Qualifications

CandidateswillhaveanMD,MD/PhD,orequivalent,andboardcertificationinherorhisspecialtyifrelevant.

UUHShasundergoneadecadeofextraordinarygrowthandaccomplishment.Nearlytwomillionnetsquarefeetofnewclinical,educational,andresearchspacehasbeenbuiltsince2003,fundedlargelybyphilanthropicandself-generatedrevenues. Researchrevenueshaverisen87percentinthelasttenyears.Forsevenyearsrunning,UniversityofUtahHealthCare(UUHC)hasrankedamongthenation’stop10academicmedicalcentersinquality,safetyandaccountabilitybytheUniversityHealthSystemConsortium’sannualqualityandaccountabilitystudy.In2016,theUUHChasrisentothetopinstitution.

UUHSoperatesundertheleadershipoftheSeniorVicePresident,Dr.VivianLee,whoalsoservesastheDeanfortheSchoolofMedicineandtheCEOofUniversityofUtahHealthCare.TheChairoftheDepartmentofObstetricsandGynecologywillreportdirectlytoDr.Lee.

TheUniversityofUtahHospitalsandClinics(includingtheUniversityHospital,HuntsmanCancerHospital,theUniversityofUtahNeuropsychiatricInstitute,theUniversityofUtahOrthopaedicCenter,theMoranEyeCenter,theUniversityClinicalNeuroscienceCenter,theUtahDiabetesCenter,andtheCommunityClinics)isanintegralcomponentoftheHealthSciences. ItalsoservesastheclinicalarmfortheSchoolsofMedicineandDentistry,andtheCollegesofPharmacy,Nursing,andHealth.

TheUniversityofUtahHospitalsandClinicsbudgetexceeded$1.245billioninfiscalyear2015,andisalmostentirelyself-supporting.ClinicalrevenuesfortheUniversityMedicalGroup(UUMG)practicetotalapproximately$450millionperyear.Weprovidecareforover27,000patientsannuallythroughtheemergencydepartment,on-campusandcommunity-basedclinics,andover600staffedinpatientbeds.

UniversityHospitalsandClinicsistheonlyuniversityreferralcenterfortheRockyMountainWest. ItisoneofthelargestprovidersofambulatorycareservicesinUtah.

HistoryoftheDepartment

BeginningwiththetenureofJamesR.ScottMDastheChair(1977-1995),theDepartmentofObstetricsandGynecologyattheUniversityofUtahHealthSciencesCenterhasevolvedtobecomealeadingacademicforceinthediscipline.TheDepartmenthashadasustainedacademicfocusandnowhasnationallyrecognizedacademicprogramsinperinatalmedicine,reproductivegenetics,reproductiveimmunology,urogynecology,reproductiveendocrinologyandfamilyplanning.

TheDepartmentiscommittedtothedevelopmentofyounginvestigators.Itmaintainsarobustresearchenvironmentthatusesitsongoingresearchprogramsforthedevelopmentofsuccessfulacademiccareersforresidents,fellows,andjuniorfaculty.Asanexample,100%oftheMFMfellowscompletingtheDepartment’sfellowshipfromitsinitiationin1983through2015havegoneontofull-timeacademicpositions.TheDepartmentnowhousestwoinstitutionalK12traininggrants(WRHRandBIRCWH).

Departmentfacultymembershavealsoachievednationalandinternationalprominence.JamesR.ScottMDservedastheEditor-in-ChiefofObstetricsandGynecologyfrom2001-2013andIngridNygaardMDnowservesastheCo-Editor-in-ChiefoftheAmericanJournalofObstetricsandGynecology(2014-present).ThreeDepartmentfacultyhaveservedasPresidentsoftheAmericanGynecologicalandObstetricalSocietyinthepasttwodecadesandnumerousfacultyhaveservedasboardmembersandofficersofvarioussub-specialtysocietiesduringthissameinterval.

ClinicalPrioritiesTheUUHSCcompletedan$8millionrenovationofitsLaborandDeliveryUnit,AntepartumandPostpartumareas,NormalNurseryandIntensiveCareNursery,in2007.Atotalof56antepartum-postpartumbedsarenowavailableanda$28millionadditionin2010has,amongotherimprovements,increasedthisnumberto74.ThecompletelyremodeledNeonatalIntensiveCareNursery(NICU)nowboasts48bedsandanadditionaleightintermediatenurserybedshavebeenaddedtotheNormalNursery.

ThePelvicFloorCenterattheUniversityofUtahisamultidisciplinaryclinicincorporatingurogynecologicspecialists,reconstructiveandfemaleurology,colorectalsurgery,gastroenterology,pelvicpainspecialists,andphysicaltherapiststreatingtheseconditions.ThePelvicFloorCenterhaspatientrooms,threeprocedurerooms,anoutpatientOR,alargewaitingroomandseveralsmallerconsultationrooms.Testingperformedinthiscenterincludessubtraction-andvideo-urodynamics,analmanometry,electrophysiologicaltesting,andendoanalultrasonography.

TheUUHSCcurrentlyhas26operatingrooms,with2-3dedicatedtogynecologicsurgery(currentlyvariesbydayoftheweek).Inaddition,oncologycasesaregenerallydoneattheHuntsmanCancerHospital,wherethegynecologiconcologistshaveover90%recruitmentratestoclinicaltrial/tissue-bankingprotocols.

OutpatientFacilities

TheDepartmentseesgynecologicoutpatientsinfiveclinicareasatUUHSC,includingtwothatarelocatedwithinaone-miledriveofUUHSC(MadsenHealthCenter,UtahCenterforReproductiveMedicine).Inaddition,facultyandtraineesseepatientsatsevenotherUniversity-ownedcommunityclinicsandhealthcentersalongthenorthernUtahurbancorridor.

ThemajorityofwomendeliveredattheUUHSCreceivetheirantepartumcareineitheron-siteObstetricsandGynecologyclinicsoratoneofthenumeroussatelliteclinicsstaffedbytheDepartmentofObstetricsandGynecology.Theon-sitewomen’shealthambulatorycarefacilitiesrecorded29,500patientvisitsincalendar2003(ofwhich11,179,or38%,wereantepartumvisits).

Departmentalresearcherscontinuetoenjoysupportfortheirresearchprojectsfromtheoutpatientclinicstaff,whichviewsparticipationinresearcheffortsasanimportantresponsibilityofacademicambulatorycare.

ResearchPrioritiesTheDepartmenthasanextensivehistoryofproductiveNICHD-fundedresearchwith4currentlyfundedNICHD

multicenterclinicaltrialsnetworks,10NICHDtotalprimeawards,and$6.2millionintotalresearchfunding,includingsub-contractsandcapitationincomeforfiscal2016.Correspondingwiththisarelong-termpositiverelationshipsbetweenUniversityofUtahinvestigatorsandNICHDandNHLBIprogramscientistsandadministrators.TheDepartmenthasbecomealeadingacademicforceoverthepast25years.TheDepartmenthashadasustainedacademicfocusandnowhasnationallyrecognizedacademicprogramsinurogynecology,perinatalmedicine,reproductivegenetics,reproductiveimmunology,reproductiveendocrinologyandfamilyplanning.

Atthejuniorfacultylevel,theDepartmentisalsohometotwoinstitutionalK12trainingawards,aWRHRRobertSilverPI,2Scholars)andBIRCWH(MichaelVarnerMDPI,2scholarswithadditionofathirdinJanuary2017).AlloftheDepartment’sgraduatetrainingprogramsareintegratedwithIntermountainHealthcarewitharesultingsynergisticcombinationofanacademichealthcenterandalargecommunity-based,verticallyintegratedhealthcaresystem.TheDepartmenthasa25+yearcontinuouscollaborativerelationshipacrossthetwoinstitutionsand,alongwiththeDepartmentofPediatrics,isfirmlyintegratedinboththeUniversityofUtahandIntermountainHealthcaresystems.

TheUniversityofUtahDepartmentofObstetricsandGynecologyhas,overtheprecedingtwodecades,developedanexperiencedresearchinfrastructure,theObstetricsandGynecologyResearchNetwork(OGRN).TheOGRNconsistsof1)acentraladministrativecorethatprovidesprotocoldevelopmentaswellasIRB,compliance,humanresource,andfinancialoversightforallactiveresearchprotocols,and,2)clinicresearchpersonnelinthefourtertiaryhospitals(UniversityofUtahandthreeIntermountainfacilities)inthenorthernUtahurbancorridor.Importantly,UniversityofUtahresearchfundingcurrentlyemploysover40clinicalresearchpersonnelinthefourclinicalsiteswhoarerecruitingandmaintainingparticipationinanumberofNIH-fundedclinicalresearchprotocols.Hourlyparticipationinspecificprotocols,aswellasallassociatedexpenses,areprospectivelytrackedandreviewedbyOGRNadministrativestafftoensurefiscalresponsibilityandoptimallyefficientpersonnelutilization.Dr.MichaelVarneristheOGRNDirector.BecauseIntermountainHealthcareisoutsidetheUniversityofUtah'coveredentity'asubcontractisinplacethatprovidesfundingandoversightofthoseOGRNstaffbasedatIntermountainfacilities.Thismechanismhasbeeninplacesince1996andwillcontinueintotheforeseeablefuture.OGRNresearchpersonnelcurrentlyscreenobstetricin-patientserviceseverydayforpotentialparticipantsinourvariousNIH-fundedclinicalprotocols.InthoseclinicsoutsideoftheUUHSCandIntermountain'coveredentities',OGRNresearchpersonnelworkcloselywithclinicpersonnel(physicians,nurses,medicalassistants,&officestaffasappropriate)inthesesitestoensurethattheclinicpersonnelareawareofinclusion/exclusioncriteriaforvariousongoingprotocols.TheclinicpersonnelthenreferinterestedandqualifiedparticipantstoOGRNpersonnelforofficialscreeningandrecruitment.Asanexampleofthisefficiency,theUtahsiteintheNICHDMFMUNetworkhasbeentheleadingrecruitmentsiteforeachofthepastfive-yearNetworkcycles.ManyOGRNresearchstaffmembershavealong-standingandcontinuousrelationshipwiththeseclinicpersonneldevelopedovermanyyears,allowingthisprocesstofunctioninanefficientyetHIPAA-compliantmanner.ThepositiveexperiencesthatpatientsenrolledinpriorstudieshaveenjoyedhavegreatlyfacilitatedandcontinuetofacilitatethestrongsupportofourlocalObstetricproviders.Inturn,theyencouragetheirpatientstoparticipateinstudies,allowingustoeffectivelyrecruitforstudies.

EducationalPrioritiesMedicalstudentandresidenteducationarethefocusofeducationalactivitieswithintheDepartmentofObstetricsandGynecology.Facultymembersarerecruitedfortheirdedicationtomedicaleducationandteachingisgiventhehighestdepartmentalpriority.TheObstetricsandGynecologyresidencyisoneofthemostcompetitiveinthecountryanddrawsapplicantsfromallregions.Residentsenjoyexcellentclinicaltrainingandsurgicalvolumeacrossthebreadthanddepthofthespecialtywhilelearninginanacademicenvironment.ResidentsreceivedextensiveclinicalexperienceinallfacetsofObstetricsandGynecologyincludinghigh-riskobstetrics,

reproductiveendocrinologyandinfertility,gynecologiconcology,generalgynecology,adolescentmedicine,pelviscopy,reproductivegenetics,infectiousdiseases,urinarystressincontinence,pelvicpain,breastdiseases,menopause,geriatricsandprimarycare.Thenumberofsurgicalcases,high-riskobstetricalpatientsandtransports,andbreadthofexperience,areamongthehighestinthecountry.Since1970,wehavegraduated190residents.TheDepartmentofObstetricsandGynecologyfeaturesanextensiveoutreachsystem,exposingresidentstoobstetricalandgynecologicalpracticesinbothacademicandcommunitysettings.Thefocusofourprogramistoensurethatallofourgraduatingresidentsareexcellentclinicalobstetricians/gynecologists,withanemphasisonevidence-basedmedicineandacademictraining.Residentspreparenumerousconferencesandlectures,participateinqualityresearch,andareexposedtonationallyandinternationallyrecognizedreproductivescientists.Overthepastfiveyears,approximately50%ofourgraduateshaveundertakensubspecialtyfellowshiptraininginallofthemajorsub-disciplinesofObstetricsandGynecology.Therearethreeboardcertifiedspecialtyfellowships.The3-yearfellowshipinmaternalfetalmedicinehasbeentrainingfellowsforover30years.Itisoneofthefewprogramsthatoffersitstraineesarichmixofbothhands-onclinicalexperienceandqualityinvestigativeexposure.Thevastmajorityofourgraduatingfellowsremaininacademicmedicineandmanyenjoycontinuedextramuralresearchfunding.Wealsohaveexcellentandcompetitivefellowshipsinreproductiveendocrinologyandfamilyplanning.SaltLakeCity

TheUniversityofUtahislocatedinasettingthatprovidesaunique,outdoorlifestyle.TheWasatchfrontoffersanunparalleledcombinationofrecreationalandculturalopportunities.Utahboastsfivenationalparksandmorethan22millionacresoffederalland.Outdoorenthusiastscanskiat15oftheworld’sfinestskiresortsorhikeamongspectacularredrockcanyons.Cross-countryskiing,camping,backpacking,mountainclimbing,riverrunning,golf,fishing,andmountainbikingareallavailablewithinashortdrivefromtheUniversity,andtherearemorethan300daysofsunshineinwhichtoenjoytheseactivities.Inadditiontorecreationalopportunities,SaltLakeCityprovesnumerousculturalopportunitiesincludingmoderndance,aworldclasssymphonyandballet,off-Broadwaytheater,andprofessionalbasketball,baseballandhockey.SaltLakeCityisrenownedforitseasypacedlifestyle,lowcrimerateandaffordability.

SaltLakeCityisaprogressive,rapidlygrowing,high-techandindustrialcenterwithagreatermetropolitanareapopulationofapproximately1.1million.ThecityisatthecenteroftheWasatchfronturbanarea(populationofabout2.4million)thatstretchesfromProvotoLogan.Ithasahighdesertclimate,lowhumidity,andfourdistinctseasons.TheSaltLakeInternationalAirport,thehubofDeltaAirline,iscurrentlyunderrenovationtodoubleitssizeinthenextfewyears.DirectflightstoalargenumberofUScitiesaswellasParis,London,Amsterdammakethecityhighlyconvenientforprofessionalandpersonaltrips.Majorbusinessentities,suchasGoldmanSachsandAdobe,arerelocatingtheirmajorofficesandfacilitiestoSaltLakeCity.Thesechangesarealsocreatingmorediversityinthecity.Manycoffeeshops,breweries,andbarscanbefoundwithinthecity.

Theareaisprizedforitsaccesstooutstandingalpineforests,hikingandmountainbiking,nationalparks,andothernaturalresources.
