In 1922 Earl Peak, owner of Marshall Electric Company asked Merle Easter, an engineer at Marshall Electric Company and Chauncey Hoover if they could build a “radio-telephone station”. A five-wire antenna was mounted on poles on the west side of Marshall Electric Company building at the corner of 16th and Main allowing the 10-watt homemade transmitter to broadcast to Marshalltown. Before call letters were issued the radio sta-tion was simply known as amateur code station 9-DCV and 9-LT. On June 2, 1923, KFJB was officially licensed by the Department of Commerce. In the fall of 1922 staff at the radio station ran a microphone cable through a studio window and along a West Main Street ditch to Frank-lin Field which was three blocks away at the corner of 13th and Main Street. Two Marshalltown football games were broadcast live in a single afternoon. In May of 1923, cable was again extended to Franklin Field to broadcast a live track and field event with Merle Easter providing trackside coverage. These live remote sports broadcasts are considered to be the first of their kind in the United States. A little later in 1923 KFJB began offering regular programming which included vocalists, sermons, speeches, comedians, and news. One of the biggest problems KFJB faced was staying on the right frequency, and the little 10-watt signal could be reached sometimes as far away as Canada. Eventually power increases were granted by the Federal Communications Commission to 15 watts in 1927, 100 watts in 1928, 250 watts in 1930 and 1,000 watts in 1961. In September of 1937, new studios were completed in the Marshall Electric location at 16th and Main at a cost of $35,000. Earl Peak passed away in 1945 and the radio station was briefly operated by a group of Des Moines businessmen until it was sold to the Times Republican Printing Company on April 18, 1947. In June of 1947, the studios briefly moved to the second floor of the Batesole Building at the corner of 2nd and Main Street. On November 11, 1948, a fire caused extensive damage to these studios causing a temporary broadcast location in the Times Republican building across the street. In 1949 KFJB moved to a new state of the art studio on the 3rd floor of the Lay Building at 133 East Main Street. The building was then referred to as the KFJB Building. (This building burned down in

February 8, 2012.) In 1949, the radio station had a staff of 21 employees including announcers, copywriters, secretaries, news staff and announc-ers. KFJB continued operation at this location until December 15, 1979, when it moved to its present location in the lower level of the former J.C. Penney building, now the U.S. Bank building at 123 West Main Street. In 1987, KFJB and her sister sta-tion KXIA were purchased from the Times Republican by Marshalltown Broadcasting, Inc. Today, the format is news-talk with a 24/7 broad-casting schedule.

Economic StatisticsMEDIC website is source for local information The Marshall Economic Development Impact Committee (MEDIC) web site, www.marshalltownworks.com, is a great resource for current de-mographic information about Marshalltown, Marshall County and the State of Iowa. It also includes many links to other professional resources and free documents to download. These pieces of data are constantly updated to assist business decision makers considering moving to Marshall County, expanding their current local operation, or developing a business plan for the next local entrepreneurial venture. The backbone of the MEDIC web site is the information listed on Loca-tion One Information System (LOIS), a state-of-the-art on-line application that is currently utilized by more than 6,500 communities in 12 states. This online tool showcases economic development data and available property including demographics, transportation, environment, labor force, average wage, taxation, building size and type and much more. MEDIC updates and maintains the Marshall County and Marshalltown information as well as the information for all the incorporated communities within Marshall County. These updates are ongoing as new data becomes available. LOIS offers a unique platform that allows MEDIC to share that information in “real time” with their economic development allies such as Alliant Energy and the Iowa Economic Development Authority, as well as the opportunity to publish building, site, interactive maps (GIS) and community informa-tion on their own web site. As an added benefit, this information is dis-played on the Internet at LocationOne.com, which is targeted to site selec-tion consultants nationwide. A variety of other resources are featured on the MEDIC web site includ-ing the downloadable community information related to demographics and employment characteristics, a business plan template with financial pro-jections for entrepreneurs, the most recent retail trade analysis for Mar-shalltown and Marshall County, and census based community information and other reports and resources from the Iowa State University Regional Economics & Community Analysis Program. In addition, every page of the MEDIC web site has links to our strategic partners including the City of Marshalltown, Marshall County, the Mar-shalltown Area Chamber of Commerce, Marshalltown Convention & Visi-tors Bureau, Iowa Economic Development Authority, Marshalltown Water Works, our utility partners at Alliant and Consumers Energy, and many others. These are meant to make the decision to invest in Marshall County as seamless as possible and provide a comprehensive overview of the qual-ity of life Marshalltown and Marshall County provide. The goal of the MEDIC website is to serve a broad range of users and decision makers with access to the wide-range of professional resourc-es, reports, information and the da-tabase available through LOIS. If you don’t find what you need, you can email MEDIC directly using the “Contact Us” tab or call us directly at 641-753-6645.
