    Chapter 8 Questions

    1. The Battle of Saratoga was such a key to American success for a few reasons. It

greatly boosted colonial morale, and perhaps most importantly, it convincedFrance that America might actually have a chance to wind and to openly aid

    American.

    2. There were many causes of the Declaration of Independence: taxation withoutrepresentation, the kings ignorance to the colonies, etc. Basically all of the points

in the list of grievances were causes for the writing of the Declaration of

Independence. The consequences were the freedom to the colonies, and the firstnation that was based on secular human rights.

    3. The course of the Revolutionary War was fairly different depending on theregion. In New England, 1775, Americans attempted to take Bunker Hill, but

resulted in the British winning. However, the American troops fought well andproved to themselves that they could go toe-to-toe with British troops.

In the middle Atlantic states, Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold led a group of men

in a surprise victory over the redcoats at Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point,

resulting in the colonists capturing much-needed cannons and gunpowder. Later, the British ended up evacuating Boston and turned to New York as their base of

operations, where a huge fleet arrived, outnumbering George Washingtons men

and resulting in American losses. However, at Trenton in 1776, Americans wontheir first victory. One week later at Princeton, a second victory was won. During

the winter, London devised another plan to defeat the colonists. Colonel Leger,

General Burgoyne, and General Howe were all to meet at Albany, New York withtheir troops, however the plan ended up falling apart. Howe went to defeat some

of Washingtons troops, but they quickly retaliated at the Battle of Saratoga,

resulting in a major victory for the Americans. Also in the middle Atlantic states,

the Battle of Monmouth occurred, moving General Washingtons men to NewYork.

In the South, many victories occurred for the Americans. In 1776, North Carolinadefeated 1,500 loyalists at Moores Creek Bridge, and also defeated an attacking

English fleet at Charleston Harbor. Later on in the war, the Americans fought

guerilla style, thrashing British supply lines, in Georgia and South Carolina. The

British won at Camden, but then the Americans defeated them at KingsMountain and at Cowpens.

    4. Besides simply breaking away from Britain entirely, Americans also adopted arepublican form of government in 1776. They based their government on the

much-liked philosophical beliefs of John Locke, believing that all people are

created equal by God. They also were quite tired of King George III and all that

he had done, and in no way did they want to create a similar system. Theybelieved that no single person should hold complete power.

    5. The loyalists were people that supported the British, and usually came fromwealthy conservative families. During the Revolution, an estimated 50,000

Loyalists served the British in the war as soldiers, and spied and incited the

Indians. After the Declaration, they were imprisoned, hanged, and consideredtraitors, and most of them left, leaving all that they owned behind, resulting in

their lands being quickly confiscated by the Americans and sold to raise money

    for the war.

    6. By winning the Battle of Saratoga, Americans were able to show France that they

had a chance at winning the war, and convince them to send arms, money,

equipment, and uniforms to support the American efforts. This caused Britain tohave to divert troops and ships in order to protect its other assets around the

    world.
