Chalupa, wait what?Chalupa Store offers unique and carefully curated items for everyday life, crafted by designers and artisans from Mexico.

Our name doesn’t exactly refer to food. In fact, the word “chalupa” goes a long way back in our history. Once upon a time, when Mexico was a mysterious land surrounded by water and pyramids, the Cha-lupa was the boat that the Aztecs, our country’s last native civiliza-tion before the Spanish Conquest, used to navigate along the Great City of Tenochtitlan’s channels, transporting food and flowers to sell around the city.

That is exactly what we do now. We navigate across continents, bring-ing the best of Mexican design to your hands.

What we doWe carefully select beautiful items of contemporary design that are blended with traditional Mexican craftsmanship.

All of our collections are made with the highest quality materials, are aesthetically beautiful, and are manufactured through sustainable processes.

Chalupa　—　チャルパ　–　という響きは、なんだかキャンディーの名前のようですが、食べる物ではありません。名前の由来は古代までさかのぼります。太古の昔、メキシコがまだ湖やピラミッドに覆われた神秘の地だったころ、アステカの人々がテスココ湖に浮かぶ首都テノチティトランへ渡るために使っていた船、それが“Chalupa”でした。この船にゆられながら、商人たちは食べ物や花などの商品を運び、街中で商いを営んでいました。

わたしたちは現代のChalupaで、メキシカンデザインの逸品をお手元までお届けします。

About the curation.

We live in a world where huge corporations are continuously producing fast-fashion and furniture with poor working and environmental conditions. It is crucial to make serious changes in the way we consume.

We as consumers have the power to stop shopping for quantity but for quality; choose objects that will last for years and years, maybe even be passed to our sons and grandsons.

For our first collection, we selected a truly inspiring assortment of objects and home goods full of meaning and soul. Each item reflects Mexico’s rich cultural heritage while still managing to meet modern lifestyle needs.

Our items are a product of a powerful alliance between young designers and local artisans; each made with sustainable materials and healthy work environments.

In celebrating Dulce Muerte, Mexico’s Day of the Dead, Ariel Rojo’s design playfully reflects upon how sugar can threaten our health each time it sweetens our life. It is a throwback to a pre-Hispanic tradition, which honours those who have passed away.

Dulce Muerteは、「死者の日」にまつわるお話そのもの。メキシコでは、毎年11月2日の「死者の日」に故人を偲ぶのが、スペイン人入植前からの伝統です。この商品は、あなたを笑顔にするかたわら、人生を甘く彩る砂糖は、健康に影を落とすこともあるということを考えさせられます。

Created by the master artisan Rubén Tamayo, Linamé is carefully woven with hand-dyed thin wool yarn. The design of this piece captures the keen use of colour and its different gradients from the traditional sarape, Mexico’s blanket-like garment often brightly colored and fringed at the ends. This piece is the first experiment of organic shapes executed by traditional Saltillo’s sarape craftsmen.

Woven by the master craftsman Hector Tamayo, Illo is crafted from two black wool yarns, each of a differing thickness, with the denser base protecting the interior design of the sarape. The bright colours shown in the centre are woven with a thinner yarn, and the shape is the result of the craftsman’s free improvisation with the treadle loom.

Sculpted in solid aluminium by industrial artisans in Monter-rey, Choose Your Bullets is a desk accessory that empowers our thoughts and makes us shoot for positive ideas. Etienne’s project responds to the current situation in Mexico, where violence seems a part of everyday life. Often misinterpreted, “Choose Your Bullets” reflects upon how we as a society react to corruption, violence, and bad decisions. Each piece is unique and engraved with a serial number.
