Homestead’s Ruth Campbell and Florida City
Vice Mayor Roy S. Shiver were honored during
the Miami-Dade County Days at the state Capitol
this month.
Homestead’s Ruth Campbell and Florida City Vice Mayor Roy S. Shiver were
honored during the Miami-Dade County Days at the state Capitol this month.
The annual Miami-Dade County Days is a three day celebration when leaders
and elected officials from Miami-Dade municipalities visit Tallahassee during the
legislative session.
Campbell was awarded the Sherman Winn ‘I Care’ Award. The honor, named
after the late Senator, is given to a person who has made a positive difference in
their community.
For more than three decades she has devoted her life to public service and to
the City of Homestead.
“I am so happy to have won this award,” Campbell said. “It shows that what
we are doing here in Homestead is being noticed.”
She was the first woman elected to the Homestead City Council in 1963 and in 1997 when she did not seek re-election she was
given the title of “Honorary Mayor of Krome Avenue.”
Campbell was involved in numerous civic organizations during her tenure and continues to be very active in the Homestead com-
munity. She is currently the museum director and local historian of the Historic Homestead Town Hall Museum. Through her ef-
forts, she has committed herself to developing an awareness and appreciation for the City’s historic assets and an urgency for
preservation. She has also served on local, state and national boards.
Shiver received the Sen. Ron Silver ‘Dean’ Award, for his 50 years of service as an elected official in FloridaCity. Shiver was first
elected to the commission in 1964 and is the longest standing municipal elected official in the entire state of Florida.
During his time on the commission, Shiver has overseen the Police Department among many other facets of the city. Shiver com-
mented on how proud he is with the growth of the Police Department over the years.
“When I was elected there were just two patrolmen and one car,” Shiver said. Shiver stated he was surprised and honored to
receive the award.
“I’ve served 50 out of FloridaCity’s 100 years,” Shiver said. “I’ve seen this town grow and progress. I have tried to help the resi-
dents as best as I can, and I have kept them happy. It is really an honor.”
Along with being on the commission, Shiver has served on numerous boards during his tenure. Last week he was named to the
Florida League of Cities board.
“I got a letter that said ‘Welcome Home’,” Shiver said. “Being on this board will continue to help our city.”

April Chamber Events
Florida Chamber Chairman, Eric Silagy, Presi-dent of NextERA/FPL and the current chairman of the Florida Chamber of Commerce spoke at the Homestead/Florida City Chamber of Com-merce Membership Luncheon on April 16
th Eric reported Florida’s economy is growing. Payroll numbers are up. Unemployment is down. Real estate is moving. Tourists are coming to our state in record numbers. And, Florida is expanding its com-petitive edge. See more at: http://southdadenewsleader.com/issue/south-dade-news-leader/article/state-chamber-chairman-comes-to-homestead The Powering Florida Resource Center provides economic develop-ment organizations with information and tools that enable them to more effectively market their community, including: Analyze industry sectors relevant to their geographic area Better target companies for recruitment - PoweringFlorida® Access complete community profiles for labor force, demographics and available real estate. - See more at: http://www.poweringflorida.com/#sthash.TPPdfkWT.dpuf
Eric believes that our community has a great opportunity in the aerospace industry. After the meeting he took a ride around the com-munity with FPL's Mike Kiley and what he saw reinforced this view. As NASA’s role continues to change, private aerospace companies are playing increasingly important roles in space exploration. Flor-ida must aggressively compete to remain the preeminent location for private spaceflight activities, engage in more research and de-velopment and capitalize on Florida’s bright space industry talent supply. Florida’s aerospace industry helps to generate bold eco-nomic development initiatives and brings much needed jobs not only to Florida’s Space Coast, but throughout the state. Military Affairs Committee holds 15th annual awards banquet by Senior Airman Aja Heiden
482nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs
The night was capped off by remarks from 482nd FW commander and host, Col.
Chris Funk, who congratulated the award winners and nominees and thanked the
MAC, award presenters and sponsors for their support of the event and Home-
stead ARB.
The MAC has supported the military mission and military quality of life for over 43
years, and the awards banquet is just one event of many the committee works to
put together. The MAC is comprised of up to 50 civic and local leaders who meet
monthly to discuss issues relating to the civilian-military relationship, according to
their mission statement.
About the Military Affairs Committee
The Homestead - Florida City Military Affairs Committee (MAC) is a committee of
the Homestead - Florida City Chamber of Commerce and has proudly supported
the military mission and military quality of life for over forty-three years. The
Charter of the Military Affairs Committee is to assist military units within the
Chamber's area to meet their mission and goals, promote understanding between
the civilian and military communities, enhance the quality of life for our military and
their families, and to support - as practical - other military units in Dade County
area.
This support was focused on Homestead Air Force Base through 1992, and now Homestead Air Reserve Base (482d Fighter Wing) and its joint missions.
These diverse missions now include not only the 482nd Fighter Wing's F-16 mission, but the Florida Air National Guard's sovereign air defense mission, Spe-
cial Operations Command South, USCG Maritime Safety & Security Team Miami 91114, US Customs & Border Patrol, Florida Army Guard's 50th Area Sup-
port Group, and various temporary missions assigned to the base.
Comprised of up to fifty civic and local leaders, the Military Affairs Committee meets monthly to discuss issues relating to the civilian-military relationship.
For membership information or to attend one of our monthly luncheons, please contact us at [email protected]. To view the Homestead Military

The Florida Defense Support Task Force is meeting in Homestead on Wednesday May 14th and Thurs-
day May 15th. As the hosting committee we are trying to gather community leaders to support this very im-
portant visit. On the evening of May 14th a No Host Dinner will take place at Capri Restaurant starting with
cocktails at 6:30pm. In a casual and less formal setting this will give the Task Force members an opportunity
to discuss local issues that affect the Homestead Air Reserve Base. We would be honored if you could join
us!
Thursday May 15th at 9am the Task Force will hold a public meeting at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Home-
stead. Briefings will be given on the status of the HARB as well as other military installations in the Dade
County area. It would be great if you could also attend this meeting to help fill the room and show the Task
Force that the local military defense community truly supports the Homestead Air Reserve Base, the tenant
units and their missions.

Trustees of the Chamber
The Chamber Trustees are leaders in our community who recognize that their business success and failure is tied to the area around them. In taking a leadership position, the Trustees are insuring their future success by reinvesting in the local business community through the Greater Homestead/Florida City Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber Trustees voluntarily contribute more than required because they believe in the important programs of the Greater Home-stead/Florida City Chamber of Commerce. They understand that the prominence of their organization makes it appropriate for them to assume the role of a substantial participant and contributor to the Chamber’s operation. Members like this refuse to let the burden of improving the business climate and our local quality of life fall on others. Trustee contributions make it possible to maintain the Chamber’s day to day opera-tions with an efficient and professional staff who, in turn, bring more and better programs to the business community.
