the Sukup Basketball Complex. During this event, interns will hear from ISU Athletics Director Jamie Pollard about overcoming adversity and facing challenges head-on.

The third event, Lead Ames, will be held on Tuesday, July 16 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Prairie Moon Winery. This event will encourage attendees to bring their whole selves to work and encourage others to do the same.

The final event of the series, Grow Ames, will be held Wednesday, July 31 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Campus Cycle. Interns will hear from local business owners on the importance of civic responsibility and how volunteering is vital to the health and growth of the community.

Attention Story County employers and job seekers! Mark your calendars for these 2019 Story County career fair dates. Io-waWORKS Central Iowa will be holding a career fair on

June 5 at the Ames Public Library from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.More than 20 top employers representing a wide variety of indus-

tries will be available to meet with job seekers to discuss current job openings in fields such as maufacturing, health care, education, and finance.

Job seekers should bring copies of their resume and be prepared to meet a future employer. Prior to attending the career fair, job seekers interested in receiving free resume and interviewing help should con-tact the IowaWORKS office at 515-725-3611. The office is located at 430 E. Grand Ave in Des Moines.

AMES SEED CAPITAL

The Ames Seed Capital held its Annual Meeting and Luncheon on April 23. For the fourth year in a row, attendance to this event reached maximum capacity with over 400 attendees. Those in atten-

dance included Ames Seed Capital members, Iowa State senior administra-tion, and a number of individuals from both Iowa and the greater Midwest.

The Annual Meeting included a review of 2018 accomplishments, speak-ers from two companies that the ASC invested in the year prior (Geminii Health and Farmland Finder), recognized ASC members, and heard remarks from the three regent university presidents, Mark Nook from University of Northern Iowa, Bruce Harreld from University of Iowa, and Wendy Winter-steen from Iowa State University.

The three presidents spoke on how their universities collaborate with communities and entrepreneurs to add value to Iowa and looked forward to the future on how to continuously cultivate these relationships.

In addition to the Annual Meeting and Luncheon, an Entrepreneur Show-case and the Startup Ames Pitch Competition also took place. Nine entre-preneurs ready for capital investment presented their ideas to investors dur-ing the showcase. Eleven entrepreneurs who were in the early start-up stag-es of their business venture presented at the Pitch Competition and compet-ed for prize money to put toward their startup idea.

THE AMES FOUNDATION

The Ames Foundation is almost able to break ground on the Ames Miracle Play-ground & Field and needs your help to

make it happen. Connecting generosity with op-portunity, The Ames Foundation is the catalyst for public projects that enhance the quality of life in Ames. Such as, projects that bring fami-lies together, beautify our city, and make Ames a better place to live.

The Ames Miracle Playground and Field is a two part project. Part one is the All-Inclusive Playground, which includes 100% accessible playground features on a rubberized surface, catering to children with physical, cognitive, and sensory disabilities. The second part of the project is a custom field made of a cushioned, rubberized turf, accessible by wheelchair and other assistive devices. This feature will have options for competitive and noncompetitive ath-letic events, specifically targeted towards chil-

dren and adults with disabilities. Regardless of whether someone is in a wheelchair or has an in-tellectual disability, all people want and deserve the right to play, which is a vital part of develop-ment and inclusion.

More than 500 children with special needs at-tend Ames and Gilbert schools. There has, and continues to be, a lack of recreational facilities for these individuals in our community and the

ability to participate in sports leagues is almost non-existent.

conjunction with the Ames Seed Capital Annual Event,

Startup Ames hosted a Pitch Com-petition for companies all across the state of Iowa to come and present their business ventures to a room of investors, business leaders, and entrepreneurs. Eleven companies presented for the chance at win-ning up to $2,500 with prizes being awarded to the top three presenters.

"It was a great chance to offer companies from throughout Iowa the opportunity to present to a di-verse group of folks that may be able to help grow their business, or handle the next issue they will face," said John Hall, Director of Business Development with the

Ames Chamber of Com-merce, and a community starter of Startup Ames.
