LEADERSHIP CAPE CORAL DEFINED.Leadership Cape Coral is a thirteen week program for an adult that educates the participants about the components that make up Cape Coral. The various program days include team building, public safety, education, government, cultural opportunities, infrastructure, corrections, public services, and parks and recreation. These program days are organized and chaired by recent past graduates of the program so that they can share their knowledge concerning the various days.

There have been more than 400 graduates of the program since the charter year in 1993. Many of these graduates become a part of Cape Coral Leadership Alumni and often go on to the Advanced Leadership Cape Coral program with a focus on developing and enhancing management and leadership skills. The final tier of leadership education is Cape Coral Community Trustee program, which is by invitation and helps participants discover areas where they can assume community leadership roles.

Today, our leadership graduates are contributing to vital areas of the community such as; leadership roles in government from the City Council to the State of Florida, community organizations like American Cancer Society, Easter Seals, and Junior Achievement, and leadership with our largest employers. It is not uncommon for our leadership graduates to see the value and feel the need to pass along the gift of leadership by participating in our Cape Coral Jr. Leadership program. Without a doubt the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral has one of the most comprehensive leadership programs in Florida.

ARE YOU INTERESTED?It is simple to participate, just fill out the registration form below and fax, or mail it to the Chamber. We will send you an application. Monthly payment plans are available for tuition. Tuition is $1,200 and includes hotel stay at kick-off, all meals and transportation. Be sure to fill out and submit your application before AUGUST 1, 2015

TESTIMONIALS Leadership Cape Coral opens doors and open your eyes to the community around you. It lays out the assets and the opportunities for you in a way no other investment of time and money could do. I have seen it change the lives of many people and I know it has changed my life forever and that is why I am still involved in Leadership Cape Coral today. The program continues to pay benefits to me, my family, my business and my community.

Leadership Cape Coral isn’t for those that are content with things the way they are. If you or the owner of your business is ready to elevate your performance within the largest city in SW Florida then please sign up for Leadership Cape Coral, it will help you reach that next level. You WON’T be disappointed!

LYNNIE GUZMAN l Class of 2011

Leadership Cape Coral helped save my life! During health day, a physician was telling us that heart attacks don’t always happen in the most common perceived way–chest pain and numbness in the left arm. I remembered that comment when the following week I had a heart attack (throbbing in both arms just below my elbows and no chest pain). I was rushed to the hospital.

I am honored to write my first article to the

membership as your new President/CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral.

For the last 11 years, I have had the privilege of serving you as your Membership Relations Manager, Communications Director, Interim Vice President and now, your Chamber President. While I have enormous shoes to fill, left by Mike “Q” Quaintance, I cannot tell you how excited I am to lead the next journey of our organization with our amazing staff, volunteer leaders and you, the members.

I cannot tell you what a dream come true this is for me. As a Cape Coral native, I have a deep passion for our city and doing my part to ensure its continued growth and success. As the daughter of a small business owner of more than 42 years in the Cape, I also have a deep passion for our members and how the chamber can help them grow their business.

Membership is the lifeblood of our organization and we plan to carry on the traditions set forth by our history while infusing new ideas that will only help us

grow. Growth is important for any business and we plan to make the most of each opportunity to help us grow as an organization, which in turn will help your business grow.

The chamber will continue its mission to promote and serve business and community while upholding our values of Relationships, Teamwork, Innovation, Responsiveness and Integrity.

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the selection committee and the board of directors for having the confidence in me to take on this position. I would also like to thank the members for their well wishes.

We have some very exciting things heading your way in the coming months so stay tuned for some new events and opportunities for your business.

REALIZING PROFITSEd Ramos, Ramos Builders

2015 Chairman

So often new entrepreneurs have great hopes of realizing profits the day they open their doors. Though

this may happen to the lucky ones who comes up with a novel product or idea, the reality is that it often takes many years to realize a profit. It is important to have the capital to achieve that goal to go through

the initial phase of a business startup. It’s no different for those of you that have leadership roles at the various

organizations you work for. Those of you that are leading your organization as managers, presidents or foreman’s and have paid your dues to attain the positions that you hold bringing not only knowledge but life experiences to the betterment of the whole.

Case in point: Donna GermainIt is my privilege to announce that the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral

has selected Donna Germain as its new president and CEO. Donna started her

career with the chamber over 11 years ago. Over those 11 years, she has served as member relations manager, marketing and communications director, interim vice president and now after a nationwide search the Chamber’s Review Committee selected Donna as president and CEO.

Donna has paid her dues and exemplifies the chambers position as a “Leadership Chamber.” I look forward to Donna taking this chamber to new heights. Her passion for the chamber and the city she was born and raised in is unparalleled. Please join me in congratulating Donna.

Speaking of paying dues, let’s not forget when we join family gatherings and enjoy our 4th of July fireworks the men on that historic day in 1776 that gave their lives so that we could become an independent nation. May God bless America for those who took a stance and those who defend her still today! Happy Fourth of July!

“EARLY RECOGNITION OF RISK FACTORS LEADS TO IMPROVED OVERALL BRAIN FUNCTION LATER

ON IN LIFE” Salvatore Lacagnina, D.O.

Vice President of Health & Wellness, Lee Memorial Health System

There are many risk factors for dementia including family history, head trauma, concussions, and

genetics. Early recognition and mitigation are essential if we are to help individuals avoid these devastating mental health problems.

Focusing on the lifestyle and health of our children will help decrease the incidence of dementia in adulthood. It is known that dementia starts to develop in the brain years before any symptoms occur. From the reams of research in this area, it is evident that inflammation in the brain is the inciting factor.

It is also known that dementia is a progressive problem that occurs over years so the more the brain is exposed to things that cause inflammation the greater the likelihood of dementia occurring later on in life.

Because of the above mentioned risk factors, neuroanatomical changes occur including the development of “amyloid plaques” and “neurofibrillary tangles” which both disrupt the normal function of the brain. You can think of this as scars forming in the brain which then disrupts the normal chemical, hormonal and electrical activity in the brain. When these anatomical abnormalities develop to a certain level causing about 30% of the neurons to die, symptoms become evident. This is why it is so important to identify risk factors early. Long before symptoms appear, the aforementioned anatomical (physical) and physiologic (functional) changes are occurring.

Initially symptoms of memory loss might be evident only to the individual (subjective) but as brain damage progresses, Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) develops. MCI represents one symptom that the person notices such as intermittent difficulty with short term memory. But when two or more symptoms develop, this is the diagnosis of dementia.

Dementia is defined as two or more impairments in mental skills that interfere with a person’s ability to function socially, personally or professionally. Risk factors include poor nutrition, limited physical activity, obesity, depression, head trauma, concussions and genetics. The latter has to do with the presence of the gene abnormality called APOE4 (pronounced Apo-E-4) which when present significantly increases a person’s risk for Alzheimer’s decease (AD).

Family history of relatives with AD is a risk factor and if a child is interested in playing a sport whereby head trauma is part of the game (football, hockey, soccer), it might be helpful to test for the APOE4 gene. Realize the more family members a person has with a history of AD, the greater the risk for the individual. Also, a child who has had several head injuries, especially if combined with a concussion, is at more risk.

A history of seizures is another risk for dementia in adulthood, as is a lower level of education. Cigarette smoking is a big risk factor for many diseases and depression is another risk factor which is not uncommon in children.

Once all risk factors are identified, a specific plan should be developed for each and every one. As an example, if poor nutrition is a risk factor then the health care provider, the individual and the family should develop a plan for healthy eating as well as vitamin supplementation. If lack of exercise is the risk, then schedule formal exercise into the child’s daily routine. If obesity is the problem, then have him/her seen by a nutritionist

and other health care providers specializing in childhood obesity. Looking around at the population of children and adolescents today should be a wake-up call for parents, health care providers, educators, politicians and more. We are involved in an obesity epidemic that has now spread from adults to adolescents and younger children. If we do not fix this problem soon, we will have to deal with much more than the upcoming epidemic of dementia since it is well known that obesity significantly increases the risk for all common chronic illnesses and cancers.

Nutrients that are important for the developing (and also for the developed) brain include essential fatty acids (the omega 3 fatty acids DHA & EPA), vitamin D, vitamin C, the B vitamins - B12, B6 and folic acid. Coenzyme Q and Alpha lipoic (ALA) acid might also be helpful. To determine which vitamins and supplements to use requires measuring the blood levels as well as taking a comprehensive diet history which is vitally important. The goal is to replace deficient vitamins, minerals and antioxidants up to a level for optimal health. This means replacing these nutrients above and beyond the RDA (recommended daily allowance) which is set only to prevent disease, not necessarily to get a person to optimally great health. When it comes to health, the goal is for excellence, not just mediocrity.

Next, when it comes to assessing how the brain is truly working, a formal evaluation of brain function is something that should be done for all children, adolescents and adults. We need to know as we are going through life that our brain is developing in a healthy way and that our behaviors and lifestyle are supporting this goal. Probably the best test is the history and physical examination done by the physician or health care provider. Beyond this for adults there are specific tests that can be done to assess brain function including SPECT studies and PET scans, mini mental state examination (MMSE), blood tests for signs of oxidative stress, among others. CT scans and MRI’s look at the anatomy of the brain but in addition to anatomical changes you also want to look at function, blood flow to the brain and electrical activity. A quantitative EEG (electroencephalogram which looks at the electrical activity of the brain) helps with the latter. SPECT scans look at blood flow; and PET scans look at metabolism of the various parts of the brain. All these tests supply the health care provider with a comprehensive assessment of brain anatomy and physiologic function; all help to make a specific diagnosis.

Realize there are many different forms of dementia including Alzheimer’s dementia (AD), Lewy Body disease, vascular dementia and frontotemporal dementia. There are also other diseases such as Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis that are associated with a higher risk of dementia. Depending on the symptoms, signs that are identified with the physical examination, and results of specialized tests as described above, the physician will make a diagnosis and then work with the individual and family to develop an action plan. The goal for the action plan should be to decrease and hopefully eliminate all risk factors; slow the progression of the disease; and possibly reverse the course.

It is so important to understand that delay in diagnosis significantly affects the prognosis and the effectiveness of treatment. It is the same concern we have when evaluating someone who might have heart disease or cancer. If the diagnosis is delayed, then the outcome is affected. When we make a diagnosis early, we can start treatment early and look forward to a better quality of life.

Health is all about maintenance. If you do not take your car in for regular inspections, you do not know if there is an impending problem. The same goes for your health. Therefore, even if you are feeling well, it is important to visit with your health care provider regularly to get your check up and maintenance! In addition to having him/her check your body parts, make sure you get the brain function checked. In between visits keep a diary of signs or symptoms that you experience to ensure that you discuss this at the next office visit. Being prepared for your medical visits is extremely helpful to the physician and very beneficial for the patient.

Stay well my friends and feel free to send comments and questions to [email protected]

All of a sudden, those of us living in our own little slice of heaven called Cape Coral have

started climbing to fame without even knowing it. Want to see how? Keep reading…

But first, let’s take a quick look at the numbers. For the three month period ending 6/30/15:

The trend of diminishing home inventory has not changed. Not only that, but the median price of homes for sale continues its steady upward climb. The number of homes Sold in June went up along with a slight increase in median price.

Condos For Sale followed the trend set by single family homes for sale with decreasing inventory while median prices went up slightly. Numbers of condos Sold ticked upward along with median prices.

Typically, the units sold and closed in June are the last batch of properties that went under contract during high season. What we are seeing that is very healthy are three significant factors:

1. The total number of condos and homes sold are steady between 420 and 500.

2. Median prices are continuing to rise steadily and not spiking, showing confidence in rather than resistance to higher prices.

3. Although not as high as 2005, prices are still lower than national averages,

Buyers are still coming here to buy because they can and they really like it too. Last year and so far this year, 75% of buyers in my transactions have been from out of the area.

Supporting this movement is the July 2015 issue of Money Magazine. This most current issue has a feature article about the 20 best towns in the US for retirement. Guess what? For waterfront living, Cape Coral was one of their picks. Although the issue has been out for about a week as of this writing, we will soon see another rise in interest here as more and more folks start seeing the article.

This all confirms what most of us knew before. Living here is a good decision, especially when compared to so many other places that get cold,

have floods, tornados and a whole slew of other urban maladies. And now for something completely different. For the past several years

I have been a RE/MAX real estate sales agent here in beautiful Cape Coral. Some attentive readers may have noticed a slight change when driving by my office or looking up any of our listings. RE/MAX Island Harbor has dropped the RE/MAX franchise to become Island Harbor Realty once again (that was our name before the franchise).

We are all still where we were before (our office is just behind Bonefish Grill) providing the same high level, customer oriented real estate services to our wonderful customers. As we develop our new/old branding, we welcome any questions from both new and old visitors and any inquiries you may have.

Our new website is more user friendly than the old RE/MAX supplied site and we are very anxious to continue providing everyone with the best services available.

As an example, we got a call from an agent in Fort Myers who was selling a property to a new client. That client had to sell their current home in order to purchase the “new” one in a gated community. Our mission was to sell the existing home.

On a personal visit with the homeowner we learned that a realtor (with whom they had worked over the years to buy this house and referred to several other family members and friends) had not returned calls for several days and finally could not fit this “valued” client into his busy schedule.

We were able to list and market the house and then get it under contract in 6 days at a price higher per square foot than anything comparable in the neighborhood. Magic? No. Hard work? Yes! But that is what is supposed to happen when you engage the right realtor.

And isn’t that what it is all about? Finding the right person for the job at hand. In real estate, finding a realtor is only part of it. The next part is finding someone who will get it done and make it easy for you the client. Buyers and sellers alike must complete this part of the process in order to have a positive real estate experience. A knowledgeable realtor with plenty of related resources is your best bet for Happy Property Hunting or Selling!

$LCEC works hard to manage costs, maintain the electric system, improve processes and create efficiencies so that electric rates can remain competitive for customers. We do not plan to raise rates in 2013 and will continue to do everything possible to keep rates stable.

The increase on your upcoming electric bill is due to a tax imposed by the City of Cape Coral. LCEC customers in Cape Coral will notice a change in their electric bill beginning October 1, 2013. Cape Coral City officials recently levied a public service tax of 7 percent that will be added to monthly electric bills. The new tax will be displayed on your LCEC bill as a separate line item so it can be easily identified. LCEC is required by law to collect the tax from business and residential customers who purchase electricity in Cape Coral. LCEC will deliver funds to the City similar to how Cape Coral franchise fees are delivered, which are also collected through electric bills. This new tax will be used to fund the City’s general operations. To calculate the amount the monthly public service tax will add to your electric bill, visit www.capecoral.net and utilize the PST Calculator. Please refer any questions regarding the Cape Coral public service tax to the Cape Coral Citizens’ Action Center, 239-574-0425.

LCEC hasn’t raised electric rates in nearly 5 years!

UNIVERSITY LIFE, OUR PEOPLE

Professor MIchael “Q” Quaintance, MBAKeiser University

You are a busy manager, there are several interruptions throughout the day, and you are juggling several

projects or problems. What do you prioritize as you juggle these daily tasks? What is the most expensive line item cost on your budget? What asset generates the greatest revenue?

The answers to these questions for most of us are simply our people. Most of us probably do not spend enough time coaching our people because we are working in our businesses. Once a year many of us conduct performance evaluations, but is this adequate? Do your people perform better thirty days prior to, and after, the performance evaluations? When you spend time coaching your people, do you follow-up? If you do not follow-up, one thing is certain, it will not lead to change.

As managers we need to track employees’ progress. You are not going to remember everything you see, hear, and think about during the performance review, so take the time to write it down before the conversation ends. During your discussion, notes will allow you to keep track of your people’s goals, observe

their growth, and give feedback that is more meaningful in the future. Create a customized template that you can fill in each time you meet with a team member. When completed, place the form in their personnel file for future reference.

After each session, ask yourself:• What steps can I take to support this person’s development between now

and our next meeting?• What did I learn from the meeting that I did not know before?• What did the person that I was coaching learn?• What key messages were reinforced in the meeting? If you have any questions or would like input concerning your performance review

process, just call, or e-mail me at Keiser University (239) 277-1336, [email protected].
