STEEL & NON-FERROThe Port of Antwerp is the largest steel port in the world, annually handling around 10 million tonnes of steel and non-ferrous metals, of which the majority conventionally. It is the port of choice for virtually all European steel manufacturers, handling more than 50% of all imports and exports to and from the European hinterland and accommodating a large range of products from coils and sheets to tubes, beams, pipes and wires.
Handling and innovationAs a strong believer in breakbulk cargo, the Port of Antwerp and its operators continue to invest in the growth of the port’s breakbulk facilities. One of the major recent accomplishments in this area was the investment in an all weather terminal.
To ensure maximum productivity for loading and unloading the vessels, the steel terminals are equipped with the most advanced lifting devices to handle steel cargo, including coil tongs, coil nets, spreaders, hooks and shackles. Vacuum power lifters and magnet lifters are frequently used for loading or unloading trucks and trains.
Many customers use the Port of Antwerp as a distribution hub for their steel cargo, with a total covered storage capacity of over 5.6 million m² (1359 acres), to meet the specific requirements of each commodity. Close to 50 LME-certified warehouses are available for storage of non-ferrous metals and steel billets. Furthermore, outside space for storage is amply available.
Handling and innovationThe Antwerp Port Authority and its service providers continually invest in state-of-the-art equipment for loading, unloading and handling activities. Modern shore cranes discharge pallets smoothly.
As a pioneer in Europe since 2008, Antwerp has automated warehouses for palletised perishable cargo, allowing uninterrupted, cost-efficient handling.
