One of the most joyous times of the year has finally arrived and our main goal is to keep everyone safe so they can enjoy the holiday season with their friends and family.

Although the holidays are filled with excitement, they tend to be busy and hectic at times. We are urging citizens to review the following tips that will help you and your family stay safe this holiday season:

t When you go shopping, make sure you lock your car doors and remember where you park. Parking in a well-lit area is encouraged. Keep important items -- such as purses, presents, and expensive electronics -- hidden out of sight or place them in the trunk.

t Bring with you only the credit cards you need instead of having to carry a large amount of cash in your wallet. It is easier to cancel a credit card than it is to get your cash back if your experience a loss or theft.

t Keep the receipts if you pay with a credit card. Also, make sure you have records of all your cards at home in case they are stolen.

t Closely watch your account and alert your bank for suspicious activity or purchases you didn’t make.

t Guard your personal information. Avoid giving out your social security number, your mother’s maiden name or birth dates to others.

t If you shop online, only buy from reputable businesses.

t Watch out for the scams: A “good deal” may not always be what it says and online scams are prevalent during the holiday season.

Tampa Crossroads Vocational Rehabilitation Employment (VRE) Program assists adults with disabilities and Veterans to find meaningful careers. The VRE Program approaches the future with excitement and hope, and is always looking for new and better ways to serve these job seekers and employers.

We use our partnership with various community organizations including, the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce, and private sec-tor businesses to create opportunities to assist our job seekers in developing a solid and strong work ethic and a real appreciation to address the very special employment needs for people with disabilities and our Veterans.

Training and job coaching is essential for your success. A job coach is available for any client that may need on-the-job training or assistance in their new position. Individualized approaches are designed to help the client achieve his/her career goals. The job coach is flexible and creative, revising the training methods throughout the duration of participation in the VRE Program to insure improved job performance.

t Keep a secure hold on your purse and handbags to prevent theft.

tBe aware of your surroundings. Shop during daylight hours. If you choose to shop at night, bring a friend so that you are not alone.

t Be extra cautious about locking all doors and windows at your house, even when you are home.

t When you are out, leave a television or radio on so that it seems as if someone is home.

t Make sure your Christmas trees are mounted on a sturdy base and make sure they are not blocking any passageways.

t Ensure the wiring on decorative lights is not damaged or frayed.

t Be aware that criminals sometimes pose as couriers deliver-ing gifts. Also, it is not uncommon for them to solicit false charities and go door-to-door asking for donations. Only donate to a recognized organization.

t If a package is being delivered, schedule it while you are home or have it sent to a safe location where either you or a close associate can sign for it.

As always, our deputies will be patrolling all throughout the holidays to keep our community protected. The members of the Pasco Sheriff’s Office hope you have a safe and happy holiday!

Brochure ExchangesThere will be no

Brochure Exchanges during the month of December

or on Thursday, January 1, 2015, due to the Holidays.

School districts and two consortia of school boards across the state have approved resolutions calling on the state to provide a three-year transition period for full implementation of the Florida Standards, the Florida Standards Assessment, and the application of accountability measures. The District School Board of Pasco also is considering whether it should take any official action.

We’ve had standards for years and we agree that we have to assess students to make sure that we are teaching them those standards. Standardized tests are useful for measuring whether we are doing that.

Accountability also is necessary. We accept that we must be held accountable for providing students with a high quality education based on the state’s standards.

Teacher evaluations are necessary, as well, to measure educator effectiveness. One way to determine a teacher’s effectiveness is to monitor how their students perform on standardized tests, but that is merely a snapshot of a teacher’s quality in the classroom.

The School Board is looking at those three areas of concern with Florida’s system.

We are concerned that Florida is moving too quickly to imple-ment the new assessments without knowing whether they are valid, reliable, and fair. We also worry that districts may not have the technology infrastructure and devices to administer these online tests. A third concern is with the way Florida applies the results of student standardized assessments to measure, penalize, and reward teachers, students, schools and school districts.

We will work with the Pasco Legislative Delegation on these issues to try to convince the state to take a step back, confirm the reliability of the new standardized test, and make sure that all districts have the capacity to administer them. So much rides on getting it right this time, and we hope to convince state leaders to slow down the implementation process.

2014 Constitution Essay Contest Award Ceremonyporter Tom Jackson, and author Gail Diederich graciously volunteered to serve on the judging panel, evaluating each entry against contest and FCAT criteria. Dr. O’Neil recognized contest winners at the Pasco County School Board meeting on October 21, 2014. Family members, teachers, and administrators took part in the event.

Jordan Eddy’s essay stood out among the excellent en-tries. Summarizing his essay, Jordan wrote, “This document is important to me because rights are the things that make America the Land of the Free. Rights give us so many things that make us proud and grateful citizens.”

Jordan and his family will enjoy lunch with Dr. O’Neil and receive an escorted tour of the West Pasco Judicial Center. Dr. O’Neil ex-tends a thank you and congratulations to all of the participants for their hard work and reflection on such an important topic.

Left to right: Superintendent Kurt Browning, Clerk & Comptroller Paula S. O’Neil, Ph.D., Principal Thomas Barker, Anya Gorgas, Autumn Cole, Ms. Jennifer Palmer, Jordan Eddy, Chairman Alison Crumbley

Ultimate Office PartyDecember 6, 20147:00pm to 2:00am • Historic Downtown DistrictDue to cutbacks as a result of the economic downturn, many businesses may be eliminating the traditional Holiday Office Party. If that is the case, you now have a place to go—the Ultimate Office Party being hosted by Greater New Port Richey Main Street’s Hospitality Managers Association (HMA). The fun takes place in downtown New Port Richey on Saturday December 6th from 7 pm to 2 am. The party is part of the continuing series of downtown activities, where downtown restaurants and taverns compete for bragging rights and prizes in the areas of decoration and seasonal libations. That evening the Downtown Art Gallery will be transformed into the North Pole, and patrons will pick up their passport that will be used to cast their ballot in the Ultimate Office Party contest. HITS 106 is returning for a LIVE REMOTE in our downtown as our restaurants and taverns compete for the Themed categories (decorations, costumes, drinks, etc.) The participating establishments will be the member restaurants and tav-erns in downtown New Port Richey. There will be a trolley available courtesy of Friendly KIA to take people from place to place and return them to the Gallery where the votes will be tallied and the winners announced.
