From the Better Business Bureau

Whether you’re looking to make a switch orpicking one for the first time, choosing a mer-chant processor is an important decision thatcan be vital to the overall success of your busi-ness. Offering a variety of payment methods is oneway to ensure your business succeeds – ac-cording to one estimate, businesses forfeit upto 80 percent of consumer impulse buys if theydon’t accept credit cards. Your BBB advises choosing a merchantprocessor with care. This year alone BBB hasreceived more than 1,700 complaints againstcredit card merchant and processing services. When selecting a merchant processing serv-ice:Ask around. Like with any important busi-ness decision, always make sure to get at leastthree estimates and check the BBB BusinessReview® of the merchant processing service. It may also be worth asking fellow businessleaders which service they use to get a feel forits track record.

Know where to turn. Make sure the mer-chant processing service has a solid supportteam. Can you contact them 24 hours a day? This is very important to business owners whoare trying to process a card outside of the typ-ical business hours. In any case, technical sup-port is a must and it’s vital to your business’success to make sure that the merchant pro-cessing service you choose has it.Try them out.Don’t settle without a trial pe-riod. By making sure that the merchant pro-cessing service you choose has a 100 percentmoney-back guarantee before selecting them, you can save yourself a lifetime of hassle. Seehow the service tries out. Do they keep everypromise that they made to you?Make sure every penny you spend is nec-

essary. If you have a question regarding a feethat you were charged, ask! Staying competi-tive with other merchant services is the nameof the game for theses processors so they willwant to keep you happy. Start With Trust. For trustworthy consumertips and information, visit wynco.bbb.org orcall 970-484-1348 or 800-564-0371.

The Craig Moffat Economic DevelopmentPartnership (CMEDP) will continue to rampup its work in economic development andbusiness support including opening theBusiness Incubator One-Stop Center in 2012even as it transitions from leadership by out-going Director, Darcy Owens-Trask. CMEDP is closing out a highly successful2011 and the organization is poised to ex-pand small business and entrepreneurial pro-grams by consolidating and increasing itseconomic gardening services in the new cen-ter to be housed in the CNCC Bell Tower. The organization will build on the mo-mentum from recent successes such as theEconomic Update and Small Business Fairevent that featured Dr. Carl Steidtmann andanticipate 2012 to be its best year yet. Sup-porting Moffat County’s primary industrieswill continue to be a focus for CMEDP thatwill remain separate from the Business In-cubator. “The primary industries of energy explo-ration and extraction and electrical utilitiesare very important to the Craig/Moffat econ-

omy and CMEDP recognizes that there aretimes when, as a private, non-profit, com-munity organization, CMEDP can be highlyeffective in helping those industries throughadvocacy said Owens-Trask. “We know thatprimary industry support work aligns partic-ularly well with the goals of Moffat Countyand CMEDP will continue and expand thatwork in 2012 as well.” Owens-Trask has accepted a position inDenver working in economic developmentfor the state but has committed to ensuring asmooth transition. CMEDP will be accepting applications forthe Director position, which has been a part-time position since 2008, until the position isfilled. That process is anticipated to goquickly. The director position is likely tofilled going forward as full-time, howeverCMEDP has not made a final decision onthat status. EmploymentThe employment situation in bothcounties continues to improve. InMoffat County the employment hashad a slight improvement and whenseasonally adjusted is relatively un-changed from 12 months ago. Theemployment situation in RouttCounty is beginning to rapidly im-prove compared to last year’s season-ally adjusted numbers. Thishighlights the confidence employerslocated in Routt County have in thelocal economy. Employers are begin-ning to hire and there is a strong pos-sibility the hiring is for part-timepositions.

Banking DataThe Federal Deposit Insurance Cor-poration (FDIC) just released the in-stitutional deposits amounts as of6/30/2011. On an aggregate basis thebanks in both counties have seen anincrease in the number of depositscompared to last year. This is yet an-other indicator pointing to the under-lying economic recovery that ishappening regionally.

Construction/Real Estate/Foreclo-suresThe “for sale” housing inventory inboth counties continues to decline al-beit at a slow pace. This October

there were 225 housing units for salein Moffat County and 1,015 in RouttCounty. This represents a decline of16% in Moffat and 6% in Routt sincethe first quarter. In October the median listing pricefor homes in Routt County continuedits slow and steady upward pace.Median listing home price in RouttCounty is $495,000. This is about 3%greater than last year. In MoffatCounty the decline in median listingprices has continued. The medianlisting home price in Moffat Countyis $170,000. This represents a 17.6%decline over last year. The new residential constructionpredictor indicator remains wellbelow the 2.5% needed before therewill be any sign of a significant in-crease in new home building. The foreclosure ratio in RouttCounty for October was 1 in 463.This is about equal to the statewideaverage. In comparison to similarmountain communities, the foreclo-sure in Routt County is better thanEagle and Garfield counties andworse than either La Plata or Summitcounties.Location Foreclosure Ratio(Oct.)Nationally 1 in 563Colorado 1 in 458Comparable CountiesRoutt 1 in 463Eagle 1 in 262Garfield 1 in 259La Plata 1 in 913Summit 1 in 905

EnergyCoal production data has not beenupdated by the state yet, so the datashown in the report is unchangedfrom last month. The number of producing wells inboth counties is lower than last year. However, to better understand thisdata, YVDP has developed a produc-tivity indicator using the averageBTUs produced by wells in thecounty. This new indicator highlightsthat although the number of produc-ing wells in Moffat County is lower, the energy productivity per well isup. This shows that the wells thathave lower production cost per BTUwere active during July. The differ-ence in the number of wells produc-ing has more to do with nationalcommodity pricing than it does withany given well’s potential capabili-ties.In October Moffat County saw 8new well drilling permits approved.Routt County did not see any newwell drilling permits approved. Mof-fat County is on pace to have activityvery similar to the pace of new wellapprovals seen in 2007. Even at thisrate of approval, 2011 will be sub-stantially below the approval activityseen in 2006.
