He and Margaret, his wife of 64 years, were founding members of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Plattsburgh. Many Fellowship members attended the memorial service Sept. 12 in E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall. Rachelle Armstrong and Bruce Lawson participated in the formal service, which was a moving tribute to a man who was greatly loved and admired by many for his numerous contributions to our community and, most of all, for his caring and compassionate nature. Carl was professor emeritus of English at SUNY Plattsburgh, retiring after 33 years of dedicated service. Margaret and Carl helped found the Council on the Arts of Clinton County, and they were once named by the local Office of the Aging as “Treasures of the North Country.” Our Fellowship community was greatly enriched by his presence, and he will be missed by all who were privileged to know him. To date, seven memorial gifts have been made to the Fellowship in Carl's honor. If you would like to make donations in Carl's name, mail your check to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Plattsburgh, 4 Palmer St., Plattsburgh, N.Y. 12901 or drop it in the collection plate on Sunday. Please make a notation on your check that it is in memory of Carl. 4 Palmer Street ~ Plattsburgh, N.Y. 12901 518-561-6920 ~ www.uuplattsburgh.org

President’s Message Greetings to all UUFP members, friends and community supporters.

I want to remind you that our Annual Business Meeting will be held on Sunday, Oct. 20. We will try to start this meeting shortly after our Sunday service, as close to 11:30 a.m. as possible. If you know of any items that need to be on the agenda, please get in touch with me. My email is: [email protected]. My home phone is: 518-561-9418. This annual meeting is called for in our by-laws. Here is what it says: The annual business meeting shall be held on or before the third Sunday in October, following the Sunday morning services, or as otherwise designated by the Board. Questions regarding the policies and aims of the Fellowship, financing, growth, and improvement of physical facilities may be discussed at this meeting and resolved by vote if necessary. Committee chairs may be asked to report at this meeting. I ask that you please make plans to attend this meeting. We will make every effort to discuss our UUFP “business," while still keeping to our agenda and leaving room for any questions, comments or advice you might offer. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the great weather and fall foliage. It’s a joyous season that we all look forward to, and it always goes by too quickly. All best, Bruce

Can Your Talents Contribute to the Greater Purpose of Our Congregation? Find a Place for Your Gifts by Joining a Committee!

This year, we have grouped committees by their purpose and mission under "cluster" names. We have five clusters with various committees in each one. There are charts on the wall in the Fellowship sanctuary. Please sign up for the committee that interests you. See the clusters below. Two representatives from each cluster will serve on the Council of Shared Ministry. On this council, they will talk about what the committees are doing in their cluster, what goals are being worked on, and where they need help. The purpose of this council is to keep communication lines flowing and to work together to achieve our Fellowship's goals. Our Five Clusters

Fund Development • Stewardship • Capital Campaign • Coffeehouse • 2nd Saturday Cinema • Short-term Fundraisers: Rummage Sale, Wreath Sale,

Service Auction, Rentals

Administration • Planning • Buildings & Grounds • Technology • Leadership Development • Finance • HR

Religious Life • Adult Eduction • DRE & RE Program • Sunday Services • Music • Social Action

Membership • New Membership • Compassionate Care • Compassionate Cooks • Fun, Fellowship & Hospitality

Communications • Website/The Chalice • Sunday Program Announcements and E-Blasts • Paid Advertising • Social Media • Photography & Videography

Council on Shared Ministry The five clusters will be connected to each other through the Council on Shared Ministry. Two leaders from each cluster will serve on the council, which will meet quarterly. We will find strength in our united work toward the goals identified by the Board of Trustees.

---------------- We'll talk more about the clusters at a casual "gab session" and also at the Congregational Meeting on Sunday, Oct. 20.

Board of Trustees: President Bruce Lawson Vice President Jodi Faucher Treasurer Jerry Bates Secretary Kathy Sajor

Members at Large: Mary Dufort Tom Morrissey John Neuhaus Ursula Jones Carole Klein

***We hope this chart helps you understand "the cluster" concept. UU congregations all over the country are following this new model.

Communications Cluster Hard at Work One large project is to make our new website easy to use and read, pleasant to look at, and inviting to new people who visit the website to learn more about us! What is our role to strengthen lines of communication at the UUFP – internally and externally? We'd like to share our thinking about our role and these topics: Guidelines & communications workflow documents: To facilitate communication and help the UUFP maintain a higher profile in the community, we’re thinking about helpful guidelines for our congregation’s use of social media, our website, press releases, posters and print materials. We're also working on how-to’s—explaining how to access items like the calendar of events, the Chalice newsletter, group emails and committee documents. Press release tool kit: We’re developing a tool kit to include information about press release format. Some clusters or committees will have a lot of use for this. Sharing information: We are requesting that all committees send us any official publicity (i.e. press releases, posters, brochures, etc.) before it is published, so that we can make suggestions that will make our communications more consistent and effective. Logo: We are striving to better brand our congregation. We are developing a logo and a few other consistent design elements—like how our name should appear on official documents or possible tag lines. In the meantime, if you are working on any publicity or if you have ideas about communication guideline needs or concerns to share with the Communications Cluster, please send them to one of our co-chairs: Michelle at [email protected] Jo El at [email protected]
