Chairing the Department

(Q1) This article is persuasive to a great extent in our opinion. It is about the struggles and accomplishments of an ordinary woman who not only stood up for herself but also for the rights and equality of the entire women community in the male chauvinistic society. There are many incidents in the article that inspired and lead us to respect the author- 1.Although the author had a great potential of being an English faculty, she was initially rejected by University of Texas just because she was a “HOUSEWIFE”. Instead of being daunted by the rejection, she had the courage to take it as a challenge. 2. In the male dominated world where women were looked down upon, she completed her degree earlier than few of her male peers along with undertaking the role of a mother and a wife. This reflects her determination and diligence. 3.By balancing home, family and professional life, she assimilated sound managerial qualities even before acquiring the role of a chairperson. This clearly indicates that mothers can be great managers because the very role of a mother requires multitasking and managerial skills. 4.Working in women’s movement and in women’s organization shows her zeal to stand up for the women community and fight for their rights.

(Q1) This article is persuasive to a great extent in our opinion. It is about the struggles and accomplishments of an ordinary woman who not only stood up for herself but also for the rights and equality of the entire women community in the male chauvinistic society. There are many incidents in the article that inspired and lead us to respect the author-

1. Although the author had a great potential of being an English faculty, she was initially rejected by University of Texas just because she was a “HOUSEWIFE”. Instead of being daunted by the rejection, she had the courage to take it as a challenge.

2. In the male dominated world where women were looked down upon, she completed her degree earlier than few of her male peers along with undertaking the role of a mother and a wife. This reflects her determination and diligence.

3. By balancing home, family and professional life, she assimilated sound managerial qualities even before acquiring the role of a chairperson. This clearly indicates that mothers can be great managers because the very role of a mother requires multitasking and managerial skills.

4. Working in women’s movement and in women’s organization shows her zeal to stand up for the women community and fight for their rights.

5. After working for a few years in the University as a chairperson, she was able to bring competent female workers to their deserving positions in the organization.

Because of her excellent performance as a chairperson, she was asked by the male majority department to serve again. This clearly shows that a person is defined by acuteness and competencies for a job role and not because of gender.

(Q2) The Author raised questions on many important and addressable aspects and challenges faced by a woman both at home and at work .The main strengths of the argument are:

Strengths:

A Mother can be a great administrator at taking decisions as she has the experience of juggling between different works at the same time.

Women can be very efficient and focused on the goals they perceive and that it is just a misconception on the part of the society that men are better than women ( eg: The Author has finished her P.H.D degree faster than her male peers who started pursuing their P.H.D around the same time )

A Good Administrator of the Chair should care about their faculty and pay attention to their needs and interests.

A Good Administrator should guide his/her faculty and at the same time give them formidable work so that the corresponding faculty feels responsibility and also gains success in his/her endeavors.

Changed the Perception about the common psychology that a Woman’s work is less worth than a Man’s work.

Cutting down the costs to a minimal level wherever possible and “schnorring” people to do charity works.

Allocation of work in the family and creating a sense of “Equality” among all the family members.

Examples of the Achievements by different women in their respective Endeavour’s which would create a sense of spark among the women that they too can achieve their Ambitions with perseverance.

When in a group, everybody should contribute towards the success of the Group, it should not be like one person is taking down everything on his/her shoulders and remaining are doing nothing.

Weakness:

The Article subtly lights the Author as a bit female Chauvinist, Maybe this is because of the fact that she herself has been subjected to a myriad of challenges through out her life in this male dominated society.
