Weathering
The process in which rocks or other materials are broken down.
![Page 3: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Different types of weathering:
Physical weathering Chemical weathering
![Page 4: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Physical Weathering:
Physical weathering is caused by:
1) Temperature changes (Causes rocks to crack)
![Page 5: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
2) Plant roots growing in rocks breaking the rocks.
![Page 6: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
3) Water freezing in cracks between rocks cause the rocks to break apart.
![Page 7: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
4) Rubbing
![Page 8: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
5) Animals making burrows.
![Page 9: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Chemical Weathering:
Occurs when chemicals break down the rocks.
1) Water dissolves rocks.
The agents of chemical weathering:
![Page 10: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
2) Acid Rain
Formed when gases from factories combine with rain water.
![Page 11: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Erosion
The process by which water, ice, wind or gravity moves fragments of rock and soil.
![Page 12: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
If a particle is loosened by weathering, but stays put, its just weathering.
If it starts moving, its Erosion.
![Page 13: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)

![Page 21: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Let’s Discuss The Questions.
1. As the sand is moving there is definitely erosion; there is also abrasion from the sand gains colliding. Both
![Page 22: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
2. This is frost wedging so it’s mechanical weathering. There is no mention of movement. Weathering
![Page 23: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
3. There is probably some weathering, but there is definitely erosion. Erosion or Both
![Page 24: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
4. Acid rain on a statue is chemical weathering. This is mainly Weathering.
![Page 25: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
5. Since the man is transporting Earth materials, it’s Erosion.
![Page 26: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
6. A glacier moving down a mountain would have both weathering and erosion. Both
![Page 27: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
7. A tree’s roots growing into cracks of rocks would be weathering. Weathering
![Page 28: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
8. A major volcanic eruption would involve both weathering and erosion. Both
![Page 29: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
9. Unless the garbage has “Earth Material” or dirt in it there is probably no erosion or weathering. Neither
![Page 30: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
10. The rusting of a shovel is oxidation. This is chemical weathering. Weathering
![Page 31: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
The process by which materials are dropped off at another place is called:
Deposition
![Page 32: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
![Page 33: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Erosion and deposition work
together to change the shape of the earth’s surface.
![Page 34: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Ways that erosion and deposition work together:
1) Running water
Slow moving water Deposition
Fast moving water Erosion
![Page 35: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
2) Waves
HeadlandLand surrounded by water from 3 sides.
![Page 36: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
When waves reach a headland they curve around it and wash away at
the sides of the headland.
![Page 37: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
3) Wind
Wind erodes sand and rock, when the wind slows down the sand
and rock get deposited.
![Page 38: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
How can people protect shorelines?
Shorelines may be damaged when more sand is eroded than deposited.
![Page 39: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
People can protect shorelines by:1) Building dams (to change the speed and
direction of water)
![Page 40: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
2) Building levees (prevent floods)
![Page 41: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
3) Building barricades (prevent beach erosion)
![Page 42: Ch.5.less.5.how do weathering and erosion shape the land](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052310/55506b18b4c905cc0f8b480b/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
4) Building fences (prevent sand erosion by wind)
