2015 NYC TRASHION FASHIONWesterly, RI designer Pamela Bartlett transformed more than 5000 aluminum can pull tabs and hundreds of plastic grocery store bags into a wedding gown that has been selected for the 2015 NYC Trashion Fashion Show taking place at the Queens Botanical Garden, in Flushing, NY on June 21st. Ms. Bartlett’s design was selected for the show after being discovered through social media outlets linked to her local wedding planning website and blog, WesterlyWeddings.com. As a member of the Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Chamber of Commerce, she created the gown for this year’s 2nd Annual Earth Day Trashion Fashion event at the Granite Theater in Westerly, RI. The gown has since been displayed in the downtown storefront of Melissa Ashley Brides. Congratulations Pamela!

Finally, a Proper “Welcome to Rhode Island”

After years of having a boarded up state welcome center in Rich-mond on I-95, complete with Jersey barriers blocking its entrance, The Rhode Island Department of Trans-portation is now proposing to build a new welcome center at Exit 1 off Interstate 95.

The proposed welcome center is being billed as “the Rhode Island Travel Plaza and Transit Hub” and promises much more than tourist information. In addition to maps, brochures, and restrooms, there would be a terminal for Rhode Is-land Public Transit Authority buses, which could bring expanded public transit service to the area. There would be electric-vehicle charging stations, a picnic area and a com-muter parking lot as well as parking for 200 cars. The proposed project would be funded by a federal infra-structure improvement grant.

Most importantly, the Welcome Center would provide the proper image for our state, a dramatic im-provement over the abandoned eye-sore that sends the wrong message to visitors. Additionally, the location of this new center is much closer to the actual border of CT/ RI. The older facility is 6 miles deep into the state and a great dis-service to Westerly. Basically, travelers would be long past our town before they were “welcomed” and given information on all that there is to offer. The likelihood for someone turning around and head-ing the opposite direction of their travels on the interstate would be very small. This Chamber had originally opposed the Richmond location for that very reason many years ago. We endorse this new improved location and extend our thanks to the State of RI for pursu-ing this project.

While no vote has taken place yet, our region’s testi-mony made such an impact that a state study commis-sion is being formed to evaluate the entire RI hotel tax structure and make recommendations for next year. In the meantime, all tourism councils in RI will receive a 5% reduction in hotel taxes. The money saved at the regional level will be directed to a statewide branding effort, allowing RI to better compete with New En-gland states that spend 10-15 times what RI does on statewide branding. The State will be adding 4 jobs and increasing their social media and marketing ef-forts. Our Chamber met privately with Wade Gibson, Chief of Staff, Executive Office of Commerce at State of Rhode Island for about 45 minutes. He now better understands our concerns regarding the hotel tax, the various groups that are involved with marketing our area and which efforts are not yielding results or are considered ineffective by Westerly government and business organizations. Wade assures us that the new structure at the state level will have built in mecha-nisms for measuring ROI and that Governor Raimondo is highly engaged in efforts to reduce inefficiency or poor performance. We are awaiting our next meeting which will be with House Finance Committee Chair-man Raymond Gallison Jr. Thank you to Representa-tives Sam Azzinaro of Westerly and Lauren Carson of Newport for continuing to champion this cause.

Whit Davis and his “bride” Velora arrived in high style to The Chamber’s annual dinner where he was honored as the 2015 Citizen of the Year. The evening included a beautiful video testimonial, a ceremonial friendship song by members of the Mohegan Tribe, innumerable citations from RI, CT and U .S. governmental agencies, an original watercolor of the Stanton Davis homestead, and a check for $2,000 to help renovate the home into a museum. Mr. Davis, age 91, is a true treasure in this community and a champion for conservation. The 16 minute video tribute to his life and legacy can be found on You Tube.

The Chamber proudly hosted the 58th An-nual Membership Banquet at Venice Restau-rant on June 17th. It featured a spirited live auction, silent auction Chaired by Angela Smith, a report of The Chamber’s Annual Pro-gram of Work by Executive Director Lisa Kon-icki, and recognition of board members com-pleting their service.

The Chamber is losing Board Members who’ve served their 3 year term and were most helpful to the Chamber by donating their time and services to the Chamber. They are as follows: Rosario Cacciatore, Nick Fu-saro, and Tony Spino. Richard Panciera, Esq is very valuable Board Member we are losing this year. He served with distinction for 10 years. He rose through the ranks and served as President last year. We are also regrettably losing board member Tina Pagliusi. On a pos-itive note, we are delighted to welcome newly elected Board Members Sergio Cherenzia of Cherenzia & Associates, Paul Gencarella Jr. of John Conti Insurance, Anabel Montalbano of Westerly Fitness, Edward Smith of Chariho Furniture and Susan Irvine of the Inn at Ston-ington.

The highlight of the dinner was honoring our award recipients lead by our very capable emcee Edward P. Morrone, former Rhode Is-land State Senator.

Paul Donahue, a veteran of the Chamber Board was awarded the Key Award for his in-credible commitment to helping the Chamber achieves its mission. He served 3 years on our Board. He donated the paint and some of the manpower to help us paint the building trim

last year, after Superstrom Sandy, he and his wife Karen helped raise over $6,000. However, nothing can top the partnership he proposed wherein Westerly enter The Main Street Mat-ters Contest. Without Paul’s partnership with the Chamber we beat out over 800 towns in the country and became 1 of 20 towns who won the Main Street Matters contest. The re-sults were astounding - 32 of our buildings in downtown painted FREE - no strings attached. This accomplishment will go down in the his-tory books of one of this Chamber’s greatest gifts to the Town.

The Chamber bestowed this year’s Citizen of the Year Award to John Withman Davis more commonly known as Whit. Whit has a depth of service that is far-reaching, and that has touched many groups in our two state regions. His list of community service is in-credible and spans several decades including 11 years on the Conservation Commission in Stonington, and 16 years on the Inlands Wet-land Commission. Whit also served as Master of Pawcatuck Masons Lodge #90 in Pawcatuck in 1961 and was a Mounted Coastal Scout for Naval Intelligence during World War II. For more than 30 years Whit has been selling Da-vis Farm produce at local Farmer’s Markets. He is authentic, unabashed and a very proud Yankee. To watch the video testimonial about this fine man please head to the Chamber’s Facebook page and YouTube Channel where it was recently posted.

Congratulations to both men!
