The colonists had a greater knowledge of the territory they defended.

The biggest advantage was communications and strong leadership. They didn't have to wait weeks for orders to come across the Atlantic.

Also another big advantage was the French,they were crucial to America,they also did most of the work. Americas other allies were the Spanish and the Dutch.
