Chairman’s Corner
That beautiful game ………
6% of boys in South Africa play sport after school and 0.4% can make a living out of sport
(accredited to Tim Noakes).
This past weekend Luis Suarez (Liverpool) bit Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea) in an English Premier League
game and received a 10-match ban and an Indonesian footballer was banned for life for punching a
referee.
What boggles the mind further is that Luis Suarez is hardly a first time offender.
In 2010 his deliberate handball prevented Ghana from scoring against Uruguay in the dying moments of a
World Cup quarter final, which would have seen Ghana advance to the semi-finals.
Also in 2010, while playing for Ajax in the Dutch league he was banned for 7 matches after biting Otman
Bakkal (PSV Eindhoven) and in December 2011 he was banned for 8 games after racially abusing Patrice
Evra (Manchester United) in the English Premier League.
In a FA Cup tie against minor league Mansfield Town earlier this year he was criticized for scoring a goal
after a blatant handball.
This guy is obviously a slow learner!!!
Liverpool Football Club amazingly had the nerve to release a statement in which they claimed to be
“shocked and disappointed at the severity of the ban”.
When I was involved in Cricket Umpiring at club level, I realised what a profound impact professional
sportsmen and women have on kids today thanks to the worldwide reach of television and the internet.
Luis Suarez is a hungry cheat; it’s as simple as that.
I can’t tell you how thankful I am that most people wear gum guards on the hockey field.

Athletics
TWO OCEANS 2013 ____________________________________________________________________________________________
Two Oceans was again well supported by Wanderers runners with 20 members completing the half
marathon and 32 finishing the ultra. Thankfully registration has moved to the CT International Convention
Centre – a vast improvement from the Cape of Good Hope Centre. For those who did the 56km, this race
will long be remembered as a battle against the wind. Pleasant weather for most of the first half gave way to
truly treacherous conditions coming down Chappies with a howling 40km wind to contend with. As those
who have done this race a few times will tell you, the “business-end” starts in Hout Bay. The huge crowd
support at this point is uplifting but then it’s a long hard slog from the marathon mark to that dreaded mine
shaft, aka Constantia Nek.
Strange though how one’s sense of humour returns once you
hit Rhodes Drive knowing the worst is behind you. Through
the forest, past Kirstenbosch and before you know it you’re
running onto the field at UCT. Another one in the bag. This
year represented Mark Hoffman’s 20th
Oceans.
To “The Hof” we say congratulations and to all first time
finishers – well done! See you in 2014.

Rugby In the month of April, Wanderers played one friendly and began the first round of the
Pirates Grand Challenge Competition
GREAT DAY FOR CHIEFS
"Well done to all the teams on Saturday. The U21's were unlucky not to convert pressure into points, the 1st's, 2nds and 3rds stuck to their plans and played well and secured 3 good wins. The 1st's slipping with 3 opportunities in the first half were down at half time, but what a brilliant turnaround, character & composure that was portrayed in the 2nd half which has always been a part of the team dictated to the 80th minute. Jurgen getting a well-deserved man of the match award. Well done guys." Quote from head coach Neil Kalify.
The under 21 team took to the field first. They lost their encounter 3-19 (half time 3-12). Points scorer was Dwayne Fourie. Right wing Siyabulela Tshoko was named man of the match. Then it was the turn of the 3rds to take on their counterparts. This game was won by the Chiefs 13-12 (half time 10-5). The team looked hungry and fired up for the game. Lock Thomas Ngobeni scored his try from a turnover at a breakdown in play. Fullback and captain Grant Wilcox duly converted the try and was successful with 2 penalties. No man of the match was announced. It was then the turn of the second team to take to the field. In a hard fought match ably led by captain and lock Eben Engelbrecht, they ran out winners 12-7. Try scorers were Eben Engelbrecht and left wing Macduf Ramolahlei. Fly half Nick Gerber was successful with one conversion. In a tough match the 1st team also ran out victors - the score being 33-28 (12-21 at half time). The game was won in the last few minutes. Tries were scored by fullback Richard Aingworth, 8th man Jurgen van der Vyver, left wing Chris Nel and right wing Kagiso Kwapeng 'Mayo'. Débutante fly half Craig Kollerick converted all 4 tries.
Wanderers vs Alberton – Kent Park Tuesday 23rd
April
On a cool Tuesday evening the Wanderers Chiefs hosted Alberton Rugby Club.
The under 19 and under 21 sides played at Hyde Park due to a water problem on one of the
fields at Wanderers. The u19's could not record a win and went down fighting 34-0 (half time
15-0). Fly half Jason Cunningham was made man of the match. The u21's were also beaten,
but did not go down without fighting. Scrum-half Ricardo Viera scored the solitary try which
was converted by fly half Dwayne Fourie. The final score was 33-7 (half time 7-19) in favour
of Alberton.
The 3rds took to the field first and showed their intentions early on in the game when full back
Grant Wilcox scored a solo try, running almost the full length of the field. Alberton then
answered with an intercept try which was converted. Wanderers then scored tries by fly half
Lindi Mngadi, scrum-half Sibu Gumede, wing Mark Tonetti, 8th
man and captain Jeremy
Dobrowsky, centre Valery 'Gadafi' Nguone. Grant Wilcox was successful with 4 conversions
making the half time score 38-7. In the second half centre Eksteen Traut, Grant Wilcox and
replacement wing Mtolo Mthokizisi scored tries. Grant Wilcox converted all to make the final
score 59-7. While it would be unfair to single anyone out, two stand outs for the team were lock
Kevin Johnstone and Grant Wilcox.
![Page 6: Chairman’s Corner - The Wanderers Club · 2013-05-02 · Ramolahlei. Fly half Nick Gerber was successful with one conversion. In a tough match the 1st team also ran out victors](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022041621/5e3ef29aac416040f049e1d1/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Then it was the turn of the 2nds to show their worth. Wing Macduf Ramolahlei started the
scoring for the Chiefs with a try. Tries were then scored by centre Darren Rentzke, prop Gareth
Fennell, centre Grant Bullimore with a brace. Fly half Nick Gerber was only successful with I
conversion. Alberton replied with a penalty and a try making the half-time score 27-8. In the
second half winger Nick 'Irish' du Toit scored a try which was converted by Nick Gerber.
Darren Rentzke scored his second try soon after. Fullback James Sharp could not convert. The
final score then was 39-13 to Wanderers.
The final game then kicked off. The 1sts were also determined to come off with a win. Captain
and fullback Richard Aingworth led his team on to the field. Scrum-half Wesley Flanagan
scored the first try which was converted by fly half Stuart Hill, centre Clayton Kelly was next
on the score board with his try also converted. Alberton replied with a try of their own to make
the score 14-5 at half time. There was a break in the game when half the floodlights went out
and the referee then waited for them to be re-switched on before commencing with the game.
Head coach Neil Kalify assisted the staff to do this. Alberton were first on the scoreboard in the
second half with a converted try. Eighth man Jonny Mallett then replied with a try which was
also converted. Wesley Flanagan crossed the line for his second try of the evening; Stu Hill was
unsuccessful with the conversion. Flanker Geoffrey Wood scored the final try of the match
which was duly converted by Stu Hill making the final score 33-10 in favour of the Chiefs.
Winger Kagiso Kwapeng 'Mayo' was rewarded for his efforts by receiving the man of the
match award.
Head coach Neil Kalify had this to say - "Well played to all the open teams. It was a brilliant
start to the league from Chiefs. The first team scored five excellent tries and as the game
progressed the side continued to do well. Stand outs were Kagiso Kwapeng (Mayo), Geoff
Wood, and Brendon Cross and well controlled by Captain Richard Aingworth."
On Saturday 27th
April, Wanderers travel to Raiders for the second round of the league.

Badminton Our Tuesday social nights have been well attended with some faces from years gone by as well as many
new and enthusiastic players. Sadly, again, we have said farewell to players who have represented us in
the leagues and at tournaments, Jacky back to China and Kerryn back to Pietermaritzburg. Hope we see
you both soon.
Southern Gauteng's doubles league, new format, has just come to an end and Sarah Rice and Marloes
Reinink were victorious in the ladies doubles. We had a good turnout from Wanderers and it was
generally enjoyed by all.
Our major league, also with a facelift, begins towards the end of May. Wanderers are the co-hosts of the
league which means the hall will be bursting at the seams on league nights.
Linda Hampton is representing Southerns at the SA Masters Championships in Robertson in May. Good
luck Linda.
Training for all levels of players is still offered on a Monday evening and we would like to encourage all
to make use of this excellent opportunity.

Hockey
The season is in full swing and our overall results have been reasonably good up to now.
Men’s teams update:
Our 1st team in Premier league has played three games and has won all three; the only real competition so
far has been against the Old Edwardians 1st team. This game turned out to be very closely contested with
Wanderers scoring the winning goal in the last seconds of the match; the final score was Wanderers 3 and
Old Edwardians 2. Wanderers now have 9 points to Old Edwardians 6 points; they won 2 and lost the one
to us.
Crusaders are also sitting on 6 points having won 2 out of 3 and the strong UJ 1st team are currently in 4th
place having only played 2 and won two.
Here are most of the men’s 1st team players who are coached by Robin van Ginkel who is the SGHA
men’s Provincial Coach and who also assists with the National Squads.

Our 2nd
men’s team in 1st league is currently in 3
rd place having only played two so far and won both but
do still have a game in hand.
Jeppe 2nds are lying in 2nd
spot having won both their games, whilst our 3rd
side is in top position having
won 3 out of 3 games. At the half way mark the Premier and 1st leagues will change as the top teams in 1
st
league then play against the bottom teams in the Premier league. This should work out a lot better and be
closer matches as presently the newly promoted teams in Premier league are proving that they are not
nearly good enough to play against the top Premier sides with scores of 20 – 1 and 17-0 being recorded,
the exception being the Old Edwardians team.
Wanderers 4ths in the 2nd
league are lying 4th
having won 2 out of 3 games, Old Parks 2nd
team is
presently in the top spot.
Wanderers 5ths and 6ths play in the 3rd
league. The 5ths are in 7th
position having played 3 and drawn 2
whilst the 6ths in 5th
spot have won 1 out of 3.
Our 7th
and 8th
teams are both in the 4th
league; the 7th
side is in 2nd
place whilst the 8th
team is in 4th
place.
The 7ths have won 3 out of 3 games and the 8th
won 2 out of 3 so both these sides are doing very well.
Our 9th
side in 7th
league is looking very good indeed and is lying in 1st spot having won 2 and drawn 1.
Ladies teams update:
We have a talented ladies 1st team this season who so far have played 2 and won 2 but are lying 4
th as they
still have a game in hand. Their main opposition in Premier league are Jeppe/St Andrews who have
played 3 and won 3, UJ have won 2 out of 3 and Pirates have also won 2 out of 2.
Our Ladies 2nds in the Premier league have lost both games but to the top teams so we are expecting
better results when they are scheduled to play the bottom 5 sides.
Our Ladies 3rds in 1st league are in 5
th spot and have won I out of 2 games.
The 4th
team in 2nd
league is a bit out of their depth so far as they are in 7th
place having played 3 and
drawn one. This team has a lot of new players in their ranks and will surely improve when they get to
know each other’s play a lot better.
Our 5th
team in 3rd
league is doing well and is in 2nd
spot having won 3 and drawn 1. Also in 3rd
league
our 6th
side is also battling having lost 2 out of 2 but hopefully will improve as the season progresses.
Our 7th
team in 4th
league are playing really good hockey and hopefully if they continue in this vein will
gain promotion next season as they are currently in 1st place having won 3 out of 3 games.
This was taken off the Southern Gauteng website on 25 April 2013.

Colts news:
Our numbers have grown to the extent that we cannot take any more players. Wanderers have entered 7
teams in the SGJHA Colts league in 2013. 5 teams in the Girls Colts league and 2 teams in the Boys Colts
league. 4 teams in the under 15 age-group and 3 teams in the under 17 age group. League matches are
scheduled to start on Friday 10th
May.
Mini-hockey:
We started Mini-hockey practices in early March and the numbers have grown to the point where we
cannot take another child, sadly we have to turn children and parents away as we are now at maximum
capacity. The players, coaches and parents have been very busy and involved in practices and Mini-
hockey Round robins. The Wanderers Mini Tournament is being held on Saturday 25th
May this year and
we are expecting a bumper turnout.
Social news:
Good news, our International Coach from Holland Leonoor Voskamp who has been coaching our Juniors
and Ladies Premier Indoor and Winter leagues recently gave birth to a baby girl Kiki. Both mom and
baby Kiki are doing well and no doubt will be back on the field shortly!

Squash
Club News: As reported last month, Leagues are progressing well, interspersed with various
tournaments. A number of Wanderers took part in the recent SA National Doubles
Tournament at Jo’burg Country Club, although none of us was able to go home with any of
Nicki Oppenheimer’s Sponsorship Money! However, a well-run event enhanced by the use
of JCC’s 4 Doubles Courts.
Our Club’s caterers are providing supper on Thursdays (Masters’ League) which is on a trial
basis…please make use of this facility as it will fall-away if it doesn’t make economic sense.
I have told the Athletic & Hockey Sections that there’s food available to increase the up-
take.
Security:
A thwarted theft attempt occurred on Masters’ night recently where someone sat in the
gallery watching a game and put his hand into someone’s kit-bag. Fortunately, he was
noticed, but no-one knew who he was and everybody assumed he was a friend of someone
there. Please be vigilant, especially on busy nights as there is no way to control access to
the viewing areas.
Maintenance:
Court 7 is back in action and looking fantastic. The new floor has the right amount of
spring and is perfectly “true”……no funny bounces! The walls are similarly flat and true…..
a real pleasure to play on.
The new change-room extraction system is now fully operational which should eliminate
those steamy winter mêlées which were a feature of league nights at the Wanderers.
Furthermore, not to be left out, the Ladies change-rooms have new shower doors, which
are a great improvement.
Until next month………keeeep squashing.
Yours in Squash,
Dave Grant

Hi All
This month has been extremely busy, what with our own closed singles championship taking place, the
Gauteng Open, for which we were the hosting club. Those have been highlights but there are always
some detractions and I’d like to thank the following people for their assistance with the event – Peter
Smith, Margaret Stoneham, Norma Katz, Jasper Hulley, Lynne Levine, Archie Hotz, Eddy Magid, Adrian
Schofield, Nello Vercelotti and Anne van Dijk.
May I remind all that as a club member you are expected to play your part and give something back – both
to bowls and your club. Also, may I remind members that any suggestions or issues are to be brought up
with the committee in writing as we have had some “incidents” on and off the greens which are not in the
spirit of the game. Our aim is to have the best club – both socially and competitively.
The club has been praised on the standard of the greens and this is directly the efforts of Kevin and his
team. Well done, Kevin. You can go to (click here) www.jbabowls.co.za to see photographs.
Here is Amos marking up the green for the Gauteng
Open.

Stan Friedman made the quarter finals and Bobby Donnelly – after a terrific clash with Gerry Baker
unfortunately lost out in the finals (below) to Neil Fraser.
Soon the JBA pairs will be played and then the Nationals. Good luck to all who are participating.
TABS is looking up and you are encouraged to come bowl. Some excellent bowling is happening and
league participants are expected to participate in TABS as this is the backbone of the club.
