Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means ‘wheel’ and is used to describe an energy

centre. The idea is that there are many di erent energy centres in the body that

are linked to di erent aspects of body, mind and soul. In traditional yogic teaching there

are seven main chakras aligned vertically with the spine, starting at the base and

running all the way to the top of the head:

THE ROOT CHAKRA (Muladhara)Location: Base of the spine

Salt bathsSea-salt baths are amazing. For hundreds of years, sea salt has been recognized as a sacred tool to clear away anything that is not serving us. I have a preference for using Himalayan pink salt in the bath and I’ve always felt nourished and clear after doing it. I believe it cleanses the body’s energy system and allows the energy centres to clearly express. All you have to do is put a generous amount of sea salt or pink Himalayan salt in a nice warm bath. I like to add my favourite essential oils to the water too, in order to make the experience even more luxurious.

Blessing your foodThis is a wonderful way to lift the energy of what you’re about to consume because, without doubt, it infl uences your body’s energy system. Blessing your foods allows you to let the vital life force within the meal be activated in order for your body to be nourished and supported. There are several ways you can bless your food. You can visualize your food washed in a golden light, you can imagine light coming from your hands over it or you can just say a good old prayer: ‘Thank you universal life force for blessing this food with unconditional

love. I allow it to nourish every cell of my being.’In our home, we have love heart-shaped plates and all our crockery has the word ‘Love’ stamped onto it – it’s a perfect reminder to be mindful at meal times.

Blessing your belly I realized quite early on my spiritual pathway that sometimes it would become pretty easy to forget blessing your food, and at other times very easy to forget you’re eating it. In his book, The Miracle of Mindfulness, Thich Nhat Hanh explains that mindfulness is an awareness of the present moment and what we are doing within it. I know that I often forget I’m eating something because I’ll be checking emails at the same time or even texting. When I forget to bless my food, I shift my perceptions by blessing the food in my belly. Sure, it might not be in front of me anymore, but it doesn’t mean I can’t raise the vibration of what I’ve just eaten. To do this, place your hands on your belly, close your eyes and breathe towards your hands. Imagine that pure divine light is coming from source to your heart, and extending down each arm through your fi ngers into your belly. Then say something

like: ‘Thank you universe for blessing the food in my belly! It feels so good to be nourished and well!’

Yoga and exerciseAnother great way to raise the energy of the body and clear your chakras is through exercise and yoga. I don’t know about you but once I started to exercise more regularly, in a way that pleased me, I would leave the class or gym feeling high on life. That feeling of being excited, unstoppable and energized is also what’s happening for the subtle bodies too.If you want to live a high vibrational lifestyle, it’s important for you to fi nd a regular exercise or yoga routine that suits you, your body and your level of fi tness. For me, a daily practice of ashtanga yoga and regular visits to a personal trainer really help me keep my body in shape and my energy high.

If you are feeling good, it’s a sign your chakras are alive and filled with

vital life force.

These energy centres are all moving, measuring and experiencing our journey with us. When we are going through challenges in our life, the corresponding chakra(s) can be under pressure. With a daily spiritual practice and a conscious awareness of these centres, however, we can cleanse, balance and energize them.
