Rising to Meet New Challengesand Opportunities

-Jerry Youngberg

2007 certainly provided THE CHAMBER with challenges. But withevery challenge there are exciting opportunities.

Are we going to take advantage of these opportunities to move THECHAMBER and the community to an even better place to do business, raise a family, educate our children, provide for the less fortunate, grow

old and enjoy every day of our life?I am certain that we will with your involvement andcommitment to that end.

When I speak of the community I want to emphasize, and you will hear it often, that I amspeaking of “THE FORKS”; “THE GRAND CITIES”; “EAST GRAND FORKS-GRANDFORKS”; “GRAND FORKS-EAST GRAND FORKS”; or any other term that encompassesthe business and residential areas on both sides of the Red River at the place where the Red LakeRiver joins the Red River.

We are one community even though we have 2 city governments, 2 county governments, 2,3 or4 school systems, 2 or 3 park systems, 2 states, 1 metropolitan planning organization, 2 or morepost high school education organizations and a multitude of both separate and combinedvoluntary and civil organizations providing services that add to the quality of life in thiscommunity.

We are “RISING TO MEET THE CHALLENGES AND THE OPPORTUNITIES”. You notonly see it as you look at the skyline, but also as you see the changes in the communityboundary lines, the new housing developments of single family homes, townhomes, condos andapartments; the growth of individual businesses, and the number of new businesses andbusinesses looking for employees.

THE CHAMBER was given its direction at the annual planning summit in October:

*To become more involved in influencing the governmental decision making process.*To develop more strategic partnerships with other organizations and entities that are mutuallybeneficial.*To find and develop needed services for members that are financially viable.*To become financially stronger.*To focus on both membership retention and growth.*To increase the value of the membership to the business community.*To continue development of “THE CHAMBER FOUNDATION”.*To continue work on a facility presence in East Grand Forks.

The specific goals of your chair are:*Hiring a new CEO/President.*Hiring a new membership director.*1008 members by the end of 2008.*An active and functioning Government Affairs Committee.*Collaborate with other organizations in the community to develop a 5 or 10 year plan for thecommunity.*Hold a mini planning session after a new CEO is on staff.*Continue moving the Board of Directors to become a policy board.

A simple THANK YOU is not adequate, but I know of no other way to express our gratitude toKristi Hall-Jiran for her leadership, dedication and tireless devotion to THE CHAMBER thispast year as Board Chair. The organization and communication she provided throughout theyear has set a standard that will be very difficult to match.

A sincere THANK YOU for the opportunity you have given me to be THE CHAMBER’sBoard Chair for 2008.

An expectation that each of you will have a HAPPY NEW YEAR. And that will happen if youremember that……. “HAPPINESS IS A CHOICE”.

Marketing your business is a never-ending chal-lenge of trying to find the right combination of theFive P’s – Product, Price, Place, Promotion, and

People. Countless hours are spent in researchingprimary and secondary data bases, drawing upformulated marketing plans, looking for “goodnumbers” in picking the right media mix, and

keeping a wary eye on marketing costs. Too oftenthis results in a conservative approach to market-ing that may be moderately successful but leaves

you, the business owner, yearning for more.

This Brown Bag program will take a look at somedifferent twists on marketing employed by busi-

nesses to gain awareness in their marketplace byusing the “3C-T” approach – Clarity, Cleverness,

Common sense, and Tracking.
