CHAIR’S CORNER Greetings! One of the joys of being residency director is working with incredibly energetic and enthusiastic dermatology residents. A favorite former resident would frequently start the day with an enthusiastic “greetings!” to the clinic staff, resident colleagues and faculty. This seems a most appropriate way to kick off a newsletter to all of our alumni. We hope to connect with all of you and let you know the exciting things happening here at Wright State Dermatology. We’ll update you on the residency training program, the faculty practice, the events we hold regularly, the research we’re conducting and the accomplishments of our alumni. We hope you’ll find this interesting and informative. It’s remarkable to see how you — our graduates — have literally spread out across the country to bring outstanding dermatology care to your area. Our alums have assumed leadership roles in academia, state and national organizations and business enterprises. You have contributed in amazing ways to advancing our ever-evolving, dynamic field. Through this and subsequent editions, we’ll highlight the amazing contributions of our alums. We hope this newsletter will be a vehicle to spur many of you to reconnect with your residency classmates and network with alums you didn’t know previously. Beginnings and Endings — WSU Resident Life Update

As the 2016–17 academic year comes to an end, there are big changes in the lives of the dermatology residents at Wright State University. On January 31, 2017, a new jewel was added to the WSU family. Natalie Meeks, a first-year resident, and her husband, Brett, welcomed their first child, Kennedy Camilla Meeks, into the world. Kennedy was born a healthy 6 pounds and 14 ounces and 21 inches in length. Mom and baby are doing well. Kennedy is enjoying life as a newborn with hobbies including feeding, napping, and keeping her parents on their toes.

While most of the residents are taking a sigh of relief after completing the in-service exam, Danielle and Nathan continue to prepare for the boards in July which will officially bring their residency careers to an end. We will definitely miss these two but are lucky that they are staying close to the Dayton area. Danielle will be joining Christ Hospital as she opens her own practice at Liberty Township and Nathan will be joining Dr. Elizabeth Muennich at Dermatology and Skin Care Associates in Mason, Ohio. We hope that you can all join as we celebrate their accomplishments at graduation on Friday, June 16, 2017.

After being in various locations around the Dayton area in past years, the Dermatology Department has returned to a location on the Wright State Campus. The Department administrative offices, resident office, conference room and Wright State Physi-cians Dermatology Clinic are located on the second and third floors of the Wright State Physicians Health Center. The building, which opened in June 2014, provides modern facilities for the Department’s academic, administrative, clinical and research activities. Many of you will recall our past locations in the WSU Fred A. White

Center (now Wright Hall, home of the medical school), the VA Medical Center, and Elizabeth Place. Our current, modern location provides an easily accessible location for academic activities, including Grand Rounds and guest speakers, and Department meetings. For any who had not seen our new facilities, we invite you to visit when you are in the area. We would love to give you a tour of the Department. Please call Heidi Sowl, Residency Coordinator, at 937.245.7254 if you would like a tour or, better yet, plan to participate in one of our activities held in the Department facilities.

Dermatology Department returns to its roots on WSU campus

Our dermatology department is now offering numerous research opportunities. The Pharmacology Translational Unit has many ongoing research studies funded by NIH and VA grants evaluating the effects of UVB exposure as well as multiple clinical trials. The unit has several current and upcoming opportunities for participation in clinical trials for adults and children. The areas of study include Psoriasis, Atopic Dermatitis (eczema), and Alopecia Areata. Participation in clinical trials includes compensation for subject time and travel. For more information, you can reach the Pharmacology Translational Unit at 937.245.7500.

GIVING BACK

The Department of Dermatology seeks to provide a superior academic environment to ensure outstanding educational and patient care opportunities for our residents and students. Resources for maintaining this environment are limited. Your support can assist in multiple areas, such as purchase of educational or training materials; bringing visiting professors to speak to our residents, faculty and the community; providing support for residents and faculty members to attain additional training/expertise to bring back to the learning environment; or other projects of personal interest which may support the educational program.

Contributions to the Department of Dermatology may be mailed to Angela Clements, C.P.A.
