These Chairs are expected to attract sustained involvement of the industry, education and training institutions outside IGNOU, research establishments in the public and private sectors and build partnerships with them in designing appropriate programmes that will further the objectives of IGNOU. CBCI-IGNOU Chair Phone : 91-11-29571691 E-mail : [email protected] The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) and the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) established the CBCI- IGNOU Chair to promote studies in the areas of Family Education, Social Work, HIV/AIDS and Philosophy. The Chair was established with the following objectives: To address the needs of disadvantaged sections of the society through educational programmes, extension activities and research; To develop and launch socially relevant courses and programmes of study such as Social Work, HIV/AIDS, Family Life Education, Substance Abuse and Philosophy; To organize seminars and conferences on important socially relevant themes; To undertake activities to address the concerns of the disadvantaged sections of the society. The Chair has done commendable work during the thirteen years of its existence. The first programme developed by the Chair in this area of study was a six months Certificate in HIV and Family Education (CAFE) launched in January, 2002. I In January 2003, a one year Diploma programme in HIV and Family Education (DAFE) was launched. The Bachelor Degree Programme in Social Work (BSW) was launched in July 2004. The Chair also developed a Master in Social Work (MSW) and Post Graduate Diploma in Social Work (PGDSW) which were launched in July 2008 and January 2009 respectively. At present, the Chair has completed the preparation of the M.S.W. (Counselling) programme. The chair also prepared the course materials for M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Social Work. The Chair launched B.A. (Philosophy) programme in the year 2009. This programme is offered through School of Interdisciplinary and Trans-disciplinary Studies. The M.A. (Philosophy) programme was launched in July 2010. The School of Social Work has been organizing the Annual Mother Teresa Memorial Lecture since 2008 under CBCI Chair. Inaugural of the Mother Teresa Memorial Lecture on “Power of Peace” on October 31, 2012. Prof. Abdul Waheed Khan, former Assistant Director General of UNESCO delivered the Lecture.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India(CBCI) and the Indira Gandhi National OpenUniversity (IGNOU) established the CBCI-IGNOU Chair to promote studies in the areasof Family Education, Social Work, HIV/AIDSand Philosophy.

The Chair was established with the followingobjectives:

With the declaration of 2005-2014 as the

decade of Education for Sustainable

Development by United Nations, Indira

Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

established a University level Chair in March

2007, cutting across disciplines and schools,

to develop and promote Education for

Sustainable Development in India. Through

this Chair, the University aims to create

awareness and know-how to a wide

spectrum of scientists, environmentalists,

administrators, social scientists, policy makers

and enlightened corporate sectors on the

urgent and imperative need to put

sustainability in the centre of all their

endeavours. The eminent agricultural scientist

Professor M.S. Swaminathan is the Honorary

Chair.

The objectives of the chair are

to undertake:

● Capacity building in Sustainability Science

and Sustainable Development;

● Field Based Action Research Projects and

Programmes in seven Major Ecosystems

with a focus on pro-nature, pro-poor,

pro-women and pro-employment under

the theme of Sustainable Development;

● Development of educational and training

materials for sustainable development

with reference to the different

ecosystems of the country, based on field

projects;

● Policy Studies for Sustainable

Development for preparing National Policy

on Sustainable Development; and

● Preparation of a database on resource

persons and institutions, training

methodologies and case studies

regarding sustainable development;

compile them and set up an e-library.

I. PROGRAMME ON OFFER(ONLINE)

A. P.G. DIPLOMA

1. Post Graduate Diploma inSustainability Science(PGDSS)

The objectives of the programme are to:

● enhance awareness and impart

knowledge on urgent measures to be

taken to limit population explosion,

promote unsustainable lifestyle, and

generation of non-polluting and

recyclable e-wastes and synthetic

chemicals;

● transform green revolution into

evergreen revolution so that agriculture

is no longer a destroyer of forests and

biodiversity; and

● put “ecology” in the centre of economic

development.

B. APPRECIATION/LEADERSHIP PROGRAMMES

2. Appreciation Programme onSustainability Science(APSS)

This programme is rooted in the principles

of Agenda 21. It endeavours to

promote Sustainable Development with

a global spirit of “Our Common Future”,

to rescue planet Earth from the brink of

collapse. The Appreciation Programme

also takes cognizance of the threat of

climate change to sustainable

development.

3. Leadership Programme onNutrition Security andSustainable Development(LPNSSD)

This programme intends to sensitize and

guide policy and programme leaders to

rely more on evidence based

programming for achieving nutrition

security and sustainable development.

4. Appreciation Programme onSustainable Management ofWetlands (APSMW)

The objectives are to:

● provide basic knowledge about theimportance of wetlands, the cause of theirdegradation, restoration efforts andsustainable management;

● enhance awareness on the role ofwetlands on social, cultural and livelihooddimensions of the dependentcommunities; and

● build capacity to meet the challenges ofglobal warming, sea level rise andsafeguarding lives and livelihoods of thecoastal communities.

5. Appreciation Programme OnSustainable Management ofGanga – A ScientificApproach (APSMG)

The major objectives of the programme areto:

● create awareness about the significanceof the national river Ganga and itsconnectivity with our civilization andculture;

● trace the source, origin and journey ofthe Ganga, its tributaries, upstream anddownstream linkages;

● characterize the Indo-Gangetic Plainscovering agriculture, industrialdevelopment, ecology and environmentaspects and issues thereof; and

● identify and analyse issues related topublic health – water and vector-bornediseases, sanitation, waste disposalsystems, economy, livelihood security, anddemographic dimensions.

6. Leadership Programme onHimalayan Ecosystems(LPHECO)

The objectives are to:

● sensitize and strengthen awareness about

the Himalayan ecosystems in the contextof Sustainable Development;

● link and evolve the linkages of livelihoodand ecological security in the mountainregion; and

● improve the awareness among thestakeholders about the impact of climatechange and management.

7. Appreciation Programme onSustainable Management ofBiodiversity (APSMBIO)

The sustainable management ofbiodiversity is one of the importantchallenges facing humanity; one thatrequires the active participation ofdedicated professionals who arecommitted to the interdisciplinary natureof the subject. In this context, the aimof this Appreciation programme is to:

● promote awareness for sustainablemanagement of biodiversity formainstreaming biodiversity;

● facil itate a critical appreciation/understanding of the scienceunderpinning biodiversity as this willprovide for the growing need forexpertise in sustainable management ofbiodiversity in a changing climate; and

● sensitize people to the issues aroundbiodiversity, threats posed to it as thiswould promote the conservation ofspecies diversity, genetic diversity, andbiological diversity of ecosystems.

II. ACTION RESEARCH PROJECTS

● “Biotechnological Interventions andEducational Initiatives for StrengtheningEcological Security and ExpandingLivelihood Options of Kuttanad WetlandEcosystem, Kerala, India”.

The objectives are to disseminate the ideasand thoughts of Dr Ambedkar. This is donethrough organising academic programmes,seminars, workshops, lectures, films etc.directed towards achieving his goal of a societybased on liberty, equality and fraternity. Itwill undertake projects of documenting thehistory of the movement, for instance, the‘Dalit Heritage Biography Project’, under whichthe biographies of activists in the anticastemovements would be documented.

Mother Teresa ChairThe ‘Mother Teresa Chair ’ has beenestablished in the School of Social Work.

The objectives of the Chair are thefollowing:

a) To promote socially relevant programmesin the area of philanthropy and Inter-religious studies;

b) To undertake extension activitiestargeting the HIV infected, leprosypatients, street children, refugees,destitute and other vulnerablepopulations;

c) To organize training and skill developmentprogrammes for socio-economicdevelopment of vulnerable sections of thesociety;

d) To organize training, workshops,seminars, conferences on relevant topics;

e) To celebrate philanthropic day every yearon August 26th, the birthday of blessedMother Teresa; and

f ) To institute awards and scholarships.

The Sir C.V. Raman Chair for ScienceEducation, established to promotemathematics and science education, is locatedin the School of Sciences. This Chair has beenmandated to initiate, plan and coordinatevarious academic activities in the projectmode. The activities would include creatingcourses/programmes, writing books, creatingmulti-media material for different levels oflearning, advice on innovative methods forscience education and use of technology indistance mode. The Chair will also map out
